#1 MENTAWAI MISHAP, SURFER FALLS OVERBOARD GOES MISSING
The SA surfer who fell overboard in Indo has been found alive after floating on his back for 27 hours in the ocean off the Mentawai Islands of Indonesia.

And Capetonian Brett Archibald, 50, wants to finish his surf trip.

Who can blame him after flying halfway across the world, dropping all that cash, getting horribly seasick on the way from Padang to the surf; and then enduring the trauma of thinking you’re going to drown for more than a day (in an already weak state from being sick) while the sun burns your skin, the salt water and the tropical heat dehydrates you; and to top it off you get stung by jellyfish, nibbled by fish and sea birds try to peck your eyeballs out?

Eish.

Another Indonesian surf charter boat, Barrenjoey, found Archibald, who lives in Camps Bay, at about 1am this morning ZA time floating in the ocean about 10 nautical miles from the point where he fell overboard.

“Brett Archibald has boarded the Barenjoey 20 mins ago,” wrote All Aboard Travel on their Facebook page soon afterwards. “He is alive. A bit sunburnt and dehydrated. He was floating alone. The boat is taking him to the Indies Trader III so that he can phone his wife.”

Chantal Malherbe of All Aboard Travel sent the good news to Brett’s wife Anita early this morning saying that the owners of the Barrenjoey John and Belinda McGroder, crewman Doris and their two kids Finn, 5, and Duke, 8, had found him.

Brett managed to speak to his wife by phone at about 4am this morning. On his 7th surf trip to Indo with the same group of friends, their boat the Naga Laut was rocked by bad weather, heavy seas and strong winds during the night. Suffering from a severe bout of seasickness, he went on deck before dawn. He thinks he passed out. He found himself in the ocean when he came to. All he could see was the boat vanishing. It was still dark. No-one saw him go.

He said he almost drowned at least eight times during his ordeal. He was stung by jelly fish, and nibbled by fish. He had to fend off seagulls who kept dive bombing him to pluck his eyes out as he floated on his back trying to conserve energy. He got quite bad sunburn, and was severely dehydrated. Apart from that, he felt kiff, and he needed to finish his trip. Tough old bugger.

You have to think that it was a miracle. Not many people are found again after falling overboard, particularly those that are gone for an hour or more before anyone notices they are missing. The sea saps energy quickly if you fight it by trying to swim. He survived by keeping calm and floating, and also because the water was warm: about 28 degrees C.

#2 Surfing Australia drops alcohol sponsorship

Surfing Australia has abandoned alcohol brand sponsorship to promote an anti binge-drinking message as part of a government sponsored campaign.

By signing onto the Be the Influence – Tackling Binge Drinking initiative, Surfing Australia will address youth binge drinking and the influence of alcohol promotion on young Australians by promoting an anti-binge drinking message.

Be the Influence will have naming rights to two new national events and state events run by Surfing Australia such as the upcoming Be the Influence Queensland Master’s and Women’s Surfing Series commencing May 18.

A spokesman for Surfing Australia said the move is “quite significant for the organisation,” a as alcohol brands have sponsored their events in the past.

Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark said: “This is a monumental partnership for our sport and will provide a serious boost to our various programs Australia-wide.

“Importantly the powerful anti-binge drinking message that we will promote to our surfing community is something we all believe in.

“The partnership has touchpoints across our entire organisation from grassroots to elite. We are extremely appreciative of the support and look forward to a fantastic partnership.”

Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) world tour competitors Owen Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons have become Be the Influence Surfing Ambassadors.

However large surfing events managed by the ASP and organisations other than Surfing Australia will not signed onto the Be the Influence brand.

#3 Epic Final Day At The 2013 ISA World Masters Champions In Montañita, Ecuador

During an epic day of amazing waves and tremendous surfing performances, the 2013 ISA World Masters Surfing Championship officially closed.

The waves were incredible throughout the Finals. The morning heats saw glassy surf in the 6-8 feet range at the perfect right hand point-break in Montañita, Ecuador. A gentle onshore breeze picked up mid-morning, but the waves remained consistent and pumping all day. Team Hawaii successfully defended their title of World Team Champions and winners of the Eduardo Arena Perpetual Team Trophy, named after the Peruvian founder and first President of the ISA in 1964.

#1 STORY BILLABONG BIDDERS CUT THE PRICE TO .50 A SHARE.

Private equity bidders for Billabong International Ltd. (BBG) are seeking to buy Australia’s largest surf- wear company for as little as 50 Australian cents a share, two people with knowledge of the matter said.

Billabong is seeking a higher offer and talks are continuing with the groups led by Altamont Capital Partners and Sycamore Partners Management, said the people, asking not to be identified as the talks are private. No offer at that price has been made, a third person said, also asking not to be named. Billabong today suspended its shares from trade to continue talks, giving no timetable for how long that would take. A deal at 50 cents a share would come in less than half the groups’ initial A$1.10 offers and value the owner of the DaKine and RVCA brands at A$239 million ($250 million), about 77 percent below the level that founder Gordon Merchant said last year he’d reject if TPG Capital were to offer it.

#2 2013 Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile waiting period (April 15 – June 15) The southern Pacific is off to a solid start in 2013, gracing the western shores of the Americas solid surf over the last couple weeks. Approaching the 2013 Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile waiting period (April 15 – June 15), the short-term forecast is calling for more of the same in central Chile, where Punta de Lobos is located.

Throughout this week, fun 3’-6’ surf accompanied by light, variable winds, will be found at the point, while moving into next weekend (April 6-7), a healthy dose of longer period, 6’-10’ surf should slowly build. This is promising, compared to 2012’s sluggish start and eventual “no go” for the Ceremonial.

#3 There aren’t many waves on the East Coast of the United States that can hold 20-foot surf. Ruggles is one of them.

But the emblematic righthand reefbreak that skirts Newport, RI, is under siege. Expeditious plans to repair the Cliff Walk post-Sandy have recently surfaced that threaten… no, promise to ruin the most famous wave in New England.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation plans from the Coastal Resources Management Council application propose: 1) a large, armor stone break wall, spanning 20-feet at some points from the Cliff Walk to the mean high water line; and 2) two temporary causeways (i.e. jetties) 200-feet out and 40-feet across erected smack-dab in the channels of the Ruggles lineup. Construction is slated to begin in the next one to two months at the latest.

Though we’ve received no confirmation on how this monstrosity happened so quickly and so quietly, the funding likely came from the Hurricane Sandy relief package. And while the National Environmental Policy Act requires that projects undergo rigorous analysis for environmental and socioeconomic impacts, it seems probable that most of those were waived under “emergency” provisions.

“We are stunned,” said local luminary/ surf photographer Joe McGovern. “This thing is at a stage where they’re ready to go. They’re rushing it through with no notice, no public hearings. I haven’t seen any engineers or experts doing any kind of analysis of the impact on the environment, or define how long it’s gonna take. In the past, projects like this would take five or six months to get some kind of dialogue going. Now it seems all the rules and regulations have been set aside. A lot of corners are being cut to repair the damage from Sandy, and people are fearful this may be happening a lot more up and down the coast.”

Stay tuned as we approach opening day of the 2013 Quiksilver Ceremonial Chile, and weekly reports from the Condor himself, Mr. Peter Mel.

I didnt See the Quikpro finals. Wich isn’t strange since i live on the other side of the Planet.
No worries, i can see it with heats on demand. No problem for a few days. BUT now it is not possible anymore. Rounds 1-4 are still available bit no final ?
Why is that? I really can’t see a commercial reason not to run it!
Can you check with your new friends @ Quik ?
For your listeners on the other side of the Planet…….

SURF REPORT: Northwest: A small, shorter period W swell looks likely to move in Sunday afternoon and Monday. However, at this point, even good spots will be lucky to see much over waist high surf from this small pulse of swell. Stay tuned, we’ll have more details as we see the storm evolve in the next couple days.

Further out, nothing of significance is currently on the radar. A small, extreme angled NW swell is lining up for April 1-2. Another small W swell is on the radar for around the 4th-5th. Stay tuned, we’ll have more details on these possible swells as we see the storms develop.

SOUTH WEST: A small SSW swell will move in for April 1st-2nd, although average spots struggle to see anything more than waist high waves. Top spots in Orange County are a little better with knee-chest high waves.

In the long range, things definitely look more promising with a good size SSW swell on track for the weekend of the 6th-7th from a storm currently deepening near New Zealand. We are getting satellite confirmed wind of 35-50 knots in this storm, relatively well aimed at Southern California. Stay tuned, we’ll have more details on the exact timing and size of this swell over the next few days as we see the storm develop further.

#1 GREG LONG CHAMPION
Add another tick to Greg Long’s big-wave resume. Despite not winning a single event on the Big Wave World Tour, Long’s overall results were more consistent than the surf for the Maverick’s Invitational. His second in Peru, third at Mav’s and second at Nelscott Reef totaled up to a commanding, runaway victory over inaugural BWWT Champ Jamie Sterling.

Long was officially christened at the Surfing Heritage Foundation Museum in San Clemente on Saturday night. It was a mellow gathering full of competitors, staff, family, friends and industry executives.

Peter Mel, reigning BWWT Champion, called in via Skype while traveling through Costa Rica to congratulate Greg on his newly minted title. “It is my honor to pass the torch to another great young man, Mr. Greg Long,” Mel stated.

#2 RIP CURL PRO BELLS

JOHN JOHN OUT ;
TALKED WITH JOHN PYZEL he said out for Brazil as well.

Surf outlook: There are three swells that we’re watching, all originating from roughly the same area. Strong high pressure is located to the WSW of Western Australia, with a series of storms spinning up from the deep latitudes of the Southern Ocean. Peak swell periods over the next week will be late Thursday/Friday; Sunday; and Tuesday afternoon/Wednesday.

Women’s upset round 1 ALana Blanchard took down Steph Gilmore.

The first of these SW swells (220-240) will be the smallest of the bunch, assuming the longer range storms behave as forecast. Look for a building trend Thursday afternoon/evening and peaking into Friday morning. Waves at Bells will be in the head high+ to overhead range, with sets running up to a couple feet overhead at times. Offshore flow in the morning on Friday will turn light to moderate onshore through the afternoon. Easing surf takes over on Saturday, as local wind conditions remain generally favorable.

Going a little further out, a larger and longer period SW swell (210-240) will build in and be strongest on Sunday, from a storm and adjacent high pressure now churning in the Southern Ocean. Forecast models indicate this high/low combo will generate wind of 35-50 knots and seas in excess of 35 feet. The resulting swell will produce surf in the solid head high to overhead range at Bells with sets running several feet overhead.

Beyond that, a similar looking storm and adjacent high pressure will develop over the weekend. If this set up behaves as forecast we will see another good size SW swell for Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday the 2nd-3rd. Stay tuned.

#3 Billabong XXl The nominees have just been announced for the 2013 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards presented by Pacifico, and it’s going to be another amazing year for surfing as the sport’s best continue to smash down the barriers of what was once thought possible.

The Billabong XXL Awards competition window closed on March 20, the start of spring, with every wave ridden at every big wave break around the world in the previous 12 months in contention. The five biggest or best in each of the key categories have now been identified based on the photographic evidence, and the winners will be crowned at a gala awards show at the Grove Theater in Anaheim, California on May 3, with over $120,000 up for grabs across seven diverse event categories. (Four are announced today, leaving the wipeout and two performance categories to be announced in April.)

A truly global event, this year’s XXL entries included hundreds of images and video clips of scores of surfers in action in dozens of countries spanning all the world’s oceans. And while many up-and-coming surfers made their mark this year, when the vast number of entries were distilled down to the very best, there were a number of names left who are no strangers to the XXL winner’s podium.

In an unprecedented outcome, Hawaiian surfer Shane Dorian has been nominated in all four of the categories revealed today, including the Ride of the Year, Pacifico Paddle, Pacifico Tube, and XXL Biggest Wave for his landmark paddle-in tube ride on an enormous wave at Jaws, Maui during an extraordinary early-season swell which slammed the Hawaiian Chain in early October.

California’s Shawn Dollar is right on Dorian’s heels with a trio of nominations including the R.O.T.Y., Pacifico Paddle and XXL Biggest Wave for his own exceptionally tall wave caught during a perilous December session at the notorious Cortes Bank, located in the open ocean 100 miles offshore of the California coast. This is the first time in the event’s 13-year history that any waves caught by paddle power have been nominated in the XXL Biggest Wave division, until now that division had been only accessed by surfers using tow-in assists by personal watercraft.

#4 Slater’s WavePark hits financial hurdle

Legal troubles with the project’s piggy bank are really kinking the King’s chlorine hose.

Before you read this, go down to your local spot. You don’t have to surf, but just gaze out at the ocean. Watch the waves closely. Feel the wind and observe the current. What peak is best? Keep watching, don’t look away. Like what you see?

You better, because you’re still gonna be looking at it for a while. For some years now, the inherently fantastic Kelly Slater Wave Company has promised the future. It has sworn to go Steve Jobs on the world of Wave Pools and build us a game changer. You’ve surely seen it before. That ring of fun, water swirling around and creating a forever perfect wave. It was supposed to be science meets the sea and rid surfing of the biggest detriment there is: lack of a consistent playing field.

Unfortunately, there’s recently been a chip taken out of the King’s jewel. With capitalism comes greed and with greed comes corruption. LM Investments, the company funding the Wave Company’s prospective location, has had a good taste of all three. Johnny Law is frowning upon LM and the company has essentially been shut down. Bummer. On the bright side, Slater’s wave company wasn’t technically in business with LM, so the dream lives on. It just needs to dream up a new piggybank.

Back to your home break. Doesn’t look too bad, right? There’s only one guy out and it looks like he’s getting a wave in. Might as well. I guess we can’t all have tennis courts.

SURF REPORT: San Diego slips into spring conditions as we head into the last week of March. We will have a small but steady mix of WNW-NW energy (285-300) from both local windswell and a couple of storms that have stayed over by Hawaii. The local windswell will be doing most of the work, but none of the swells look very big at this point. The WNW-NW exposed spots will be in the knee-waist high range with a few of the top spots seeing some chest high+ sets (if the windswell gets frisky at some point during the week). At the same time there will also be some SSW-SW swells in the water (195-220), which should have enough W in them to reach the SD summer spots. The Southern Hemi’s are actually bigger/more organized swells and will peak at the start of the week and then very slowly trail off as we head past Wednesday…while the SSW-SW swells are peaking the better summer breaks (mostly the North County standouts) will have waist-shoulder high surf with less consistent head high waves. A few of the best combo breaks, that like both the WNW and SW, have the potential for a few overhead faces early in the week but that will drop off relatively quickly.

Weatherwise it looks like the eddy is going to spin up for much of the upcoming weekend and at least the first half of next week…So SD will see a mix of S-SW winds around 5-8 knots with a couple of days where the winds shift S-SE-ESE at least for the morning hours.

Basically there will be some surf out there this week (a bit of windswell, some small WNW pulses, and the overlapping SSW-SW swells, but it will have its share of issues, some shadowing, some onshore wind texture, and then a slow fade in size as we head toward next weekend. On the positive side the revival of the eddy will slowly start to warm up ocean temps…so if the afternoon winds stay down we could see them start to break back into the 60’s.

EMAIL #1: YeahGuy Bassy & Baldy! I watched the ‘Surfwise’ doco on the Paskowitz family last night based on your recent show and found it really interesting.
My wife was in the same room half watching and sprayed a mouthful of tea across her keyboard when 88 year old Doc mentioned how his life changed when he met the girl who taught him how to “eat pussy” CLASSIC!
Looking forward your next show post yesterdays epic quicky pro finals day & I saw Baldy tweeting some commentatory bias comments.
I thought it was amazing the how the ‘Super Heat’ highlighted the massive skill set difference between the top ASP surfers & the top Free surfers.
While Mick, Kelly & Parko were dropping 9′s & 10′s in the Semi’s and Finals – Ando & Reynolds struggled to make any decent waves.

Hey have you seen this 30 sec clip of Kelly post heat confronting Journo Will Swanton? It shows a side of Kelly rarely seen.
Will wrote that Kelly fits the profile for a drug cheat. Love the show, Andy from Oz.

Scott,

Does anyone remember if any major pro surf contests have ever had to deal with locals that literally stayed in the lineup during the contest? I figure it must have happened in Hawaii, Oz, or maybe NorCal at some point in competitive pro surfing history…You and Baldy are super old so I figured you should have some first-hand knowledge on this topic.

Love the show, James

#5 The Kelly Slater Wave Company has been dealt a blow with today’s announcement that LM Investments has been placed into voluntary administration. LM Investments is being investigated by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission for multiple breaches of corporation law.

LM Investments is a fund manager that reportedly holds $3 billion worth of investors funds and operates in 70 countries and were involved in a property development called Maddison Gardens at Pimpana, north of the Gold Coast. 62.5% of LM Investments entire portfolio is invested in Maddison Estate.

A wave pool was planned at Maddison Estate and this where the Kelly Slater Wave Company becomes involved. Last August LM Investments signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kelly Slater Wave Company to develop the world’s first continuous wave pool at Maddison Estate.

The Kelly Slater Wave Company has been in a first-to-market race with Webber Wave Pools and this news appeared to give the Kelly Slater Wave Company the lead.

Today it was announced that LM Investments has been placed into voluntary administration. LM Investments maintain that, if finished, Maddison Estate would be worth between $1 billion and $1.6 billion although it’s unlikely they will get the opportunity to realise that now.

To that end we’re building a 50K sq ft. climate controlled free standing structure with floors and carpet — on the beach. A major undertaking. But like I said, we’re doing it right.

The great success we’ve had with Sacred Craft and now The Boardroom is due in large part to the shapers and board builders commitment and passion. Their surfboards and their ethos of authenticity has made these shows a great place to congregate. The greater surf industry has seen it. They want in. Of course we all now that since day one the surf industry has been about surfboards. Without a doubt, the very first surf commerce involved a surfer paying or bartering with another surfer to build him a surfboard. Then came Blake, Simmons, Pacific System Homes. Then Quigg, Velzy, Noll, Hobie and many many others – the list is impressive. Passion for surfboards. You cannot have the surf industry without shapers / baordbuilder passion for building unique and exceptional craft.

Now we are going to share it: their passion, their vision, their authenticity — for the whole surf industry to see.

#3 John John Pulls Out of Quiksilver Pro

John John Florence 2012 ASP World No. 4 and ASP Dream Tour sophomore, has withdrawn from the opening event of the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) season, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover, citing an ankle injury sustained during yesterday’s expression session.

Florence secured a convincing Round 1 win over Kai Otton (AUS), 33, and Patrick Gudauskas (USA), 27, last Tuesday and looked like a contender to post a big result in the season-opening event. However, an injury sustained while attempted a full-rotation aerial in Saturday’s expression session resulted in his withdrawal from the event today, just hours before his Round 3 match-up with Adam Melling (AUS), 27.

Melling advances directly to Round 4 of competition. The ASP wish John John a speedy recovery and look forward to him returning to the water soon.

#5 RED BULL JAWS, Paddle at Pe’ahi enters the final week

of its holding period today, with the last day being next Friday, March 15.

Since December 7, 2012, the event’s 21 Invitees have been ready to activate for this one-day big wave paddle-in event – the first of its kind to be held at Jaws, on Maui, Hawaii. However, an optimal day of surf with wave face heights in the specified range of 30 to 50 feet, out of the NNW with light winds, has not presented itself. There have been a handful of invaluable warm-up days for the surfers, but the required size and/or quality standards ultimately fell short thus far.

“The New Years Eve swell was for sure the closest we’ve come since the waiting period opened,” explains Jaws local and event Invitee Ian Walsh. “It was definitely a fun day but a touch inconsistent and a touch small for what the surfers and the spectators want to see. We’ve had a few swells right on the line, but not quite big enough.”

“This winter has been very mediocre,” Walsh added. “We’ve had a lot of really strong winds, a pretty decent amount of rain, but as far as waves go, very mediocre. We haven’t had too many really big days and the big days that have come have been with weather or difficult winds.”

GRAIN SURFBOARDS MIKE LAVECCHIA CALLS IN ABOUT KCIKCSTARTER PROJECT:
“Truck-n-Trailer” Mobile Surfboard-Building Classroom

by Mike & Brad from Grain Surfboards
Project: To share the craft of wood board-building with the West we need a truck we can sleep in, towing a trailer/mobile classroom.

So our plan is this: with your help, we’ll get a truck we can sleep in, and a utility trailer large enough to fit piles of tools, shaping stands, and gear, and we’ll hit the road out west. Your funding assistance will also help outfit this rig – for instance, we’ll need some mobile shop-tools, and other stuff classes require. If things work out, we’ll set this up to burn alternative fuels as well.

The Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection – May 11, 2013 at the Orange County Fairgrounds

The theme is “California Gold” and the Surfing Heritage (SH) is focusing on just that, boards and memorabilia with a California flair from the ’20s through the ’80s. We’ve already coalesced a solid selection of “Gold’ from various sellers and are actively searching for more. We’re anticipating between 50 prime vintage surfboards for the live auction and at least 40 items including surfboards for the silent auction.

Randy Rarick, a member of the Surfing Heritage Auction Advisory Committee, and a great friend of the Surfing Heritage, has lent his auction expertise to the Surfing Heritage and will also serve as the emcee of this gala.

Please put the Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection (May 11, 2013) on your radar!

Story #3 out of Auctralian press… ELEVEN-times world surfing champion Kelly Slater says recreational drug use in his sport is “rampant”.

But the American superstar does not believe drug-testing is the answer, saying addicts have to want to kick the habit and need support.

In an exclusive interview with The Courier-Mail ahead of the season-opening Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast, Slater also quashed retirement speculation and vowed to chase a 12th world title at the age of 41.

He opened up about drugs in sport after the Lance Armstrong scandal and claims against some Australian sports.

He said he did not believe surfing had a performance-enhancing drug problem because he did not “think there’s a drug you can take to make you surf better”.

Asked if there was a recreational drug problem, he said: “There clearly is – absolutely. There’s no denying that, it’s rampant, it’s full-on.”
Access all Areas. $1 for the first 28 days. Only $2.95 a week thereafter. Learn more.

Slater said the Association of Surfing Professionals had introduced drug-testing last year, but it had faltered.

“They tested us at the first event and I never got tested again all year,” he said.

“Why talk about it and not do it? Why bother? Either do it or don’t do it.”

However, Slater said he did not believe drug-testing would help surfers hooked on recreational substances.

He questioned Queensland surf legend Gary “Kong” Elkerton’s assertion, in a recently-released biography, that drug-testing might have saved Slater’s friend, triple world champion Andy Irons, who died in 2010 after battling substance abuse.

“Those are personal, private matters and it’s really hard to dredge them up publicly and come to any kind of conclusion,” Slater said.

“Andy was the one who put himself in that situation. Had he had more outside pressure to change, that might have pushed him over the edge more quickly.

“I know a lot of drug addicts and you can’t force them to go get help if they don’t want it. You just have to show those people love and support and let them know that if they need your help, you’re there.”

Slater said he would support more stringent drug-testing in surfing.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily my battle to deal with because I’ve been drug-free my whole life,” he said.

Despite losing the world title to Joel Parkinson in an epic battle in Hawaii in December, Slater said he was motivated to chase a 12th crown.

“I’m going to go for it and try to put together a good year,” he said.

“Pretty much every day I get some older dude come up to me and say ‘Oh, mate, you’ve got to keep going’.

“I was one heat away from winning the title last year. I came really close and it wasn’t really heartbreaking. I was happy for Parko.

“But right now everyone’s got a target on their back we’re all starting at zero.”

#4 story THE BOARDROOM AT HB US OPEN OF SURF JULY 23-27
The freestanding, climate-controlled pavilion will be held alongside the world’s largest surfing festival between July 23 to 27, during the last week of the competition.
Will the Boardroom still take place at its original location in San Diego, or will this new show serve as its sole location now?

Scott Bass: All locations, venues, and regions are in discussion and we absolutely look forward to serving as many regions/locales as the market will bare.

My surfboard show roots in San Diego are strong. I’m in the water everyday—in San Diego. San Diego is the foundational location, the genesis location, if you will, of The Boardroom shows. A San Diego show will happen again.

It’s also good to take a break from a locale. I produced five shows in a row, from 2007 to 2012, in San Diego. I’m also very proud of the fact that we have produced shows in Santa Cruz and Ventura.

Our track record indicates that we appreciate and understand that surfers are more or less regional. The opportunity to showcase surf gear and to highlight local shapers and manufacturers in different areas throughout North America—and the world for that matter—is in front of us.

The East Coast is wide open and we know that the East Coast surfer is looking to celebrate at The Boardroom. As you may know, The Boardroom is co-locating with Surf Expo in Orlando Florida this September. I visited out there last September and in January. Surfers are frothing for a consumer show. They are enthusiasts. They are passionate. This is who they are. This is who we are. They embrace everything surf—just as I do, just as my children do, just as my neighbor does. We are all surfers, therefore we love surfboards.

How will the format work?

Scott Bass: From a specific granular view, The Boardroom is two days trade, two days consumer. It’s important to note, however, that from a global perspective The Boardroom is a celebration of everything surf: industry, sport, culture, lifestyle.

All of that of course begins and ends with the surfboard. From that prism, The Boardroom is one big cultural happening and there is something for everyone. Retailers order product. Manufacturers discuss product. Surfers take in the latest innovations. The Boardroom is a multifaceted, five-dimensional surf magazine. Everything comes to life. Don’t just look, pick the gear up. Ride the boards. Test the wetsuit. Pull on the stretch boardies. Quiz the manufacturer. Talk to the pros. Order a board. Get an autograph. Watch fresh new clips. Smell the resin. Ride an alaia. Test a handplane. Compare fins. Watch the shaping. Discuss board design. Talk shop. It’s all there in front of you. Not just 3-d, 5-d.”

What has been the City’s reaction, and how do you see this relationship evolving in the future?

Will it look and feel like previous Boardroom shows in San Diego?

Let me be clear. It all centers around the alpha and the omega of our surf industry, our surf world, and our surf lifestyle: the surfboard. The look and feel will be the same. The surf manufacturer, the shaping culture, the vibe is centered squarely on the surfboard — our iconic symbol of enduring youth.

Think back. Way back. Way back before instant surf access or a professional world tour, or surfboard mounted cameras. The surf industry was built by surfers named Butte, Downing, Hobie, Velzy, Edwards, Bing, Hap, Noll, Takayama, Aipa, and many many others. Shapers. All of them. Surfboard manufacturers. Their ads filled the surf mags. They dressed a certain way and had their own style. They stood out. Mainstreamers would look at them and scoff.

In 2013 their legacy — dozens and dozens of core manufacturers, shapers, surfers, surf industry designers from around the world — will exhibit at The Boardroom. They will be exalted. They will be center stage. Our industry flows from its core — the surfboard.

Thankfully surf equipment has evolved and technology has blossomed. Now surf gear consists of skateboards, boardshorts, wetsuits, fins boxes, watches, leashes, waterproof cameras, rack systems, wax, rash guards, travel, clothing and swimwear made specifically by surfers and for surfing. Paipos are back! Only this time they have GoPro cameras mounted on them. Classic. The Kuhio Groin crew would be stoked!

I love surfboards. Surfers love surfboards. The Boardroom is an extension of that passion. Lots of surf gear, lots of surfers, lots of sincere stoke. At the end of the day surfers really only care about two things, waves and the equipment to ride them with.

Now, to be a little more specific, there will be a Best Of Show exhibit, two shaping bays, live shaping, laminating demonstrations, surfboard exhibits, an Icons of Foam shaping tribute. Legends of shaping. Legends of lifestyle. Short films. Genuine surf stoke and happiness. A few scoffs would be cool too.

Hey Scott and Baldy, Awesome shows! Keep ‘um coming and hope you get that second hour!
Long time listener here from Nor Cal. Have been a fan since the “Down The Line Radio” days ;)
So now that Taylor Knox is retired from the WCT, I was thinking it might be a good segment to get him on the phone or in studio and talk about his retirement, reflections, moving on, etc. Timing might be good now also to discuss his and Snips’ trip up here to surf epic Ocean Beach SF last weekend. (Snips’ wipeout and broken neck is also a relevant related story – so glad he’s expected to make a full recovery, yikes.) And now that TK is off the tour, maybe he’ll finally answer the question about why he never took an HPSB Bonzer out in a heat!!
Looking forward to new shows with continuing great commentary and interviews.
Aloha, Koa Pickering Nor Cal

#2 “I heard Scott Bass’ surf report (on KPBS) and have a couple of questions: What is buoy energy and what does it tell a surfer? This morning, I thought I heard a wave description of “lumpy wagon.” Did I hear correctly and, if so, what does that mean?

Thanks for enlightening me.” Buoy energy = buoys, stationed offshore in various locales, register the swell approaching the coastline. Lumpy wagons= surf venacular referring to mixed up, junky, unclean, un-symetric waves, chaos but also, hollow, tubular. Usually happens after a big wind event / storm, followed by an evening of offshore winds.

SEGMENT BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE 100 WAVE CHALLENGE THIS SUMMER IN MISSION BEACH TH E100 WAVE CHALLENGE 100 WAVE CHALLENGE DOT COM

Joshua and Dorian Paskowitz tell us why you are here, (a big art reception at Bliss 101 in Encinitas).
when what time where, how,

What is Bliss 101, sounds warm and inviting.

How long have you been an artist, were you born an artist?

Doc abandoned the medical practice, loaded his nine children and wife, Juliette, into a camper, and traveled all around the country. In the meantime the eight sons—David, Jonathan, Abraham, Israel, Moses, Adam, Salvador Daniel, and Joshua—and one daughter, Navah, became world-class surfers, all while strictly adhering to their Jewish faith and keeping a diet that included no sugar and no fat. Eventually the Paskowitzes went on to found a surfing camp, which several of the brothers run to this day.

The documentary SurfWise explores the wonders of a vagabond childhood, from growing up on the sea to a frank recognition of the realities of life, as well as the pitfalls—most of the Paskowitz children, all adults now, recognize that their upbringing poorly prepared them to lead normal lives.

Joshua: 10 years, 12 years after the camper thing was already done, all the stuff, each brother wrestled with their own version of the story of the family. In one artistic swoop, Doug and Jonathan and the people involved with the Surfwise film, have been able to unify all those disparate vision into one single, clear story. We’ve never been able to get that close to completeness ever. Just to round up the herd of cats that is the Paskowitz family and get them all pointed in one direction is an impossibility. We’re all very proud of Jonathan and everything that he’s done. We believe in the movie 100%. we feel like people will get a lot of out it. There’s some message that we all believe in.

Paskowitz clan, a unique story… a unique family , unique patriarch, unique upbringing.

You brought the family up in a School bus along the coastline in Southern California and Baja.

This could never happen again in our society: You’d be labeled as a homeless family, living in a car, and child protective services would be called, all of your children would be taken away. Your thoughts.

Joshua: if we equate the Paskowitz family with country of America and the founding fathers, Dorian is Thomas Jefferson, but Mom is George Washington.

Courageous. That’s what comes to mind. Courage.

I’ve met David, Abraham, Jonathon, and Izzy, all in separate contexts, never together. And I came away very impressed, very centered individuals. I think it comes form the love that family brings.

Surfing and Health – What’s the best energy drink for surfing?

Surfing and Peace: In the mid-east… Will Iran’s Ahmadinejad ever ride a wave?

XGAMES REAL SURF $10K Video challenge
From old-school surf cinema to the modern-day Vimeo clip, monumental performances are spread, new locations revealed, divergent equipment shared, and the progression of the sport and the art of surfing march ever forward, documented throughout.

X Games is happy to introduce Real Surf to the continuum. In following the overwhelming successes of X Games’ Real Skate and Real Snow, Real Surf has pooled eight of the most talented performers the world over and asked them to assemble the most potent video edits possible. The winning video walks away with an X Games gold medal. The Fan Favorite — as decided by you, the reader and critic — comes away with a cool $10,000.

Kelly Slater, the 11-time world champion, headlines the eight-surfer video shootout. Logic would dictate that the winningest wave-rider of all time is a heavy favorite, but victory is hardly assured.
The barrier-pushing Australian contingent, featuring Julian Wilson, Josh Kerr, Chippa Wilson and Dion Agius, are renowned the world over for their performances on film. For the boys Down Under, video edits are like Vegemite and toast — it’s what they do best. Julian and Kerr are both top-10 surfers on the ASP World Tour, and they have a flair for the dramatic when it comes to their free surf sessions. Chippa and Agius have carved out their careers in front of the camera, delivering some of the more memorable video performances in recent years.

That should be enough to keep Slater’s hands full, but add Brazil’s Gabriel Medina, whose backflip at Off the Wall this winter went ridiculously viral, and heavy-footed South African Jordy Smith, who is hot off the release of his HD masterpiece “Bending Colour,” and things start to get real interesting real quick.

The addition of 2011 Innersection winner Matt Meola, who is equally adept at paddling into 30-foot Jaws and landing 720s, kicks things up another notch. The best surfers in the world, serving up their best performances with X Games gold on the line … what could be better?

The Real Surf series gets underway with Round 1 voting on April 2. Winners will be announced during X Games Brazil, April 18-21. Stay tuned, surfing’s about to get real.

Surfing Industry, Surf News: An All-star Lineup of Shapers, Craftsman, Designers & Manufacturers

by on Sep.21, 2009, under This Weeks Show, Uncategorized

An all-star lineup of shapers, craftsman, designers & manufacturers of the surfing industry will take over San Diego for the third annual Del Mar Sacred Craft Surf Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, October 10th and 11th.

The stellar list includes, but is not limited to, Bing Copeland, Peter St. Pierre, Mark Richards, John Cherry, Rusty Preisendorfer, Brian Hilbers, Matt Calvani, Reno Abellira, Pat Rawson, Joe Baguess, Firewire, John Kies, Gary Linden, Daniel Thompson, SurfTech, Robert August, Gary Hanel, Axxe Wetsuits, Tim Bessell, Stu Kenson, Quiksilver, Dennis Murphy, Bruce Jones, and Ricky Carroll. Of course this years’ Tribute to the Masters Shape-off honoree, Dick Brewer (who will be celebrating his 73rd birthday) will also be in attendance.

The complete list of over 100 shapers and exhibitors is listed on the website at http://www.sacredcraftexpo.com/exhibitors.html.

Sacred Craft Surf Expo 2009 has something for everyone from board demo’s to seminars to artwork to music. One of this years’ main attraction is the Vintage Surfboard Antique Road Show event, taking place on Saturday October 10th from 10am – 1pm.

“We are urging surfers to dig through their garages, their storage space, and their backyards for collectable surfboards and magazines that they think may hold some real value,” explained expo director Scott Bass. “Anything special and unique from say, 1985 or so and earlier, especially if it is in good shape, probably has value above and beyond normal used-board pricing. Our expert appraisers can determine a estimated value.”

Special events are being planned around and during the Sacred Craft Expo weekend. First off, make sure to get down to 15th St. for the TransWorld SURF Sacred Craft Magical Morning Board Demo, just down the street from the expo. The general surfing public is invited to 15th St. reef in Del Mar on Saturday October 10th from 7am – 10am. Come on down and try out boards and wetsuits from Sacred Craft exhibitors.

The Sacred Craft Surf Expo opens its doors immediately following the TransWorld SURF Sacred Craft Magical Morning Board Demo.

You will want to be at the expo early! The first 100 attendees in the door will be put in a special “early bird” drawing for a brand new Firewire fish surfboard. Great odds! And no wonder, just a few doors down from the DM racetrack!

Musicians will play on the outdoors stage all weekend long. Various groups are scheduled including Australian longboard champion Beau Young, Miles Kinney & Tower 7, a YardBirds cover band; the acoustic stylings of Kevin White; and Future Fins brand ambassador Phil ‘Boo’ Stubbs.

On Saturday Oct 10, make sure to stay around and check out a special SACRED CRAFT premier screening of the new Australian documentary film “SEARCHING FOR MICHAEL PETERSON”.

A special invite-only VIP birthday reception for Tribute to the Masters Shape-off honoree Dick Brewer is being planned for October 3rd at Wade Koniakowsky’s Ocean Art Gallery. More information to be revealed as it becomes available.

In addition to all of this, Sacred Craft seminars run all weekend long at the Sacred Craft Surf Expo. On the docket are Drew Brophy’s inspirational slide show and spray paint demonstration; an epoxy laminating demonstration by Dave Daum; UCSD’s Stephanie Moyerman discusses feminine physique and surfboard design for women; Lee Vanderhurst professes on surfboard design 101 during “The Idiot’s Guide to Surfboard Design”.  A Multi-media and hands-on guide to the basics in surfboard design from outline to rocker, how to measure it and what it does.  Know how your surfboard should work before you catch your first wave; UCSD’s Benjamin Thomson talks about natural frequency (recoil rate) of a surfboard and why it is important to you!; Whitney Guild will present Turn Up The Volume! and discuss the importance of knowing the volume of each of the surfboards in your quiver. VOLUME is rarely discussed, but is an important single number that can be used to describe each of your boards; and the Groundswell Society discusses apex predators and their role in surfboard design. A complete schedule will be available shortly.

Media outlets scheduled to attend include The Surfers Journal, TransWorld SURF, TransWorld BUSINESS, SLIDE Magazine, FUEL TV, & MyLocalLineupTV Channel 16.

About SACRED CRAFT SURF EXPO
We feel it is time to reassert a philosophy that puts the surfboard-and the modern-day kahunas who craft and design them-back at the forefront of surf culture. To place that influence, that importance, that responsibility, back in the hands of the artisans who shape, design and manufacture our sacred crafts-and ultimately our future.

We put the “board” in boardshorts.
