BASSY)
1) YOU SIT RANKED #10 IN THE WORLD WITH TWO EVENTS REMAINING…how would your rate your 2012 season thus far? Are you satisfied?
2) Your score line through this year is solid…although, you have two 13th place finishes and a 25th, do you ever look back on those events and think about how you may have done things differently?

BALDY)
3) Santa Cruz is coming up this week, if ever there was a spot for upsets it is Steamer Lane…a tricky lineup; are you familiar with Steamer Lane? Have you surfed there?
4) Jason “RatBoy” Collins is a dangerous wildcard, do you think the wildcards worry the top ranked surfers or are they just another competitor?

BASSY)
5) Is there a particular surfer on tour that you enjoy going up against in a heat?
6) Gabriel Medina seems to have a bit of a cocky disposition, not a bad thing for a competitor, but do you know him well, is he aloof or do you find him to be pretty cool guy?

BALDY)
7) When you draw an aerialist such as Gabe or Julian Wilson, does it change they way you approach a heat? As opposed to say a surfer such as say Adam Melling or Taylor Knox?
8) What is your pre-heat routine like? Do you go through a regular routine for each heat?

BASSY)
9) Surfer magazine’s Shea Lopez left you off his Fantasy Surfer team, does that kind of thing motivate or inspire you?
10) What does inspire you? How do you motivate for heats?

BALDY)
11) The NEW DEAL for the ASP Tour, what is the overall vibe amongst tour surfers?
12) Who do you think would make a good ASP commissioner?

TOP 5 STORIES:
#1 STORM: Hurricane Sandy is moving to north of the Bahamas, as the western fringe brushes Florida with high surf and gusty winds. It will continue along the coast of the Carolinas this weekend. All signs point to an extraordinary combination of meteorological ingredients coming together to produce a historic storm in the N.E. states with the peak being Monday night and Tuesday. No matter what the official designation – hurricane, tropical storm, or ‘post-tropical’ – Sandy should be taken seriously.

#2 WILDCARD AND TRAILISTS FOR COLD WATER CLASSIC Santa Cruz County surfer Jason “Ratboy” Collins was has been granted one of two wild-card slots into the O’Neill Coldwater Classic. The second wild card will go to the surfer who wins the Local Trials, scheduled for 8 a.m. next Wednesday at Steamer Lane. A dozen surfers, not all from Santa Cruz, will vie for that other wildcard. The Trials invitees include 2008 Coldwater Classic winner Nat Young, who is on the verge of making the World Tour cut, and 2002 winner Adam Replogle.

#3 GREAT WHITE SHARK KILLS SURFER — AGAIN. On Tuesday October 23, 2012 Francisco Javier Solorio, Jr., 39, was surfing with a companion near Surf Beach located at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Lompoc, California. It was 11:50 AM and they were sitting upright on their surfboards about 100 yards from shore waiting for the next set. His companion had been speaking with Solorio and turned to look toward the beach. While looking forward, out of his periphery, he saw a large shark come up out of the water, pulling Solorio off his board, dragging him underwater.

The companion started moving toward his friend when Solorio suddenly emerged and grabbed his board with both hands. He asked for help and lapsed into unconsciousness. His companion pulled him to shore and one of two surfers in the parking lot called 911. Paramedics attempted to administer CPR but were unsuccessful. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Solorio sustained a massive bite to his left mid-torso, extending down to the upper left thigh.

The bottom of his board was struck by the shark’s lower jaw, leaving identifiable tooth impressions. ‘Interspace measurements’ of the tooth impressions in the surfboard and victim are consistent with the dental pattern of a Great White Shark 15 – 16 feet in length. Officials closed the beaches in the area for 72 hours.

The publication “Shark Attacks of the Twentieth Century” authenticated 108 unprovoked shark attacks from the Pacific Coast between 1900 and 1999. The Great White Shark, Carcharodon carcharias, was implicated in 94 (87%) of the 108 confirmed attacks with an annual average from 1950 – 1999 of slightly more than 2 shark attacks per year. There have been 71 unprovoked shark attacks confirmed since 2000, which includes 5 fatalities and 7 incidents year-to-date for 2012. This is three times the Twentieth Century annual average of 2 attacks per year.

The Great White Shark was either positively identified or highly suspect in 62 (87%) of the 71 attacks, with 34 (48%) of the 71 occurring during the three month period August (10), September (9), and October (15). There have been 179 authenticated unprovoked shark attacks reported from the Pacific Coast of North America from 1900 to October 24, 2012. The Great White Shark was positively identified or highly suspect in 156 (87%) of the 179 cases. There were 8 fatal shark attacks confirmed during the 20th Century with 5 fatal attacks reported from 2000 to 2011. The 13 fatal attacks represent 7% of the 179 total cases.

Victim activity for the 71 shark attacks reported since 2000 are distributed in the following ocean user groups; surfers 48 (68%) of the documented attacks, with 5 swimmers (8%), 7 kayakers (10%), 4 divers (6%), 4 paddle boarders (6%), 1 windsurfer (1%), and 1 boogie boarder (1%).

#4 Portugal offers FREE holidays for disappointed surfers — Until December surfers who visit Portugal and don’t find good waves can return for free, courtesy of the Portuguese tourism board. Riding on the popularity of the Rip Curl Pro tournament, which ended last Friday and attracted thousands of people to Peniche, Turismo de Portugal has said it will offer free return trips to tourists who, “for whatever mysterious reason” don’t find suitable waves on Portuguese beaches

The offer is open to any tourist who visits Portugal to surf but fails to find waves measuring more than half a metre for three consecutive days, on any of the 28 pre-selected beaches. Applicants must have stayed at least four days in this country and the lack of decent waves has to be documented, with either photos or videos.

Anyone who can prove they didn’t catch a 50-centimetre wave for three days running will be offered a free flight back to Portugal and have their accommodation paid in the same hotel where they stayed first time round (up to a limit of €750.) The prize is limited to the first 20 applicants who fulfil all criteria, until December.

Details of the ‘Our deal: no waves, come back for free’ campaign are available on the ‘Riding the Portuguese Waves’ website (www.portuguese waves.com), which also includes more information on the Portuguese surf scene, such as best spots, recommended hotels, etc.

IN OTHER SHARK ATTACK NEWS: SUNDAY OCT. 28, 2012 — The beaches surrounding Makena Landing Beach Park were closed off Saturday afternoon following a shark attack on a 51-year-old woman from California.

The victim was approximately 20 yards offshore when she was attacked by a shark estimated to be between 10 and 12 feet long, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

#5 TSUNAMI WARNING DOWNGRADED TO ADVISORY: The first of what could be several waves generated by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast of western Canada have arrived in Hawaii, with officials saying the highest waves so far are about 5 feet and no damage has been reported.

Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie says a tsunami warning that spurred coastal evacuations statewide is being downgraded to a tsunami advisory, but beaches and harbors will remain closed.

Abercrombie says Hawaii was lucky to avoid more severe surges after the powerful earthquake. Gerard Fryer of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center told The Associated Press Saturday night the first waves hitting shore are smaller than expected.

Adam Wright SolSpot.com: Surf Forecast for next week.

Barlo w/ a Rick Griffin documentary film update.

Julian v Gabe

Was Julian Wilson over-scored?

Yes, Julian Wilson was over-scored.

It was the greatest thing to happen to pro surfing since last week (ZoSea Media ASP take over).

I love it.

As fan of sport, you should too.

It was a subjective call. Judging is hard. Mistakes happen. It is not the first time the judges have over-scored a ride. It won’t be the last. It was, however, the best ‘over-score’ in the history of the ASP.

It really sets up a great rivalry for our sport: Julian vs. Gabriel. Regular foot vs. Goofy-foot. Aussie vs. Brazo. Blonde hair vs. Dark Hair. White hat vs Black hat. Nike v.s Rip Curl. New industry vs. Old industry. Yes! Thank you!

If you look at degrees of difficulty and you acknowledge that those big air reverses that Gabe completes are ridiculous, than I would say that yes, Julian was over scored. I emphasize “completes” because Gabe’s air game is punctuated by the smoothest of transitions. These smooth transitions sets Gabriel Medina apart from most.

Now, granted, Gabe makes it look easy. For him it is easy, but the judges shouldn’t be jaded by Gabriel’s expertise. It doesn’t mean he should be under-scored.

Watch the rides yourself using the Heat Analyzer.

Julian’s last wave play-by-play went something like this: a crumbly tube (a short tube) he busted through the foam ball to claim it then off the bottom to minor top turn then through the flat section to an average tail waft jam which ended the ride. This is a ride you will see daily at your local beach or on the amateur level. Not an 8.55. And just an average score when you compare it to Gabriel’s massive air reverse.

The real problem was Julian’s first scoring wave of the heat. Julian first scoring wave was WAAAYY over scored. If you, in comparison, look at Julian’s first wave v Gabe’s second wave you’ll see some big issues (both were tubes rides. That’s it, so you can compare them).

Julian’s tube was a solid wave, he pulled in cleanly, it instantly crumbled on him. He exited thru washy doggy door. Entire ride maybe lasted four seconds – max. Gabe’s tube was longer and cleaner. He connected two separate sections, exited cleanly, and also finished the wave with a vertical hit that lacked speed but it was a final move. Julian’s wave scored higher. This is where the judge’s over score took place.

Julian vs Gabriel. Regular foot vs Goofy-foot. Aussie vs Brazo. Blonde hair vs Dark Hair. White hat vs Black hat.

Surf fans are pissed. The haternet erupted. I’m stoked. You should be too. This sets up years of interesting heats between two new guard surf heroes.

Gabe left the stage when Julian was announced.

Was that a bad move? Doesn’t number two runner-up usually hang out while the awards presentation takes place?

They don’t like each other. Hurray! Sport!

I must start off by saying that every time a contest is on I get absolutely nothing done for the duration of the contest. However, the best surfing in the best waves needs to be complimented with the best/most interesting guys/gals in the booth. For example, the waves in Fiji were unreal but the commentators made the contest nearly unwatchable. Below is my list of who should be included in said staff.

Dave Stansfield: the best voice in surfing
Joe Turpel: the next best voice in surfing once he is freed from billabongs bankrupt grasps

Top 5 Stories of the week

#1 ASP pro surfing shake-up
After a series of meetings in France, the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) announced yesterday that they have entered into a partnership with ZoSea Media, founded by Paul Speaker (former president of Time Inc. Studios and a board member at Quiksilver) and Terry Hardy (Kelly Slater’s manager and backer of the original “rebel tour” in 2009.)
According to the press release, the agreement is “designed to enhance the organizational structure of the sport as well as the direction of professional surfing in the coming years. This measure enjoys the comprehensive support of surfers, events, staff and ASP Board Members.”
Paul Speaker has held high-level posts with the NFL, the Entertainment Industry and previous sat on the Board at Quiksilver. His focus is now firmly on enhancing the ASP. Terry Hardy has represented high-profile athletes such as Kelly Slater and Tony Hawk and brings with him a wealth of knowledge in regards to surfing and entertainment industry mechanisms
*The new ASP organization will create an Office of the Commissioner, tasked with overseeing all technical aspects of the sport: judging, event locations, structures, schedules, etc. This Office of the Commissioner will ensure that a recognized surfing skill set always maintains an authority within the sport. The Commissioner will be voted upon by the surfers themselves.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE NEW DEAL FROM THE HATERNET:

#1 Alan Boyd 10/08/2012 03:42 AM
There is only six guys on tour I would even tune in to watch. The gap between the top six guys or so and everybody else is HUGE. The ASP wants/needs more money. They will do whatever it takes.

#2 If this ZoSea is so renound why can’t we find any information regarding them and very limited info on Speaker? Not on bloomberg or the internet

#3 TC 10/08/2012 07:52 AM
There’s a reason Nike pulled out of the US OPEN. Do you think a global company like that doesn’t know how to project the success of fringe sports when they sponsor athletes from the NBA and NFL to Supercross and Cycling? A real study on webcast views, NBC Signature Series tune ins, and every other market driven metric was conducted. Until there are wave pools across the world, the only fans of the sport will be participants. No fans = No $$. Men lie, Women lie, but numbers don’t lie!

#5 Chris Kelly 10/07/2012 10:59 AM * PREMIUM MEMBER – Real Name
The webcast format has been really amazing for the past 2 years. The commentary, surprisingly, has been excellent and some of the interviews behind the scenes in France were very well done. Super stoked on Pottz, Peter Mel, and all else involved. I think change is always good and having a common vision for the tour I hope will benefit it.

Who will be the new commissioner?
Barton Lynch? Luke Egan? KS? KEIRAN PERROW?

KS n the beach interview yesterday (Oct 12, 2012, after his heat) during Rip Curl Pro. He said, basically, paraphrasing: “I only have to deal with John John for three more vents, these other guys have to deal wtih JJF the rest of their careers.”

Hmmm? Read between the lines, Why would KS say only three more events?

#2 Surfer remembered 10 years after Bali bombing
Sitting on a board next to her son Dylan and surrounded by about 50 surfers Saturday morning, Mona Webster released the last remaining ashes of her husband Steve into the warm water just north of the Newport pier.

Ten years have passed since Newport surfer Steve Webster was killed in a bombing that hit a nightclub in Bali on Oct. 12, 2002, a terrorist attack that made national headlines after 202 people from around the world died. On Saturday, family and friends gathered to remember Webster, a surfer nicknamed “Insta-Bro” for his ability to make friends with everyone he met.

Webster had gone on a surf trip to Bali for his 40th birthday.

Three bombers convicted in the attack – Imam Samudra, Amrozi bin Nurhasyim and his brother Mukhlas – were executed by firing squad in 2008. The person who made the bomb was sentenced to 20 years in jail.

I’ve been listening since the “in the lineup” days and haven’t missed an episode.
I like some of your ideas about the ASP, I have a couple of ideas of my own. Keep the two tiers and for WCT events -
Each event consists of the top 15 surfers from the previous year, next 10 surfers from the qualifying tour at the time, with the rest of the spots filled by any previous winners of the event, the top two from the junior world tour and then sponsors/ASP wildcards, trials winners and in Hawaii locals. equaling 32.
If there are too many surfers then run a quick extra round for everyone other than the top 25.
My reasoning. The gap between the top 15 or 20 and the next run, even 10 to 15 is a big gap. There are too many people on the tour who never get out of round three.
At those iconic events like Pipe or Bells or Fiji most people would rather watch Machado or Sunny Garcia or Occy than the bottom rungs of the WCT. People will say do you really want a 40 + Tom Carroll at Pipe ? but I would prefer him to some slop groveller from the QS.
Golf and tennis basically allow this type of thing and it is a huge draw card. You’re not going to get PT coming back but who wouldn’t want to see Slater at selected events for years to come or the Hopgood’s in Fiji for another five years, regardless of whether they are retired or fall out of the ratings ?
What do you guys think ? Dave Western Oz.

Some good ideas DaveO; Ten current QS surfers slide into the event. That changes rather consistently. adds new blood. The legendary pros thing… hmmm, not so sure. I like the idea of past winners being invited if they’re in top surfing form. Machodo could certainly make a run at PIPE again. There is sort of small list of guys that are worthy. They have to be under 45 years old. to be a serious contender. One problem is that past champions are getting old quickly and Kelly Slater is the only big draw of old guys and he’s still on tour. When he retires there will need to be an open slot invite for him at most events I think? He’s a bona fide “reason to watch”. Who else, under 45, would you be excited to watch at say Teahupoo or Lowers or Pipe? Machado, Dorian, ?? Who else?? At JBay… Occy? He’s too old? Next year would it be T KNox? or ????

The swell hype? The fact is that the forecasters for Surfline and for Solspot live in OC. Do they hype the living shiite out of it? Do they get paid to hype it? They get paid to be optimistic. And frankly, it is six-feet up in Orange County…bigger in some places. But not in the majority of SD county. If it wasn’t for the NW windswell, it would have bee 1′-3′ yesterday, at least south of Carlsbad.

ADAM WRIGHT SOLSPOT.COM WITH TODAY’S FORECAST:

EMAIL, TWEETS, WHAT’S UP: EMAIL #1– Scott/Jeff,

Can you please get Tim Bessell back on the show? It seemed that do to time constraints the interview stopped right before the main course was served. You guys started to touch on the production of boards and how imports are effecting local shapers but ran out of time. Scott it seemed you started to highlight the disconnection between shapers and consumers specifically first time buyers; I want hear more of Tim’s thoughts on the subject. It seemed that Tim could not understand why anyone would purchase a Wavestorm where you were playing the uneducated newbie who thinks a Wavestorm is a low risk board because it is cheap, safe and durable.
I personally ride all hand shaped board and have purchased two custom boards shaped by Dave Vernor in the last two years. The show is great, it makes my Monday morning commute bearable.–Dave from SF

email #2: Scott & Jeff, Really enjoyed the recent show with Ryan S. & Micah B. new team USA surf coaches

Growing up surfing NSSA, & WSA, any local South Bay contest, I was a surf frothing grom. It was a time where NSSA National Team members were looked upon as gods… The industry has changed quite a bit, and the income groms can pull in is crazy. 1-Why is it the surfing world fails to recognize that Hawaii became a state in August 1959. If we want to win, why not use all our resources? 3-Why are these kids & their sponsors ONLY stoked to be on the Team USA when it’s convenient? If someone is on the team, then they need to be ALL IN. Why aren’t their parents, sponsors & personal coaches not trying to steering/guiding them toward this great honor of representing their country.
How can we ever hope to have surfing possibly in the Olympics with the current structure? Chance Barber Manhattan Beach, now living in Chicago.

TOP 5 STORIES:

#1: LOCAL SAND REPLENISHMENT PROJECT TO BEGIN IN SD COUNTY ; DREDGE ON ITS WAYS:

A massive dredge will be off the coast of S Diego dumping massive amounts of sand on our beaches
its starts in early Sept; should last until November
Imperial beach, Oceanside, Cardiff, Solana Beach slated.

The dredge that will be used to give many North County beaches a massive influx of fresh sand this fall has finally finished its East Coast project and is coming west.
the dredge —- a 315-foot-long vessel named Liberty Island –arrive Sept. 2 in Imperial Beach, Tucker added.
Oceanside stands to get nearly 300,000 cubic yards of sand through the project —- the most of any North County city. Cardiff State Beach, which is proposed to get just under 90,000 cubic yards, will receive the lowest amount.
The equipment’s arrival date was postponed several times this summer. That worried some North County city officials, who said the fresh sand from the dredge might not last long if it was placed on the beach just before the start of the winter storm season.
The schedule calls for the dredge to be in Imperial Beach until early October, when it relocates to Oceanside.
After Oceanside, the dredge will be off the coast of Encinitas. In early November, it’s expected to move to Solana Beach, and it’s scheduled to wrap up work in south Carlsbad at the end of November.
The dredge has the ability to suck sand off the ocean floor from a depth of up to 108 feet, the company’s web site states. It has the capacity to hold up to 6,540 cubic yards of sand.
After filling up with sand, the dredge motors over to a floating pipe system that connects to the coast and pumps the sand onto beaches.
Tucker said that this dredge has double the capacity of the one that the region used for its last big sand replenishment project in 2001.
That’s going to allow work to proceed much more quickly, she said. The 2001 project lasted six to seven months, and this one will be done in three, she told the Encinitas City Council last week.

#2 Catch Baldy – what is it all about?
The concept is Catch Baldy on a whatever craft you want, but it must be hand-powered, you must stay within the course;
The course will be set-up by Jeff Baldwin;
He will be paddling a secret weapon; who ever catches Baldy wins a brand new inflatable SUP from BoardWorks Surf;

#3 Tahiti – Billabong Pro Tahiti has to run today;
They’ve received no help from the ocean. no surf;

Surfline, official forecasters for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, are calling for a new SW swell starting pulse up o; will fill in further and be strongest on Sunday. A larger and solid south swell will build rapidly over the afternoon and continue Monday. Strong East trades prevail through the weekend, shifting more ENE/NE on Monday and easing.

#4 Tubesteak Tracy RIP: Terry “Tubesteak” Tracy, known to friends and family as the Kahuna of Malibu, died peacefully at his home in San Clemente Wednesday at 77.
He lived in the shack at Malibu for two years
He named Kathy Kohner : Gidget ; a mash up the “girl” and “midget”
He let Gidget ride one of his boards in exchange for a peanut butter sandwich
Miki Dora was the surfer who stuck the nickname Tubesteak on Tracy
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Tracy “left his Aunt Marion’s saving and loan business on Spring Street – he couldn’t picture living his life in a suit – for a simpler way, surf sun, sand,” the family wrote in his obituary. As he told the Register in 2002, he took to sleeping on the beach at Malibu in the mid 1950s and built a wooden shack that included palm fronds and thatched bamboo mat. He lived in it for two years, holding court there as many of the best surfers of the day would surf at Malibu. A girl appeared one day at the shack – which eventually was bulldozed – and she wanted to surf, Tracy said. The girl reminded Tracy of a short girl he’d once met at a party, named Gidget. He said he told this newcomer to the shack that he’d loan her a surfboard in return for a peanut butter sandwich she was carrying. He took to calling her Gidget.
She’d never surfed before, Tracy said, and her name was Kathy Kohner. After her father, screenwriter Frederick Kohner, heard some of his daughter’s stories about what she saw at the beach, he wrote a book about it. The rest is history. Actor Cliff Robertson portrayed Tracy’s character, the great “Kahoona,” in the movie.
A San Clemente resident since 1988, Tracy told the Register that he surfed until 1980 when a large bunion developed on his left foot. He continued to hold court on the beach at San Onofre. In 2003 the city of San Clemente honored him with other local surf icons during the city’s 75th anniversary celebration. Today, street banners along South El Camino Real salute Tracy and other local surf notables. “He was ‘the Man’ at Malibu,” wrote Register columnist and surf icon Corky Carroll in 2008. Carroll, as a kid, knew Tracy at Malibu. “He had style,” Carroll wrote, “and that was both in and out of the water.” There were theories on the origin of the nickname “Tubesteak,” Carroll wrote. The columnist figured it was because Tracy’s colorful personality and his style on the waves made him “king of the hotdoggers” at Malibu.
“Tube told all kinds of stories about his name,” his wife Phyllis said this week, “but in reality Miki Dora hung ‘Tubesteak’ on him when they were young kids working at Velzy’s shop at the Manhattan Beach Pier. It stuck for a lifetime.”
In 2008 Tubesteak and Phyllis celebrated 50 years of marriage. Tube is survived by Phyllis and seven children – Pam Guinn (John), Patrick, Michael, Jonathan (Mindy), Moe, Jennifer, Jocelyn Graham (Mark) and eight grandchildren.

#5

The average surfer in the survey was male, in his 30s, well-educated and employed full time, defying the stereotype of a surfer as young, uneducated and jobless.

To prove there is intrinsic value in a wave, the report produced last August tabulates the number of surfers in the country and how much money they shell out for the privilege of riding the waves. After surveying more than 5,000 surfers, it was concluded that about 3.3 million people in the country surf 108 times a year, drive an average of 10 miles per session and contribute at least $2 billion to the U.S. economy. The median surfer these days is 34 and pulls in more than $75,000 a year, according to Nelsen’s study.

TOP 5 STORIES — SURFING NEWS: Mavericks Contest and Big Wave World Tour Join Forces

Early Winter Swells Anticipated for Mavericks Invitational; Organizers Announce Partnership with the Big Wave World Tour

(Half Moon Bay, Calif.) – Looking ahead to an El Niño winter and the anticipation of big waves early in the season, the organizers of the Mavericks Invitational big wave surf contest are opening the contest season on November 1, 2012.

Following the approval of the permit by the San Mateo County Harbor District last week, the organizers kicked into high gear the planning for this year’s famed big wave surfing contest off Pillar Point in Half Moon Bay. The contest waiting period is officially November 1, 2012, through March 31, 2013.

“It looks like we’re headed for an early winter, and we want to take advantage of the big swells in November,” said Mavericks Pioneer Jeff Clark, part of a group of business and community leaders organizing the event. “The surfers are ready, the community is ready, and we are stoked to make this amazing event happen this year.”

Mavericks Invitational organizers are also announcing a partnership with the Big Wave World Tour. Founded by famed big wave rider and shaper, Gary Linden, the Big Wave World Tour (BWWT), is an international surfing phenomenon that organizes the best big wave riders in the first-ever big wave surfing league. The tour showcases the world’s top surfers and local standouts as they battle extreme conditions, and each other, in a season long battle to become the next Big Wave World Champion. The tour includes events in Chile, Peru, Mexico, and now in California.

“Big wave surfing and Mavericks have become synonymous, and a competition there a dream come true,” said Linden, who has served as head judge for previous contests at Mavericks. “Being part of the event is an extreme honor, personally and for the Big Wave World Tour.”

The association with BWWT allows those surfers who are part of the tour to use their performance at Mavericks as part of their overall scoring for the season. The list of competitors for this year’s Mavericks Invitational will not change from last season, when a lackluster winter dashed hopes for a contest.

“The competitors will still earn their way through dedication to surfing Mavericks, proving their mettle at Mavericks, and being voted into the event by their peers,” said Clark. “Gary Linden has experience at Mavericks, making it easy to integrate their judging system and water patrol into our event, while keeping true to the unique nature of Mavericks.”

Mavericks Invitational is the world’s premier, high adrenaline, big wave surfing event. This one-day, invitation-only surfing competition is held at the legendary Mavericks surf break located ½ mile offshore at Pillar Point Harbor, just 20 minutes south of San Francisco. The 24 most daring big-wave surfers in the world will attempt to tame the massive swells on the biggest and best day of the 2012 winter season. SHOW NOTES:

An EMAIL – #1 Yeah guy! I’m a northern beaches local and last week I had the privilege of taking my daughter to Manly to watch some of the AusOpen. I think even though Manly is a pretty average wave, it’s one of the best spots that they could have held the event. Manly has the right infrastructure (compared to Avalon further north where I live which has better waves, but couldn’t handle all the people!) It’s great to see contests like this and I think there’s a place for these kind of events alongside the dream tour style contests. Personally even though I’m a big surf contest fan, I didn’t watch that much of the surfing, we were more interested in the skateboarding. Anyway great show guys, I’ve been a regular listener for years!

BTW, it would be great if you could get Tom Curren on the show (like that’s ever going to happen!). — Ziggy

#2 Hi Scott and Jeff, Greetings from Cornwall, UK, where the waves are cold and non-existent right now. Love the show – the podcasts keep me fired up for a surf while driving to work!

I have to zone in on Scott’s comments from a couple weeks back about a need for Pipe ‘SuperBowl’ finale on the ASP tour, where you recommended that no matter how strongly a surfer performed throughout the year, that could be overturned at Pipe. To a limey, that sounds alot like manufacturing the competition for media / dramatic purposes, which surely would only further weaken surfing’s legitimacy as a competitive sport?

We already have a subjective and questionable judging criteria with multiple controversies each year. If you condense all of that and then bring it all down to one event, I just think you have an even less realistic interpretation of ‘the best surfer’ – and that’s if its 12ft pipe – imagine if it were 4ft windblown backdoor – surely it would be a traveshamockery to have the title decided in those conditions?

Also, as amazing as pipe can be, I believe several of the other spots on tour can be right up there, and the performances at those venues need to be fully counted as part of the whole: keep up the good work All the best Paul

A POLL:
Should the Billabong Pipeline Masters be the penultimate event i.e SUPERBOWL of the ASP. i.e No WORLD TITLE being decided prior to the Pipe Masters Event. It all comes down to this event?

Private equity group employs different strategy by going straight to BoDirectors ; BoD has a fidicuiary responsibility to ALL shareholders, not just Mr Merchant; many nervous fund managers like the price that private equity is offering.

Some analysts suggesting that selling off NIXON was a mistake. NIXON was a hugely profitable business for Billabong. Makes Billabong business weaker from take-over perspective.

Pressure mounts. We’ll see what happens.

Can the umbrella brand stay relevant, focus on its core value?

Brand specialists contend that with plenty of nurture a youth brand can have its use-by date extended.

”A lot of companies had their moment in the limelight only to wake up and find themselves out of touch,” the Ogilvy Public Relations director, Mike Beckerleg, says.

”Apple came back from the brink and Puma staged a huge retro throw-back. The same goes for the Swiss watch industry.”

Billabong Pro JBay downgraded toa 6 star evetn ; off the world tour ; many fans disappointed that Billabong didn’t get rid of Brazil event rather than JBay.

#2 Fukushima tsunami debirs field heading to the USA – Debris from the devastating tsunami that hit Japan on March 11 has turned up exactly where scientists predicted it would after months of floating across the Pacific Ocean. Finding and confirming where the debris ended up gives them a better idea of where it’s headed next.

Millions of tons of debris – pieces of fishing vessels to TV sets

Scientists estimate the debris will wash up on the Hawaiian Islands in two years and the U.S. West Coast in three.

#3 Three weeks ago; The 2012 Quiksilver Rincon Classic went off last weekend. Three-time World Champ Tom Curren, former World Tour standouts Bobby Martinez and Dane Reynolds, Parker Coffin, Adam Virs, 2011 champ Mike McCabe and a host of other local professionals were on hand for the annual contest. This is a locals only event;

The win was Reynolds’s first contest victory in over a decade. Receiving his 1st place award at a ceremony Sunday night at the Santa Maritime Museum, Reynolds, sheepish yet laughing, explained, “This is the first contest I’ve won since 2001. That’s a long time for a professional surfer.”

TCurren beat Dane Reynolds in a early round heat, Tom Curren rode a Tomo 4′ 11′ and absolutely killed it with his amazing style.

#4 Fellow surfers, including superstar Kelly Slater, took to Twitter and other social media after Chicago surfer Rex flodstroms Slater tweeted, “Surfing is not a crime” and told the Chicago Sun Times, “It makes no sense. … It sounds like a police state.”

Flodstrom appeared in a Chicago court Thursday, with a dozen surfing supporters,

The judge agreed to drop charges against Flodstrom if he completed 20 hours of community service before March 19. But that did not seem to satisfy the surfers, who cited Flodstrom’s arrest as an example of overprotective government.

Mitch McNeil of the Surfrider Foundation told ABC News, “It’s not in the police playbook for them to be policing the surfing community.”

#5 “Of Men and Mavericks” star Gerard Butler has checked out of rehab after developing dependence on pain medication his publicists say was prescribed after a surf accident that occurred while filming on the coast in December.

News reports say a healthy Butler left the Betty Ford Center early Friday morning. The reports quote Gerard’s publicist saying the Scottish actor’s problems began in 2006, during physically demanding filming of “300.” On Dec. 18, 2011, during his final days of filming, Butler was held under for two waves, leading the actor to exacerbate previous injuries. Butler’s manager told online news site TMZ that the actor began struggling with pain management. Rather than developing a reliance on prescription drugs, he checked into the rehabilitation clinic about three weeks ago, TMZ reports.

Surf Talk Radio: Great White Sharks, Australian Seasons Revs Up, Laird Hamilton Interview

by on Feb.12, 2012, under This Weeks Show

Surf Talk Radio Show Notes

Top 5 Stories – Feb. 12, 2012 — RIP Whitney Houston

#1 Story – Great White Shark spotted at Blacks – a 12-footer, on Big Wednesday, February 8; only a few guys out; pumping 10′ Blacks and chunky, powerful, mean Blacks; a friend of a friend, on his 9′ 4″ gun, was way outside at the Canyon peak with just two other surfers ; big set came in, two other guys caught the waves and my buddy was left alone out there; that is when he saw a 12′ GWS, clear as day, only 10 yards away, in the top of a smaller wave. It glided directly at him, sort of surfing the wave; then the shark disappeared.

Some other guys that are fishermen up in Dana Point have said that a pod of Killer Whales has regularly been feeding on the seals up there. They see them often.
Insane surf last week with stellar conditions and a meaty swell.

I took a major beating on Wednesday.

By the way, I surfed by myself on Wednesday morning in some thick 8′ waves, no one around, at a spot that usually has 25 + guys on it. I think the rain and size of the swell had people confused trying to figure out where to go.

Mavericks had a few epic days this week; pristine conditions; all the big wave chargers Skin-dog, Healey, Twiggy, Longs, Pete Mel, ET AL. Skin-dog blogged about Healey getting pitted on the left from a backdoor angle. Some great photos from Doug Acton that I saw online. Wow. Dorian apparently got the best waves, one tube he pulls into… the guy is mental good.

So are we surfed out? My question to you is… Has this been a good winter? How would you rate, on a scale of 1-10 10 being epic.

We have short memories; the last month month and half has been good to very good, but Nov. & Dec. were horrible. I give it a 6 out of 10.

#2 Australian Open of Surfing presented by Hurley and Billabong – After the phenomenal success of the US Open Of Surfing over the last few years Hurley and Billabong have teamed up to bring a similar event down under. Set to be one of the biggest events on the Australian surfing calendar, featuring an ASP 6-Star Men’s World Tour event, an ASP 6-Star Women’s World Tour event and Men’s and Women’s ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series events. a world-class skate bowl featuring the world’s best skateboarders and two live music concerts on the Channel [V] music stage. It’s all happening from the 11th to 19th February, 2012 on Manly Beach, Sydney … and it’s all free… a WEBCAST of course.

A lot of pro surfing happening as the World Tour begins to to start its 21012 campaign.

Brazil, Burleigh, manly, then Quiksilver Snapper Rocks WT event with all eyes on Slater Gabe Medina, Kolohe and Jon Jon.

#3 Kelly Slater turned 40 years old yesterday.

#4 Laird Interview on ESPN:

On the tow-in scene at Jaws: “Right now it’s a circus for Red Bull and these other companies to try and get people to go out and do things for them that will get them press, and it kind of takes away from the essence of what it’s all about. ”

On the paddle-in resurgence at Jaws: “The paddling aspect, well, I think it’ll be interesting to see somebody actually make a wave at Jaws when it’s breaking properly. You know, that wave is more designed for towing. It’s a little bit of a waste to see these guys out there trying to paddle and then so many waves going by unridden. I guess maybe they’re trying to prove a point that you can do it. But is it the most functional way to really ride that wave, and are you getting all you can out of it? You’re not. So for me, I look at it kind of like a gimmick, in the sense of, “OK, yeah, can I crash on a giant one?” Part of it has to do with the sponsors. A lot of it’s stimulated by these bigger surf companies pushing their guys to be different. The problem with tow-in surfing is that you can tow people into waves who aren’t really great surfers. So at least with paddling, you have to be a good surfer. And that’s what I do like. But at the end of it, there’s good waves for paddling and there’s good waves for towing, and you might be paddling into a wave or two at Peahi, but you’re never going to match the power of that wave. ”

Internet forums are lighting up with responses to Laird – see below some comments:
1) “I’d like to see him stand in front of Shane Dorian, Danillo Couto, Greg Long or Mark Healey and tell them directly to their faces that they are paddling in at Jaws for the money.”

2) “In ‘Step Into Liquid’ didn’t Laird say man couldn’t paddle fast enough to catch these waves? Now it’s happening and Laird is 47 and he can’t hang, so he calls it a gimmick.”

3) “Guys are discounting the high performance aspect of the drop. Making a crazy airdrop on a 50 ft. wave is way more high performance than doing a mid-face carve you had 10 seconds to set up for. The wave is suited for gnarly drops as much as it is for swooping tow carves.”

4) “I think a bunch of Armchair Quarterback/internet tough guys calling out Laird is a joke. The guy was frigging dangling from a Helicopter attached to a tow board 100 feet from the water — this morning. Above 30-foot Outer Reef waves. The guy is incredible.”

Brodie Carr is Spicoli
Brodie Carr, former ASP President, ultimate Spicoli moment under his watch.

The article states that last year was chaotic and that professional surfing in its current form is being questioned by SOME of the professionals, SOME in the media, and SOME of the enthusiasts, and SOME of the daily partakers of the ocean and waves.

* she points towards this years drug testing implementation as transparent effort to push surfing further into the mainstream away from Spicoli image
* she points to NIKE as a great example of this push into the mainstream
* then surfing is embarrassed by the ASP’s miscalculation of points announcing Slater champ prematurely – a Spicoli moment of the highest degree
* she highlights dissenting voices Bobby Martinez and Skin-dog Collins

* she then points to former SURFING mag editors Travis Ferre and Photog Nathan Lawrence joining forces with Kai Neville to create a new magazine
* apparently “Bummer Magazine” is positioning itself to exist apart from corporate influence.
* surfing has always been more rebel than frat boy; is there room for both?

Master craftsman, legend shaper, big wave warrior and director of the Big Wave World Tour Gary Linden.

by on Feb.05, 2012, under This Weeks Show

DTL — Surf talk radio with Jeff Baldwin and Scott Bass it is Feb 5 Super Bowl Sunday, 2012

We are live every Sunday morning here in San Diego on XTRA SPORTS 1360AM and broadcast around the world via iTunes. — our show needs a sponsor so be advised.
In-studio today Master craftsman, legend shaper, big wave warrior and director of the Big wave world tour Gary Linden.

Adam Wright. Solspot.com surf report –

An OPINION – THE ASP’s Super Bowl is the Pipe Masters. It should be our final crescendo. Not an afterthought of great surfing at a great spot. No ASP World Title should EVER BE DETERMINED BEFORE THE PIPE MASTERS– period. The waiting period and the field should be extended to include PIPE EXPERTS. the Pipe Masters should be SURFING’S BEST SHOW ON EARTH culminating in a World Champion — each and every year. This is a simple concept. If the surf industry and the Hawaiian powers that be, all of them: VANS, Triple Crown, the HUI, Billabong, the City and County of Honolulu, and the North Shore community can’t get on the same page, they have truly FAILED. They have failed pro surfing, they have failed surfing fans, and they have failed as the so-called ‘keepers” of the sport. All future ASP World Titles should and could BE DETERMINED AT THE PIPE MASTERS — OUR SUPERBOWL — end of story.

GARY LINDEN- Big wave world tour. Can you quickly explain the tour how many events from when to when.

AN obvious big challenge is waiting on Mother Nature to throw big enough waves your way.
Logistics of getting the surfers together.
Nelscott Reef is extended to March.

How do you crown a champion…? Very important for a TOUR to crown a champion every year.

Ever see a time when the ASP gets involved with Big Wave Tour?

Who is the marketing arm? Seems you are on to something, but that a big time sponsor needs to get involved. I could see SWATCH or NIKE or an INSURANCE company like Geico?

What about less emphasis on spots and more on crowning a champion? Don’t rely on having five stops to crown a champ; if you only get one event off, well that’s it. The winner is the Champ that year, if you get all five events pulled off, then great, but don’t rely on it.

The internet makes for a lot of chatter from “internet tough guys” or “arm chair quarterbacks”. Garrett McNamara’s self described 90-foot wave caught some flak but surprisingly not from the big wave pros or the surf media elites. They either turned away from it or validated the 90-foot wave claim.
What say you Gary Linden, 90 foot wave or not?

How do you feel about all the press that it received.

TOP 5 Stories
#1 Story – Volcom Pipe Pro – The greatest nail-biter final ever. With 30 seconds remaining John John steals the championship from JO Brien. Wow!
JOB surfed incredible. Switch-foot was mind blowing. He’s on another level… from even John John in that respect.

Dave Wassle is darn good in the broadcast booth as an analyst. So is Richard Woolcott. Too many in the booth stepping on each others comments and NOT listening. Biggest problem is the NON-professionalism that these WEBCASTS manifest. To a trained broadcaster, these still remain amateur. Commentators do not listen to each other. Granted, 4 days of talking is very difficult. Very little actual surf action takes place.

#2 Story – Kenny ‘SkinDog’ Collins snaps on NOAA officials:

http://chasingmonsters.com/news/the-pulse/item/70-skin-dog-snaps-on-noaa-officials

In one respect, I can relate to ‘SkinDog’ . He’s frustrated. The ban seems misguided. ‘SkinDog’ saved Jacob Trette’s life using a ski. PWC’s have assisted other surfers out there. Massive fishing trawlers out there everyday. But it seems like a low-profile would have been better approach. Just get on the ski without a word a go surfing. Why all the hysteria? Doesn’t help the surfers cause, in my opinion.

Here’s how NOAA lawyers work: For a citation to hold up we must show that 1) we first educated them 2) then we can Cite them 3) #1 will assure that #2 holds up in court.

It only helps that NOAA and the Judge have public video of an aggressive, dismissive, and abusive Mr. Collins. However, it can argued that Mr. Collins was never “educated”, he wouldn’t let the NOAA official speak. So you can’t cite him. *Although in the video he claims he’s already been educated about the PWC ban. So…
At the same time though, SkinDog didn’t use, pardon the bureaucratic term, “best practices”, He let his emotions get the better of him. He didn’t come off looking to smooth. For sure next time the feds will come prepared with citation books, taser guns, German Shepherds; etc.

#3 SUPS at SUNSET SUPS: what is your take on stand-ups in big waves and in general?

SUP World Tour – They are doing it at SUNSET Beach

SUPMAG: Are you worried about the stigma with stand-up in the surfing world?
JOB: I know guys get eggy when I show up on a stand-up at Pipe. I’m just trying to have a good time. If people are mad at me for having fun I’m not worried about that. It’s all about having fun and enjoying yourself and I get that satisfaction from stand-up.

Not okay to have fun at others expense. We simply ask that you “Do unto others as you have them do unto you”

#4

#5 Chris Beresford of San Diego dominated the Open Division final at the Kneeboard Surfing USA Championships at Huntington Beach. Beresford attacked the head-high waves on the south side of the pier with an impressive display of stylish full-rail surfing and big moves.
