TOP 5 STORIES — SURFING NEWS: Mavericks Contest and Big Wave World Tour Join Forces
Early Winter Swells Anticipated for Mavericks Invitational; Organizers Announce Partnership with the Big Wave World Tour
(Half Moon Bay, Calif.) – Looking ahead to an El Niño winter and the anticipation of big waves early in the season, the organizers of the Mavericks Invitational big wave surf contest are opening the contest season on November 1, 2012.
Following the approval of the permit by the San Mateo County Harbor District last week, the organizers kicked into high gear the planning for this year’s famed big wave surfing contest off Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay. The contest waiting period is officially November 1, 2012, through March 31, 2013.
“It looks like we’re headed for an early winter, and we want to take advantage of the big swells in November,” said Mavericks Pioneer Jeff Clark, part of a group of business and community leaders organizing the event. “The surfers are ready, the community is ready, and we are stoked to make this amazing event happen this year.”
Mavericks Invitational organizers are also announcing a partnership with the Big Wave World Tour. Founded by famed big wave rider and shaper, Gary Linden, the Big Wave World Tour (BWWT), is an international surfing phenomenon that organizes the best big wave riders in the first-ever big wave surfing league. The tour showcases the world’s top surfers and local standouts as they battle extreme conditions, and each other, in a season long battle to become the next Big Wave World Champion. The tour includes events in Chile, Peru, Mexico, and now in California.
“Big wave surfing and Mavericks have become synonymous, and a competition there a dream come true,” said Linden, who has served as head judge for previous contests at Mavericks. “Being part of the event is an extreme honor, personally and for the Big Wave World Tour.”
The association with BWWT allows those surfers who are part of the tour to use their performance at Mavericks as part of their overall scoring for the season. The list of competitors for this year’s Mavericks Invitational will not change from last season, when a lackluster winter dashed hopes for a contest.
“The competitors will still earn their way through dedication to surfing Mavericks, proving their mettle at Mavericks, and being voted into the event by their peers,” said Clark. “Gary Linden has experience at Mavericks, making it easy to integrate their judging system and water patrol into our event, while keeping true to the unique nature of Mavericks.”
Mavericks Invitational is the world’s premier, high adrenaline, big wave surfing event. This one-day, invitation-only surfing competition is held at the legendary Mavericks surf break located ½ mile offshore at Pillar Point Harbor, just 20 minutes south of San Francisco. The 24 most daring big-wave surfers in the world will attempt to tame the massive swells on the biggest and best day of the 2012 winter season. PADDLE FOR DAISY
Al’s eight-year-old granddaughter Daisy Love Merrick, after undergoing six surgeries and twenty-two rounds of chemotherapy, is currently battling cancer for the third time. As Daisy embarks on the next steps of her treatment, she will be facing several additional rounds of chemotherapy, in addition to a stem cell transplant with progressive treatments in both the United States and Israel. The estimated cost of Daisy’s treatment not covered by insurance is expected to total close to half a million dollars.
This is where you come in. On September 1, 2012, beginning at 9 am, groups around the country will meet to hold a paddle-a-thon, at which group photos will be taken and sent to the Merrick family and someone will say a prayer for Daisy before the group paddles a preset distance.
The group behind the Paddle For Daisy initiative, Christian Surfers (CS), will be building a simple and transferable template for the Paddle-a-thon fundraising event, with 100 percent of the donations going directly to the Merrick family. Donations will be received by the Christian Surfers either via check or via online donations.
Donate. Get out and paddle at the event. Show your love and support for Daisy and the Merrick family.

You have seen the waste that is current surfboard packing; packing for travel ; tell us about your experience with the old style packing materials.
You’ve decided to change the way surfers pack their boards for trips; the way the surfboard manufacturers pack their boards for wholesale shipping.
What was the process like of getting to an eco -friendly packing material : what was this road to discovery?
Where are we at?
What is it going to take to get the surfboard industry to make this simple and smart step towards multi-use enviro-friendly packaging/packing materials and away from single use plastics?

# 1) Molokai to Oahu World Championships dedicates Race to George Ramos
Keep George In Your Heart as You Cross the Ka’iwi Channel
As many of you are getting ready for your race in Molokai next week there will be one paddler missing at the start but he will be close to our hearts – George Ramos. George is the soul of this event, having paddled solo in all 15 years of the race. Always ready for the challenge and always ready to share a smile, a story and laugh.
George was recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and has another challenge ahead of him this year. Although he won’t be paddling physically in the channel he will be paddling with many as we dedicate this race, the 16th annual Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard World Championships, to George.
George has been unable to work over the last few months and as you know Cancer is not cheap. We have set up a 32::32 donation site for those interested in helping offset some of his medical bills. More importantly we ask that you keep George in your hearts as you cross the ka’iwi channel.
#3 ELL’s 11-12 team began play in the Subdivision III (State) tournament with a 7-3 win over San Bernardino Champion Highland Little League. ELL to face Aliso Viejo LL at Aliso Viejo on Sun, July 22, 11:30 a.m.
#4 WESTERN Australia’s reputation as the world’s deadliest place for shark attacks is hurting tourism and the federal government should consider lifting the ban on fishing of great whites, the state government says. The 4m killer, dubbed Brutus by surfers near Wedge Island, 180km north of Perth, mauled surfer Ben Linden two weeks ago as he surfed with a mate about 9am.
“Five fatalities in Western Australia (in 10 months) is unprecedented and cause for great alarm,” Mr Moore said.
“It won’t be helping our tourism industry and those people who want to come here to enjoy an ocean experience will be turned away because of this situation.”

# 1) Jeffreys Bay — Brazilian surfer Adriano De Souza has won the ASP 6-Star Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay defeating French surfer Joan Duru in small and difficult conditions in the Final with polished and dynamic surfing.
It was an icy winter day that dawned for the remaining competitors in the Billabong Pro J-Bay today, but with contestable waves running down the point, contest director Luke Egan showed no hesitation in sending the remaining competitors straight out into the water. “We’re going to crown a winner today, weather permitting,” said Egan.
20 Years Since the Dream Team – USA Surfing: Can we bring home the GOLD?

Hey Micah Byrne & Ryan Simmons Coaches of the USA Surf Team Juniors
Tell us a little about yourselves ; why are you qualified for the job as coaches of the USA surf Team — 2013 ISA World Juniors.
How much are you getting paid?
PT brought home the silver – that’s the Best the USA Juniors has ever done.
Who is on the team?
Jake Marshall, Jake Davis, Kanoa Igorashi, Conner Coffin, Parker Coffin, Taylor Clark, Cam Richards, Ian Gentil, Jake Halstead
What is the plan to bring us a gold medal?
Kolohe Andino missed Peru ISA & Panama ISAJr Worlds; he passed on surfing for his country – his dream wasn’t to win GOLD for his country, his dream was to go qualify for the WTour.
Is the system dysfunctional? – kids are pros or amateur?
Are the kids and their professional aspirations – are they bigger than the ISA and Olympic dream?
Is this a rebuilding year – 2013 – for the team?
Kanoa Igarashi (USA) just won the U18 as a fourteen year old.
What does this win mean for you?
“It’s pretty good. Brother (Kolohe Andino) won this contest last year and he’s on the World Tour now. It’s a good confidence booster for me for the next year.”
What are your future plans?
“Just surf a bunch, film, do some trips and have fun with it. Winning the King of the Groms in France is my next contest goal.”
Notice he doesn’t mention bringing home the Gold medal for the USA surf team.
Systemic problem that involves the sponsors, their team managers, the parents, the industry: Not up to you to change it, but what do you say to those that feel like the World Tour is more important than surfing for the USA surf team?
What will you do if and when a 17 year-old kids says, “Sorry coach, I can’t make practice or an event, I’m trying to qualify for blah blah blah…” ??
General Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf advice: Kick him off the team, tell him “best of luck to you, but the USA Surf Team requires commitment, tenacity and an undying desire to bring home the GOLD MEDAL for your country. Anything less than that is in our opinion, ungrateful and shortsighted, and surfers and their sponsors that can’t commit to the USA Surf Team program are, in our opinion, not thinking about the future of the child, the future of the sport and of the future of the surf industry as a whole.” Then, send out an industry wide Press Release to ESPN announcing as much. That’s the only way you will bring attention to this.
Until the surf industry demands that their kids i.e team riders surf for the USA Surf Team – we are stuck in copper/bronze toilet.
Guess which brand will take us out of this?? Guess which brand has the foresight to understand that USA surf Team success is good for business? VANS? Quiksilver? Billabong? Hurley? Volcom? NIKE? We shall see. Maybe none of them? Maybe the whole thing continues to flounder.
More General Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf advice: : Make the USA Juniors watch one of these documentaries: This is what it means to represent your country GOLD! GOLD damnit!
What would our 2013 USA Surf Team open division DREAM TEAM look like?
Kelly Slater
CJ Hobgood
Brett Simpson
Damian Hobgood
Evan Gieselman
Kolohe Andino
Kanoa Igarashi
Parker Coffin
Never in the history of the sport has the atmosphere for creating a Dream Team been better? Who/what is going to stop it? The ASP? The ASP has never been weaker.
There is a massive gap in the ASP schedule. Create a Dream Team scenario?
In hindsight, would you have run the Volcom FIJI Pro on the biggest surfable day ever, with the best surf athletes in the world?
Who will win the 2012 World Title this year?
The XGames has their JAM format in skating whereby the skaters drop into the ramp, one-at-a-time, until someone falls, then it is the next skaters turn, and so on and so forth…for twenty minutes. Is this a format that surfing contests could somehow be adopt at certain spots? Lowers, JBay.
Will Gabe Medina be the first Brazilian World Champ?

#3 New Hampshire gets indoor wave machine
Indoor skydiving has worked in south Nashua, so why not indoor surfing, too?
That’s the thinking behind a multimillion-dollar addition to SkyVenture, off Daniel Webster Highway, that by early next year will hold what its owners say will be the world’s largest indoor-surfing facility of its type.
“When we opened this, I said to my husband, ‘Now, we need the surf machine,’ ” said Laurie Greer, co-owner of SkyVenture, which opened in 2006 as the only Northeast facility of its type. She was only half-joking.
