“I know what surfing is,” Kelly Slater said. “Surfers know what surfing is. I actually don’t care if surfing becomes the biggest thing in the world or disappears and there is no pro surfing.

“Basically our sport is run by the sponsors. Because of that, it becomes like a marketing project for these companies. Imagine Nike and adidas and Puma and all these companies coming together to run soccer or the NBA. It’s not going to happen, and it shouldn’t happen. But that’s what we have in surfing.”

Today we talk about THE RICK GRIFFIN MOVIE PROJECT WITH STEVE BARILOTTI.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/49615095/griffin-the-film

FROM WIKIPEDIA (code for : could be bs, but it’s on the internet , so it must be true?) Richard Alden Griffin (June 18, 1944 – August 18, 1991) was an American artist and one of the leading designers of psychedelic posters in the 1960s. As a contributor to the underground comix movement, his work appeared regularly in Zap Comix. Griffin was closely identified with the Grateful Dead, designing some of their best known posters and record jackets. His work within the surfing subculture included both film posters and his comic strip, Murphy.

Griffin was born near Palos Verdes amidst the surfing culture of southern California. Griffin biographer Tim Stephenson notes:

His father was an engineer and amateur archaeologist and as a boy Rick accompanied him on digs in the Southwest. It was during this time that Rick was exposed to the Native American and ghost town artifacts that were to influence his later work. Rick was taught to surf by Randy Nauert at the age of 14 at Torrance Beach. The pair had met at Alexander Flemming Jr. High, and were to become lifelong friends, Rick producing much of the artwork for Randy’s future band, the Challengers.[1]

While attending Nathaniel Narbonne High School in the Harbor City area of Los Angeles, he produced numerous surfer drawings, which led to his surfing comic strip, “Murphy” for Surfer magazine in 1961, with Griffin’s character featured on the front cover the following year. In 1964, he left Surfer and briefly attended Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts), where he met his future wife, artist Ida Pfefferle. That same year, he hung out with the group of artists and musicians known as the Jook Savages.

He traveled with Ida on a Mexican surfing trip and later planned a move to San Francisco after seeing the psychedelic rock posters designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley. In late 1966, the couple arrived in San Francisco, where they first lived in their van before moving to Elsie Street in the Bernal Heights district.[1] In the mid-1960s, he participated in Ken Kesey’s Acid Tests. His first art exhibition was for the Jook Savages, celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Psychedelic Shop on Haight Street. Organizers for the Human Be-In saw his work and asked him to design a poster for their January 1967 event. Chet Helms was also impressed by Griffin’s work and asked him to design posters for the Family Dog dance concerts at the Avalon Ballroom, which led Griffin to create concert posters for the Charlatans. In 1967, Griffin, Kelley, Mouse, Victor Moscoso and Wes Wilson teamed as the founders of Berkeley Bonaparte, a company that created and marketed psychedelic posters. Griffin returned to Southern California in 1969, eventually settling in San Clemente.[1]

Griffin adopted Christianity in November 1970, which led to fundamental changes in his lifestyle and in the style and content of his art. His 1973 painting Sail on Sailor for the band Mustard Seed Faith is an example of his fine art painting from this period. His most significant 1970s project was the creation of hundreds of paintings and drawings for The Gospel of John, published by the Christian record label Maranatha! Music. He also produced much album art for Maranatha! during the 1970s and 1980s.[2]

Rick Griffin lost his life shortly after a motorcycle accident on August 15, 1991, in Petaluma, California. He was thrown from his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he collided with a van that suddenly turned left as he attempted to pass it. He was not wearing a helmet and sustained major head injuries. He died three days later, on August 18, in nearby Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, at the age of 47.

Top Stories:
#1 Ian “Poods” Barry of Encinitas is being mourned by the local skateboard community and Brixton, a clothing and accessories accompany, in the wake of his apparently accidental death Thursday morning.

Barry’s body was found at the base of a cliff at at Beacon’s Beach in Leucadia, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

“Despite aggressive intervention, death was pronounced a few hours later,” the office said. “Responding San Diego Sheriff Deputies conducted an investigation and it appeared the decedent fell from the cliff above the beach.”

#2 WHEN bad-ass surfing bank robber Bodhi (played by Patrick Swayze) paddles out to catch a huge wave amid a “50-year storm” at Bells Beach in Victoria at the end of the film Point Break, his FBI-agent nemesis, Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), walks away, muttering, “He’s not coming back.”

The scene is symbolic of what is happening to the Australian surf industry, part of which was born at Torquay, the town adjacent to Bells. A 50-year storm, more intense than the slow-motion waves featured in the movie, is gathering.

The turbulence began on September 17, when news leaked that Rip Curl, the iconic multinational surf company founded in Torquay in 1969 and still mostly owned by surf buddies Brian Singer and Doug Warbrick, had been quietly placed on the market. Their subsequent press release gave only vague reasons for the sale. Requests from Inquirer for an interview were declined.

Three days later, in a reflection of the business world’s appetite for equity in surf labels, one of two offers from venture capitalists for Billabong, the Gold Coast multinational struggling to pay off hundreds of millions of dollars in debt, was withdrawn. The other, from TPG, is half the value of a previous offer made earlier this year.

On the same day, New York law firm Levi & Korsinsky announced it was investigating “compensation to certain executives” at Quiksilver, another Australian-born surf label, now listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

On September 25, the Shareholders Foundation of California announced it, too, would investigate Quiksilver. It reported that while Quiksilver’s net loss increased from $US9.68m in 2010 to $US21.26m last year, several key executives received considerable pay increases. Chairman, president and chief executive Bob McKnight received an increase from “over $US2.91 million in 2010 to over $US10.2 million in 2011″.

To add to the industry’s malaise, Nike and its surf-label subsidiary Hurley announced the next day they were pulling out of the richest surf contest in the world, the US Open at Huntington Beach, California, which they had sponsored for four years.

Ironically, this year the US Open had finally achieved what pro surfing had not done for 30 years. It had been broadcast on a major free-to-air network (NBC in the US) in prime-time.

Into this perfect corporate storm walked 11-times world champion Kelly Slater, to drop the biggest bombshell of all. Asked in a video interview if he was chuffed about the US Open cracking the prime-time Holy Grail, Slater, who looked comfortably prepared for the question, said: “My answer might surprise you. I don’t actually care.”

The video has gone viral across the surfing world, gathering mostly positive responses from surfers jaded by the over-commercialism of their hobby.

“I know what surfing is,” Slater said.

The ASP seems unperturbed by Slater’s disregard for its product. “We respect Kelly’s opinions on all matters regarding professional surfing,” spokesman Dave Prodan tells Inquirer. “The ASP regularly reaches out to Kelly for insight and opinion on a variety of topics.”

Nike’s withdrawal from the US Open does not mean it is withdrawing from surfing. In fact, the parting comment from Nike’s head of action sports, Sandy Bodecker, suggests the company instead has plans to increase its involvement, with or without the ASP: “In the spirit of evolving, we are exploring new opportunities to help elevate the sport beyond the sand to new audiences around the world.”

If that sounds like a slap to the sport’s administrator, the lack of usual courtesies confirms it. “Nike did not inform the ASP of their decision to withdraw from the US Open before today’s announcement,” Prodan told Surfer magazine.

Having established a strong presence in the surf market, and having built a team of sponsored riders that includes the world No 11, Australian Julian Wilson, and 2011 women’s champion Carissa Moore, Nike is conceivably preparing to take on the surf companies on another front: surf equipment.

In 2007, Nike reinvented the boardshort, with its Hurley Phantom, a stretchy, lightweight and quick-drying pair of shorts that overnight stole a huge chunk of the world market and forced existing manufacturers to play catch-up. If Nike does the same with wetsuits, the old surf companies will lose their last exclusive claim to legitimacy.

“Nike and Hurley are definitely giving wetsuits attention,” Hurley’s then marketing manager, Pat O’Connell, told this writer in 2007. “We’ve had some pretty bright people trying to understand just what a wetsuit does. Changing it, however, is a lot of trial and error. It could be a new material or a new cut. It’s a big endeavour.”

Wilson told The Australian earlier this year: “It’s definitely something they are going to get into,” adding that Nike had commissioned wetsuits for him from a Japanese company that uses “the best rubber in the world”, making them thinner and warmer than those sold by the old surf brands.

Independent Californian wetsuit maker Ryan Buell says the storm is only just starting to blow. Buell makes custom team wetsuits for many of the big companies dipping their toe in the sport, and says the real battle for market domination will be between companies much bigger than Rip Curl, Quiksilver or Billabong.

“The surf world has lost a grip on its own industry,” Buell says. “The big dogs are coming.

“You’re only seeing Nike now, but I have an inside track because some people have already contacted me. I think we’re going to see a lot more of adidas, Puma and Oakley.”

Buell says the real prize for being seen as the definitive surf label has little to do with equipment and everything to do with clothes, particularly shoes.

“Shoes bring in so much money,” he says. “How many people actually surf? Not many. How many people pretend to surf? A lot.”

#3 The Western Australian government recently announced a $2 million plan to preemptively kill great white sharks off their coastline. In the past year, the territory has suffered five fatalities as a result of great white attacks.

“These new measures will not only help us to understand the behavior of sharks but also offer beachgoers greater protection and confidence as we head into summer,” said Western Australia’s Premier, Colin Barnett.

The decision to preemptively kill some great whites is a portion of a larger $6.8 million “shark mitigation” plan that would see the use of shark enclosure nets at some high-traffic beaches, increased tagging of sharks, further research into shark repellent, and the purchase of $500,000 of Jet Skis to give to local surf clubs to help spot sharks. The new shark-killing plan goes against current policy dictating that a shark can only be killed after they’ve attacked.

#2 Olympic snowboard champion Shaun White apologized Tuesday for “unwise choices,” saying he got “carried away” after police accused him of pulling a hotel fire alarm that forced guests to evacuate.

White was charged with public intoxication and vandalism and is due in court Oct. 10.

The 26-year-old snowboard star said on his Facebook page he wants to apologize for “any inconvenience it caused my family, friends, business partners, the hotel and their guests. He added that he was “celebrating a happy occasion with a ton of family and friends and got carried away. I’m truly sorry for my poor behavior.”

Police responded to the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel at 2 a.m. Sunday. A drunken man identified as White pulled the fire alarm, forcing an evacuation, police added. An employee also reported seeing White destroy a hotel phone.

White was given the opportunity to sign misdemeanor citations and refused, police said. Baptist Hospital said White was treated there and released Monday before he was arrested and booked by police. A mug shot released by police shows White with a black eye.

Love the show for years now. I’m looking forward to here Maurice back on the show and i would like to ask you to give us,the listeners, an update on Maurice’s health.
I sure hope he’s doing fine because his story last time was very touching. It sure touched me because he was so open about it and about his darker periods. How did he cope to overcome?

Secondly i want to comment on your caller Steve with the idea on more local input and “eyeball” reports. I listen to your show on the other side of the planet with mostly “soupy” waves at best.
But wouldn’t you agree that your international listeners need something else?
Anyway , keep it up and say hi to Maurice from the Netherlands. Rgrds Rens

email #2: Bassy Baldy: Here we were on the East Coast of England, expecting the ’50 year storm’, and it turns out that record low ice levels in the Arctic have screwed up all the computer generated surf forecasting models that NOAA puts out; Wave Watch III — for most of Northern Europe. Gutted! Forecasting aside it makes you wonder how this pattern of warmer seas and retreating ice is going to affect things for all of us as Surfers in the years to come? http://magicseaweed.com/Sea-Ice-Forecast-Glitch-Content/3981/ Anyway, love the show, back to word of mouth and old school pressure charts it is then! Regards,Tris from York UK

FROM A SURF FORECASTING SITE: The main swell model we use all use, the NOAA NWW3, calculates swell generation on the northern boundary of its domain, based on the latest sea ice data obtained from satellite scans. The sudden and rapid change in ice concentration over the last few days revealed an area of ocean for which there exists a significant numerical issue in the mathematics responsible for calculating south bound swell. The results were a seemingly endless series of unfeasibly long period swells propagating south into Northern Europe and beyond. To clarify, it wasn’t that the model was forecasting these swells as likely, BECAUSE of the lack of ice, but that the lack of the ice exposed a bug or error in the system that hadn’t appeared in testing with a broad range of historic conditions.

TOP 5 STORIES:

I survived 9/11 by surfing 15 floors on slab of concrete — Miracle hidden for 11 years by myth, disbelief
and survivor guilt is revealed for first time

Out of the terrible tragedy of 9/11 came a miraculous story of hope — a tale that became the stuff of urban myth.

It was reported that, as the North Tower fell, one man “surfed” down the falling building on a slab of concrete and survived.

The adjoining South Tower collapsed, although Pasquale and his work pals did not realize it had gone.

Only then did they descend the tower down Stairway B, their progress impeded as firemen ran upstairs to get to the crash scene. By 10.28am Pasquale, still clutching his briefcase, had reached the 22nd floor. He said: “Suddenly, I felt the handrail start to shake and heard this loud, loud noise from above.

“I crouched in a corner of the stairwell in a fetal position and covered my face with my hands. Then I felt the wall and base of the floor crack open and give way.

“That’s when I knew that this was it — the entire building was going. I said to myself, ‘My God, I can’t believe this is how I’m gonna die’.

“I thought of my wife, my unborn child, and in those split seconds I was praying, knowing that I was going to die.”

The story was mentioned tentatively by TV reporters — first as fact, then as hearsay, then as fiction.

But now, as the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attack on New York approaches, the story of the 9/11 “surfer” has finally been proved.

British documentary makers have interviewed him and got eye-witness and expert testimony from rescuers, doctors, engineers and scientists.

The result is 9/11: The Miracle Survivor, screened at 10pm on Monday on Channel 4.

The “surfer” survivor, Pasquale Buzzelli, and his wife Louise explain why the full story of “the world’s luckiest man” has taken so long to be told.

Pasquale, 43, told me exclusively: “It was difficult to talk about it. It still is.

“I lost 14 colleagues who were with me when the tower collapsed. They were the last people I saw, then they were gone.

“They were the victims and I was the survivor.

“So I had a sense of guilt. I just wanted to pretend it didn’t happen.”

Louise, also 43, said: “Pasquale did not want the eyes of the world just on him. He had lost many friends and he didn’t want their families to feel hurt by his presence.

“Yet everybody else around him was saying, ‘People need to hear your story. People need to know that there was a miracle that horrible day’. ”

At 8.46 on the morning of September 11, Pasquale was in a lift on his way up the North Tower when the first plane hit it between the 93rd and 99th floors.

The lift stopped on the 44th floor and the doors opened to scenes of panic. But he decided to continue to his office on the 64th floor, where he worked as a structural engineer for the New York Port Authority.

Pasquale was still unaware of the terrorist attack that had trapped hundreds.

But most of his colleagues were already heading down the emergency stairways.

Pasquale called Louise, who was seven months’ pregnant. He said: “I told her, ‘I’m OK, don’t be alarmed, don’t be worried, I’m perfectly fine’.

“And she said, ‘What’s the matter?’ So I said, ‘Just do me a favour, turn on the television and tell me what you see’. ”

Louise added: “I got up, hit the remote and saw the top of the North Tower alight. I said, ‘Oh my God, Pasquale, your building is on fire. They say a plane has hit your building!’ ”

At first, like many, he thought it was an accident.

He said: “That was higher up and, because the air-con and lifts were still working, I felt no sense of danger.” The full horror dawned on him and some of his colleagues when, clustered round a TV, they watched as the second plane exploded into the South Tower.

He said: “It hit at about the same level as we were up there in the sky. Yet we couldn’t see it from our window and we didn’t feel the impact. We could only watch it happening on television.

“It was a very weird feeling, so surreal. And now we knew we could die.”

He made a second call to Louise, who told him: “Why are you still there and why are you calling me? Leave!”

The building shuddered as the adjoining South Tower collapsed, although Pasquale and his work pals did not realize it had gone.

At home, Louise watched in horror as the North Tower her husband was in collapsed. She said: “I knew it was over then. There was just dust and smoke and I couldn’t watch any more.”

Incredibly, though, Pasquale was still alive. As the walls around him crumbled, he began to free-fall. He said: “I’ve never jumped out of a plane but I guess I was experiencing that feeling of surfing down, just riding the air and getting buffeted around, as if I was on a roller coaster.

“Then I saw a bright flash. When I opened my eyes it was three hours later.

“I was staring numbly at blue sky and thought I must be dead, until I felt pain in my leg.”

He was on a ledge of the ruins seven storeys up. He had fallen 15 floors but suffered just a broken leg and a crushed ankle. He was rescued by firefighters.

Pasquale called his wife from hospital, who was at home thinking he was dead.

#1 Donovan Frankenrieter concert tonight 4pm at the Billabong’s Cosmic Creek event today in @Salt Creek on the grassy knoll. FREE Concert!
Have you ever surfed in this event?

BILLABONG International shares have again risen on hopes of a takeover, but continue to trade below the price proposed by private-equity suitors.

Shares in the surf, skate and skiwear group jumped almost 4 per cent to $1.415 yesterday — on top of Thursday’s 7 per cent rise — as the market digested the news that US-based Bain Capital had joined TPG in expressing interest in an acquisition.
BAIN Captial is presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s old employer. Long ago. Apparently hey turn companies around. I think I’d rather have a surfer at the helm of Billabong. I hope htey come out this okay.

#2 The home of the late Andy Irons, the three-time world surfing champion from Kauai, sold earlier this year for $4.3 million.

Larry Wilson II of La Jolla, Calif., is listed as the buyer of the property, which is assessed at $4.33 million, according to property tax records.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom fee-simple 2,610-square-foot home on 16,408 square feet of land was built in 2003. It originally listed for $4.8 million and was on the market since September 2010 before selling in April, so it was listed for more than 500 days.

The Asian-inspired two-story home at 5494 Weke Road sits on Hanalei Bay, according to the listing.

#3 FROM ESPN: The argument could be made that the hotbed of American surfing is San Clemente, Calif. I’m may be biased, my mail gets delivered here, but the relatively quiet town has produced more game-changers and world tour surfers Jim Hogan, Matt Archbold, Christian and Nathan Fletcher, Dino and Kolohe Andino, the brothers Gudauskas, the Beschens, Chris Ward, and the list could go on and on. So ESPN Surfing tapped current rat-packer Ian Crane to see what’s going on around town these days.

I’ve been listening since the “in the lineup” days and haven’t missed an episode.
I like some of your ideas about the ASP, I have a couple of ideas of my own. Keep the two tiers and for WCT events -
Each event consists of the top 15 surfers from the previous year, next 10 surfers from the qualifying tour at the time, with the rest of the spots filled by any previous winners of the event, the top two from the junior world tour and then sponsors/ASP wildcards, trials winners and in Hawaii locals. equaling 32.
If there are too many surfers then run a quick extra round for everyone other than the top 25.
My reasoning. The gap between the top 15 or 20 and the next run, even 10 to 15 is a big gap. There are too many people on the tour who never get out of round three.
At those iconic events like Pipe or Bells or Fiji most people would rather watch Machado or Sunny Garcia or Occy than the bottom rungs of the WCT. People will say do you really want a 40 + Tom Carroll at Pipe ? but I would prefer him to some slop groveller from the QS.
Golf and tennis basically allow this type of thing and it is a huge draw card. You’re not going to get PT coming back but who wouldn’t want to see Slater at selected events for years to come or the Hopgood’s in Fiji for another five years, regardless of whether they are retired or fall out of the ratings ?
What do you guys think ? Dave Western Oz.

Some good ideas DaveO; Ten current QS surfers slide into the event. That changes rather consistently. adds new blood. The legendary pros thing… hmmm, not so sure. I like the idea of past winners being invited if they’re in top surfing form. Machodo could certainly make a run at PIPE again. There is sort of small list of guys that are worthy. They have to be under 45 years old. to be a serious contender. One problem is that past champions are getting old quickly and Kelly Slater is the only big draw of old guys and he’s still on tour. When he retires there will need to be an open slot invite for him at most events I think? He’s a bona fide “reason to watch”. Who else, under 45, would you be excited to watch at say Teahupoo or Lowers or Pipe? Machado, Dorian, ?? Who else?? At JBay… Occy? He’s too old? Next year would it be T KNox? or ????

The swell hype? The fact is that the forecasters for Surfline and for Solspot live in OC. Do they hype the living shiite out of it? Do they get paid to hype it? They get paid to be optimistic. And frankly, it is six-feet up in Orange County…bigger in some places. But not in the majority of SD county. If it wasn’t for the NW windswell, it would have bee 1′-3′ yesterday, at least south of Carlsbad.

My experience with the dawn patrol yesterday.
