The Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection – May 11, 2013 at the Orange County Fairgrounds

The theme is “California Gold” and the Surfing Heritage (SH) is focusing on just that, boards and memorabilia with a California flair from the ’20s through the ’70s. We’ve already coalesced a solid selection of “Gold’ from various sellers and are actively searching for more. We’re anticipating between 50 prime vintage surfboards for the live auction and at least 40 items including surfboards for the silent auction.

Randy Rarick, a member of the Surfing Heritage Auction Advisory Committee, and a great friend of the Surfing Heritage, has lent his auction expertise to the Surfing Heritage and will also serve as the emcee of this gala.

Please put the Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection (May 11, 2013) on your radar!

NEXT WEEK SHOW: IZZY AND JOSHUAH PASKOWITZ WILL BE IN-STUDIO SO WE WILL TALK ALL THINGS PASKOWITZ!

TOP 5 STORIES
#1 KEN SKINDOG COLLINS TAKES ON THE DIRTY BEACHES OF SANTA CRUZ

started as his disgust to / at finding filth along the beaches of the Westside / West Cliff,
    eventually led him to finding massive quantities of used hypodermic needles;
which led him to the creek which flows through Natural Bridges park,
    which led him to thousands of pounds of filth, trash and homeless encampments;
which led him to city hall where he and other concerned citizens demanded change, demanded clean beaches, demanded the best for Santa Cruz, not worst.
Lowest common denominator, the drug addict, is being served; not the working, tax paying citizen. Not the Chamber of Commerce. Not the families.
    I applaud his can-do approach
Just like he charges big waves, determined, not backing down he is charging this issue head on

RatBoy gets involved too! http://www.ksbw.com/news/central-california/santa-cruz/Surfer-Ratboy-speaks-out-on-Santa-Cruz-needle-controversy/-/5738976/18333670/-/up06xgz/-/index.html

#2 Is the ozone layer on the road to recovery?
Satellites show that the recent ozone hole over Antarctica is the smallest seen in the past decade. Long-term observations also reveal that Earth’s ozone has been strengthening following international agreements to protect this vital layer of the atmosphere.
According to the ozone sensor on Europe’s MetOp weather satellite, the hole over Antarctica in 2012 was the smallest in the last 10 years. The instrument continues the long-term monitoring of atmospheric ozone started by its predecessors on the ERS-2 and Envisat satellites.

#3 Surf Contest results:
Jamie Sterling wins Nelscott Reef contest in oregon in 20 -25 – 30 feet of surf. Stop #3 of the BWWT.

John John Florence owned the Volcom Pipe Pro in really good pipe ; smaller for the final day; Josh Kerr, Chris Ward also standouts.

Break Burleigh Pro 4 star WQS in OZ won by Owen Wright

Segment brought to you by :
100 Wave Challenge – taking place this year in Mission Beach San Diego.

#4 GMAC at Nazere rides 103.5 feet of wave breaks his own world record
a) How did the come up with 100 feet on the mark, are they sure it wasn’t 102 feet or 104 feet? Seems like a red flag, IRS always red flags rounded numbers and so am I. For the purpose of this show the wave was 103.5 feet.
b) Is he the most famous surfer in the world? Anderson Cooper ; all over European TV,
c) He has achieved the infamous 100 foot mark, now what. It was radical, but it didn’t leave more of an impression as his 90 or 100 foot wave at Nazare last year. A big wave is a big wave is a big wave.
d) Who are the most famous surfers in the world right now: Kelly, Gmac, Dorian, Dane Reynolds, Tom Curren? Greg Noll? Miki Dora??? Duke K? Gabriel Medina?

#5 OAKLEY PRO AT KERAMAS BALI ADDED TO THE WCT IN 2013 THIS YEAR.
a) Really good wave Trestles rip-ability, but with tubes.
b) WCT starts in March 2. Ends Dec 20. Ten events.

SEGMENT 1: Segment Sponsor Quiksilver Waterman Collection is presenting next years’ Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection which takes place May 11, 2013 in the brand new state-of-the-art building at the OC Fairgrounds called The HANGAR. TONS OF SURF THE LAST THREE DAYS.

emails/news/notes:
hi Scott & Jeff — about the ‘FRUSTRATION’ turn and Dane Reynolds’ status as a world tour surfer,
I think he is an artist. A performance artist if you will, but one that shines and creates as he goes along.
Maybe even beyond the term free surfer, more a free-spirit surfer.
His level of performance depending more on his mind-set and inspiration than the buzzer at the beginning of the heat.

But DANE’S ‘frustration’ turn will not be bigger than TOM Carrolls snap. Because that was picture perfect – poster material , glassy with that beautiful board. Highly marketable. I call it perfect technique and balls out. Dane was more a freakshow . I call it art in progress . you shouldn’t want to shackle an artist in a world tour obligated circus. It wears off their shiny feathers we all love to see.
Have a good one — Rens

top 5 stories:
#1 RED BULL Peahi Paddle In
Twenty-one intrepid big wave paddle-in surfers from around the world have been invited to take on the menacing wave giant known as Jaws for the inaugural RED BULL JAWS, Paddle at Pe’ahi. With no assistance from motorized personal watercraft to catch these monstrous waves, the athletes competing in RED BULL JAWS will drop-in on one ideal day during the period of December 7, 2012, to March 15, 2013. The ideal conditions for the event to be called “on” are wave face heights of between 30 and 50 feet, from a NNW swell direction with light winds. An official ceremony on December 7 will open the event period. To watch the event trailer and learn more about the contest, go to www.redbullusa.com/jaws.

TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) Will this contest ever happen? Or is this just a chance to make some marketing noise without much lifting?
b) Red Bull doesn’t fool around. But either does mother nature. How many times has it been 30 feet+ with NNW direction and light wind?
c) Red Bull has already upped the game, we’re talking about it, as a fan I’m excited about it, so Red Bull has already more or less won … but… from an execution standpoint, WILL THIS EVENT EVER HAPPEN? How many years do you give Red Bull before the surf world gives an overall fail grade — from execution standpoint? One year, two years, three years? Or, no matter what happens, they’ve already PASSED just by trying to run this event?
d) What about the politics and logistics of this? Three big wave contests, all with the same waiting period. DOES Ian Walsh get left off of some invite lists because RED BULL didn’t invite certain people? NBC TV and Big Wave events in general must be troubling for the ASP, no? Or is this all sugar coated with a ‘growing the pond” mentality?
e) As of today, Shane Dorian is not on the list of surfers in the event?

#2 PIPELINE EVENT WILL BE THE MOST WATCHED EVENT IN SURFING HISTORY ; SLATER’S SWAN SONG ; PARKO VS THE WORLD
TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) No doubt, the entire surfing world will be tuning-in for this; I hope the ASP broadcast crew is prepared for MASSIVE WORLD WIDE VIEWING AUEDIENCE — web servers are fast & plentiful.
b) How much pressure is Parko feeling, on a scale of 1-10? Is he even on the North Shore yet?
c) Does Slater feel a touch more pressure knowing this is it- one last try at at World Title?

PARKO’s ASP World Title scenarios
As Parkinson is the current rankings leader on the ASP WCT, the following ASP World Title scenarios will be based on his potential finishes at Pipeline.

If Parkinson finishes 13th, 9th or 5th at the Billabong Pipe Masters:

Slater needs a 5th or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title. (*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.)

If Parkinson finishes Equal 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:

Slater needs a 3rd or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title. (*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.)

If Parkinson finishes 2nd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:

Slater needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
Fanning cannot win the 2012 ASP World Title.

If Parkinson wins the Billabong Pipe Masters, he will take the 2012 ASP World Title.

The Billabong Pipe Masters, the third jewel of the Vans Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing, will be run from December 8 – 20, 2012.
2012 ASP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR RESULTS:

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Taj Burrow (AUS)
Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Mick Fanning (AUS)
Billabong Rio Pro: John John Florence (HAW)
Volcom Fiji Pro: Kelly Slater (USA)
Billabong Pro Tahiti: Mick Fanning (AUS)
Hurley Pro at Trestles: Kelly Slater (USA)
Quiksilver Pro France: Kelly Slater (USA)
Rip Curl Pro Portugal: Julian Wilson (AUS)
O’Neill Coldwater Classic: Taj Burrow (AUS)
    Billabong Pipe Masters: TBD

#3 NIKE SELF-IMPOSED EXORCISM FROM SURFING
Nike pulling out of surfing completely ; entire team now rides for HURLEY; simply a name change and all fiscal energy that NIKE was putting in is transferred to HURLEY marketing. Really?
TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) The new ASP ZoSea sales team (is there one?) must be disappointed.
B) Does HURLEY really get all the fiscal resources from NIKE surfing, or do they have to start cutting team members? Who really moves/sells board shorts for HURLEY? In North America it’s got to be Machado. In Europe? Machado? Does Kolohe Andino move board shorts? Does Carissa Moore sell anything? Believe it or not, these considerations flow through the minds and spreadsheets of somebody at HURLEY.
c) Where does John John fit in all this?
D) This is tough situation, because of all the surf industry companies, it is my perception that HURLEY, and I mean Bob Hurley, has the most compassion, is one of the boys if you will. It would be problematic for him to let someone go. But… it’s a business.
E) If they keep everyone they have one hell of a surf team: Ace Buchan, Rob Machado, Brett Simpson, Carissa Moore, Julian Wilson, Kolohe Andino, Evan Geislman, Tim Curran, Mitch Crews, Yadin Nichols, Conner Coffin, Nat Young, Aamion Goodwin, Coco Nogales, Evan Valiere, Rizal, Laura Enever, Koa Smith, Michel Bourez, Mickey Detemple.

#4 Defending ASP world champ Kelly Slater has been called to testify in a Southern California courtroom over a trademark dispute between his clothing brand, VSTR, and New York-based apparel maker World Marketing.

At issue is whether Slater’s VSTR — which stands for Visiting, Surfing, Traveling, Responsibility — violates a trademark that World Marketing has held on its Visitor apparel line since 1998.

Under the Quiksilver umbrella, Slater launched VSTR in January. In March, World Marketing sent Quiksilver a cease-and-desist letter, to which the apparel giant responded in court, claiming no infringement. The complaint explains that VSTR is pronounced by saying each letter separately, rather than saying “visitor.”

However, during the brand’s rollout earlier this year, VSTR was widely reported as an acronym, pronounced “visitor.” Earlier this week, a representative who picked up the phone at the brand’s customer service number listed at its website also referred to the brand as “visitor.”

World Marketing has countersued, and on November 14 served the 11-time world champ a subpoena. Slater reportedly responded by saying he’s not available to testify at the moment, as he’s too busy “preparing full-time” for the last stop on the ASP’s 2012 Championship Tour. Yet again, Slater’s a contender for the title, breathing down the neck of tour frontrunner Joel Parkinson.

“I can’t really talk about the case,” World Marketing VP Neil Mossberg told a New York paper earlier this month. “I will say this: I know we are not as famous as Kelly Slater, and I know our stock is not traded like Quiksilver’s. I also know we will not be wiped out without a fight.”

“We have no comment on this,” Fresh and Clean Media’s Shelby Meade, who heads up Slater’s publicity team, told ESPN.com. The Billabong Pipe Masters, held on Hawaii’s North Shore, marks the tenth and final event of this season’s ASP World Tour. The window opens December 8.

TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) Does World Marketing group have a valid legal position here?
b) Do you see this having any effect on Kelly Slater as he prepares for Pipeline Masters?

Hi Bassy n Baldy,

Best wishes from Australia, love the show, I listen every week. my question is …… have you or Jeff had much exposure to the Von Sol boards and are they a fun replacement for a summer fish ?? Do they rip or is it just more of the same ?? Hope to hear back, sorry to disturb, please keep up the great work, best wishes to Jeff !!

PS It’s so refreshing to listen to a radio show by hosts who are really tuned into what we are as surfers and what we find interesting and important, it’s amazing how similar our thoughts are even though we are on the opposite side of the planet. It just goes to show that surfers are the same the world over – we all know that surfing is such a great lifestyle and your show really celebrates it, well done !!! Kind regards, Peter

TOP 5 STORIES OF THE WEEK POWERED BY SURFERS VILLAGE:

#1 THE TURN
DANE REYNOLDS busts an acrobatic, mind bending turn, if you can call it that, during a rather ho hum heat at Haleiwa and immediately remings us all of what we are missing.
1) THE TURN: Biggest wave of the heat; head high wave. full speed, full rail, dual arm layback, fin bust, nose pick to half-rotate to whitewater chaos to recovery. Maybe that’s it. It wasn’t as clean as it could’ve (or should’ve) been? (Watch it above)

Will THE TURN, DR’s move at Haleiwa, hold a place in history like Tom Carroll’s The Snap at Pipeline? or no? email us: surftalksandiego AT gmail DOT com

2)The judging:
The wave was scored a 7.3; Dorian and Machado both would’ve given the wave a 10 or high 9. Do you trust their judgment? How can you not trust the judgement of Dorian and Machado? Machado was rightfully calling out the judges. Right or wrong, this is what color commentators need to do — be honest and forthcoming with their opinions. John McEnroe/Johnny Miller. This, as much as the Dane Reynolds turn – THE TURN, progresses the sport.

What if nobody in the commentating box had said anything? We, the audience, would be spewing.

What we were told during the webcast is that the judges can only see the replay in real time speed. They can watch the super slo-mo, but are not allowed to have super slo-mo sway their opinion/judement.

WTF? We’ll give you the evidence, but you are not allowed to use it. That seems a bit ass-backwards, no?

#2 REEF Hawaiian Pro

    SLATER ADVANCE

#3 I went surfing and saw a dinosaur
A group of surfers in Santa Cruz County, Calif. stumbled upon a surprise Thursday. Sticking out of a rocky outcrop that is usually covered by water, even at low tide, was a giant set of fossilized vertebrae.
One of the dumbfounded surfers snapped a photo of the six to eight feet of bones, which were sticking out from a rock formation at Pleasure Point, a world-renowned surfing destination (home to the surf legend Jack O’Neill) that is one of only four dedicated “World Surfing Reserves.”
The surfer, under the name Donkahones, posted his photo of the fossils to Reddit, the Internet message board, with the explanation that the group could see the bones because of an unusually low tide. The post was titled “So I went surfing and saw a dinosaur.”
Experts disagreed.
“It is not a dinosaur,” Gary Griggs, director of the Institute of Marine Sciences at the nearby University of California, Santa Cruz, told ABCnews.com. “The vertebrae are in what is called the Purisima formation, which is from the Pliocene, so they’re three to five million years old. Which is relatively young. This is from way after the dinosaurs.”
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2012/11/surfers-find-giant-fossilized-back-bones/

#4 Nat Young heard he officially made the ASP World Tour on Friday, joining the ranks to the top 34 surfers in the world. But Young, 21, wasn’t celebrating. And he won’t until an ASP official delivers the news to him directly. Young, ranked No. 20 in the world, has reason for skepticism. Last year he thought he had done everything necessary to claim a World Tour spot, only to see it yanked away.

EMAILS COMMENTS:
EMAIL #1 Bassy & Baldy –

Long time listener, listening for many years while living in Taiwan and now in Hong Kong (yes we have waves so I get my fill of stoke).

I just want to add to last week’s comments on Great White Sharks. 2 weeks ago Taiwan local fisherman netted a 6 meter / 1,700 kg great white just off of my old local break called Cho Shui – about an hour from Taipei on the N. East Coast. Check out the attached link with picture and article.

http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?id=20121101000022&cid=1103

Keep up the great work. You guys are truly global by spreading the stoke.

Cheers, Scottay

EMAIL #2:
Scott n Jeff… Great interview with Josh Kerr.. and I would have to agree with caller from the UK regarding GABE Medina’s lack of professionalism in Portugal after he lost… Hard to root for someone who cries when he loses.

FYI: the shark attacks on Maui occurred at 2 different locations! One was at Kanaha, a SUPer on the N. shore and the attack on the CA lady was at Makena Landing in S. Maui.

I think Kelly will get #12 this year and retire.. but I am rooting for PARKO to take it!!

#2 BS RUMOR MILL / PARKING LOT CHATTER
THIS IS ALL PROBABLY BS. BUT WE DID HEAR THIS IN THE PARKING LOT, WHICH IS A BIT MORE RELIABLE THAN THE HATERNET. HERE GOES… DEEP BREATHE … Hearing that Volcom is going after John John Florence… $35 million over a period of time and includes a Mom John salary, and a house at Pipeline. Again — non-factual — hearsay — from the mouth of a well-placed industry insider. This info is placed here so you, the listener, can live vicariously through John John. That is all. This can’t be true. Total BS… or… can it? Over 10 years? Sure…. $3.5M a year. No prob.

HURRICANE SANDY BEFORE THE DESTRUCTION

#5 O’NEILL COLDWATER CLASSIC
In a lead-changing battle with 11-time surfing world champion Kelly Slater, Santa Cruz native Nat Young clawed his way to victory in his Round 1 heat at the Coldwater Classic at Steamer Lane on Thursday.

Clean, shoulder-high waves were sparse in Young’s first heat in an Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour event. But he said he stuck to his game plan of waiting for the best waves, as Slater and San Clemente 19-year-old Kolohe Andino scrapped on the inside.

“I was curious to see what his game plan was,” Young said of Slater.

While Andino and Slater racked up scores that never earned more than 5.67 out of 10, Young said he then changed tack and paddled closer to Middle Peak.

He caught a wave that allowed him to throw powerful backhand snaps, and took the lead with 11 minutes, 10 seconds in the 30-minute heat.

“We’re going to have to call him Snap Young,” world No. 30 Matt Wilkinson quipped from the competitors’ area.

Slater answered back and took the lead.

With 7:30 remaining, Young nailed another series of backhand lip bashes and beat Slater 12.17 to 10.00.

“It was pretty slow for me, really,” Slater said after the heat. “Any heat where you come in with a 5 as your best score is not a good heat.”

Because Round 1 is a non-elimination round. Young continues to Round 3 and Slater will surf in the first heat of Round 2 against another Santa Cruz local, Jason “Ratboy” Collins.

O’NEILL COLDWATER CLASSIC ROUND 2 MATCH-UPS:
Heat 1: Kelly Slater (USA) vs. Jason Collins (USA)
Heat 2: Mick Fanning (AUS) vs. Jadson Andre (BRA)
Heat 3: John John Florence (HAW) vs. Matt Wilkinson (AUS)

Heat 5: Julian Wilson (AUS) vs. Raoni Monteiro (BRA)
Heat 6: Owen Wright (AUS) vs. Tiago Pires (PRT)
Heat 7: Josh Kerr (AUS) vs. Damien Hobgood (USA)
Heat 8: Jeremy Flores (FRA) vs. Kolohe Andino (USA)
Heat 9: Adrian Buchan (AUS) vs. Kieren Perrow (AUS)
Heat 10: C.J. Hobgood (USA) vs. Heitor Alves (BRA)
Heat 11: Miguel Pupo (BRA) vs. Alejo Muniz (BRA)
Heat 12: Bede Durbidge (AUS) vs. Brett Simpson (USA)

#6 Hawaii Doesn’t Vote when the surf is up

FROM CNN.COM If voter turnout stayed exactly as it did in 2008 (impossible, I know, but hear me out) then 11,000-some new voters would push the Aloha State out of last place for voter participation. Watch out West Virginia, Hawaii is coming for you. If 11,466 more people voted in the presidential election in Hawaii, then the state’s turnout rate would hit 50% of the eligible population, based on numbers compiled by George Mason University’s Michael McDonald on a site called the United States Election Project. That would push Hawaii past West Virginia, which had a 49.9% turnout.

ONE REASON: The surf: Before I left for Hawaii, a state representative, Angus McKelvey, gave one very Hawaii-specific reason for the state’s low turnout: surf. When the surf’s up, he said, people won’t go to the polls. The theory is a little wacky, of course, but even if it’s true, there will be better surf in Hawaii on Monday than Tuesday, Election Day, said Gary Kewley, “chief surfing officer” of the Surf News Network. “Most people only surf on average for an hour and a half to 2 1/2 hours,” he told me by phone. “That leaves plenty of time to go to the voting booth.” Waves on Monday are expected to crest at 15 feet. Tuesday, they’ll still be big, but more in the 8-foot range. By the way, Kewley votes.

#7 ANDY IRONS REMEMBERED: It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since the surf community received the devastating news that it had lost one of its own, talented surf legend Andy Irons. Many people via instagram, tweets, Facebook etc etc remembered Irons fondly.

#8 PUNCH THE SHARK ; BREATHE ; REPEAT

It wasn’t until surfer Scott Stephens punched the shark on the side of its head that it relented and let go, seconds after biting him and pulling him underwater off the North Jetty.

When the shark bit, Stephens was paddling on his stomach. It immediately pulled him underwater.

“I opened my eyes underwater and punched the shark on the side of the head until it released me,” Stephens said. “I saw a lot of blood.”

The shark severed Stephens’ leash but he was able to get back on his board and — with the assistance of a wave — paddle back to shore.

Stephens said he always knew the risks of going in the ocean, and didn’t blame the shark for the attack.

“You’re entering into their home every time you go surfing,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for him.”

He estimated that the shark was four feet from nose to dorsal fin and thinks it was a juvenile great white shark.

The attack wouldn’t keep him out of the water, Stephens said.

“I will be very scared, I’m sure,” he said. “I’ll definitely have some mental barriers to get through. I think it’ll be worth it.”

Adam Wright SolSpot.com: Surf Forecast for next week.

Barlo w/ a Rick Griffin documentary film update.

Julian v Gabe

Was Julian Wilson over-scored?

Yes, Julian Wilson was over-scored.

It was the greatest thing to happen to pro surfing since last week (ZoSea Media ASP take over).

I love it.

As fan of sport, you should too.

It was a subjective call. Judging is hard. Mistakes happen. It is not the first time the judges have over-scored a ride. It won’t be the last. It was, however, the best ‘over-score’ in the history of the ASP.

It really sets up a great rivalry for our sport: Julian vs. Gabriel. Regular foot vs. Goofy-foot. Aussie vs. Brazo. Blonde hair vs. Dark Hair. White hat vs Black hat. Nike v.s Rip Curl. New industry vs. Old industry. Yes! Thank you!

If you look at degrees of difficulty and you acknowledge that those big air reverses that Gabe completes are ridiculous, than I would say that yes, Julian was over scored. I emphasize “completes” because Gabe’s air game is punctuated by the smoothest of transitions. These smooth transitions sets Gabriel Medina apart from most.

Now, granted, Gabe makes it look easy. For him it is easy, but the judges shouldn’t be jaded by Gabriel’s expertise. It doesn’t mean he should be under-scored.

Watch the rides yourself using the Heat Analyzer.

Julian’s last wave play-by-play went something like this: a crumbly tube (a short tube) he busted through the foam ball to claim it then off the bottom to minor top turn then through the flat section to an average tail waft jam which ended the ride. This is a ride you will see daily at your local beach or on the amateur level. Not an 8.55. And just an average score when you compare it to Gabriel’s massive air reverse.

The real problem was Julian’s first scoring wave of the heat. Julian first scoring wave was WAAAYY over scored. If you, in comparison, look at Julian’s first wave v Gabe’s second wave you’ll see some big issues (both were tubes rides. That’s it, so you can compare them).

Julian’s tube was a solid wave, he pulled in cleanly, it instantly crumbled on him. He exited thru washy doggy door. Entire ride maybe lasted four seconds – max. Gabe’s tube was longer and cleaner. He connected two separate sections, exited cleanly, and also finished the wave with a vertical hit that lacked speed but it was a final move. Julian’s wave scored higher. This is where the judge’s over score took place.

Julian vs Gabriel. Regular foot vs Goofy-foot. Aussie vs Brazo. Blonde hair vs Dark Hair. White hat vs Black hat.

Surf fans are pissed. The haternet erupted. I’m stoked. You should be too. This sets up years of interesting heats between two new guard surf heroes.

Gabe left the stage when Julian was announced.

Was that a bad move? Doesn’t number two runner-up usually hang out while the awards presentation takes place?

They don’t like each other. Hurray! Sport!

#1 SUP er attacked by shark for SUPPER. Maui beach closed tiger shark jawed up ona SUP rider paddling from here to there.
The 55-year-old paddle board and surfboard shaper said he was standing on his board waiting for waves to come in and “all of a sudden (I get) knocked off my board. I didn’t see anything.”
“I landed on the back of the shark,” he said.
He said the shark had a hold of his board and would not let go of it, so Peterson hit the shark with his paddle as he was in the water.

#1 ASP pro surfing shake-up
After a series of meetings in France, the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) announced yesterday that they have entered into a partnership with ZoSea Media, founded by Paul Speaker (former president of Time Inc. Studios and a board member at Quiksilver) and Terry Hardy (Kelly Slater’s manager and backer of the original “rebel tour” in 2009.)
According to the press release, the agreement is “designed to enhance the organizational structure of the sport as well as the direction of professional surfing in the coming years. This measure enjoys the comprehensive support of surfers, events, staff and ASP Board Members.”
Paul Speaker has held high-level posts with the NFL, the Entertainment Industry and previous sat on the Board at Quiksilver. His focus is now firmly on enhancing the ASP. Terry Hardy has represented high-profile athletes such as Kelly Slater and Tony Hawk and brings with him a wealth of knowledge in regards to surfing and entertainment industry mechanisms
*The new ASP organization will create an Office of the Commissioner, tasked with overseeing all technical aspects of the sport: judging, event locations, structures, schedules, etc. This Office of the Commissioner will ensure that a recognized surfing skill set always maintains an authority within the sport. The Commissioner will be voted upon by the surfers themselves.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE NEW DEAL FROM THE HATERNET:

#1 Alan Boyd 10/08/2012 03:42 AM
There is only six guys on tour I would even tune in to watch. The gap between the top six guys or so and everybody else is HUGE. The ASP wants/needs more money. They will do whatever it takes.

#2 If this ZoSea is so renound why can’t we find any information regarding them and very limited info on Speaker? Not on bloomberg or the internet

There’s a reason Nike pulled out of the US OPEN. Do you think a global company like that doesn’t know how to project the success of fringe sports when they sponsor athletes from the NBA and NFL to Supercross and Cycling? A real study on webcast views, NBC Signature Series tune ins, and every other market driven metric was conducted. Until there are wave pools across the world, the only fans of the sport will be participants. No fans = No $$. Men lie, Women lie, but numbers don’t lie!

The webcast format has been really amazing for the past 2 years. The commentary, surprisingly, has been excellent and some of the interviews behind the scenes in France were very well done. Super stoked on Pottz, Peter Mel, and all else involved. I think change is always good and having a common vision for the tour I hope will benefit it.

Who will be the new commissioner?
Barton Lynch? Luke Egan? KS? KEIRAN PERROW?

KS n the beach interview yesterday (Oct 12, 2012, after his heat) during Rip Curl Pro. He said, basically, paraphrasing: “I only have to deal with John John for three more vents, these other guys have to deal wtih JJF the rest of their careers.”

Hmmm? Read between the lines, Why would KS say only three more events?

#2 Surfer remembered 10 years after Bali bombing
Sitting on a board next to her son Dylan and surrounded by about 50 surfers Saturday morning, Mona Webster released the last remaining ashes of her husband Steve into the warm water just north of the Newport pier.

Ten years have passed since Newport surfer Steve Webster was killed in a bombing that hit a nightclub in Bali on Oct. 12, 2002, a terrorist attack that made national headlines after 202 people from around the world died. On Saturday, family and friends gathered to remember Webster, a surfer nicknamed “Insta-Bro” for his ability to make friends with everyone he met.

Webster had gone on a surf trip to Bali for his 40th birthday.

Three bombers convicted in the attack – Imam Samudra, Amrozi bin Nurhasyim and his brother Mukhlas – were executed by firing squad in 2008. The person who made the bomb was sentenced to 20 years in jail.

“I know what surfing is,” Kelly Slater said. “Surfers know what surfing is. I actually don’t care if surfing becomes the biggest thing in the world or disappears and there is no pro surfing.

“Basically our sport is run by the sponsors. Because of that, it becomes like a marketing project for these companies. Imagine Nike and adidas and Puma and all these companies coming together to run soccer or the NBA. It’s not going to happen, and it shouldn’t happen. But that’s what we have in surfing.”

Today we talk about THE RICK GRIFFIN MOVIE PROJECT WITH STEVE BARILOTTI.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/49615095/griffin-the-film

FROM WIKIPEDIA (code for : could be bs, but it’s on the internet , so it must be true?) Richard Alden Griffin (June 18, 1944 – August 18, 1991) was an American artist and one of the leading designers of psychedelic posters in the 1960s. As a contributor to the underground comix movement, his work appeared regularly in Zap Comix. Griffin was closely identified with the Grateful Dead, designing some of their best known posters and record jackets. His work within the surfing subculture included both film posters and his comic strip, Murphy.

Griffin was born near Palos Verdes amidst the surfing culture of southern California. Griffin biographer Tim Stephenson notes:

His father was an engineer and amateur archaeologist and as a boy Rick accompanied him on digs in the Southwest. It was during this time that Rick was exposed to the Native American and ghost town artifacts that were to influence his later work. Rick was taught to surf by Randy Nauert at the age of 14 at Torrance Beach. The pair had met at Alexander Flemming Jr. High, and were to become lifelong friends, Rick producing much of the artwork for Randy’s future band, the Challengers.[1]

While attending Nathaniel Narbonne High School in the Harbor City area of Los Angeles, he produced numerous surfer drawings, which led to his surfing comic strip, “Murphy” for Surfer magazine in 1961, with Griffin’s character featured on the front cover the following year. In 1964, he left Surfer and briefly attended Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts), where he met his future wife, artist Ida Pfefferle. That same year, he hung out with the group of artists and musicians known as the Jook Savages.

He traveled with Ida on a Mexican surfing trip and later planned a move to San Francisco after seeing the psychedelic rock posters designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley. In late 1966, the couple arrived in San Francisco, where they first lived in their van before moving to Elsie Street in the Bernal Heights district.[1] In the mid-1960s, he participated in Ken Kesey’s Acid Tests. His first art exhibition was for the Jook Savages, celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Psychedelic Shop on Haight Street. Organizers for the Human Be-In saw his work and asked him to design a poster for their January 1967 event. Chet Helms was also impressed by Griffin’s work and asked him to design posters for the Family Dog dance concerts at the Avalon Ballroom, which led Griffin to create concert posters for the Charlatans. In 1967, Griffin, Kelley, Mouse, Victor Moscoso and Wes Wilson teamed as the founders of Berkeley Bonaparte, a company that created and marketed psychedelic posters. Griffin returned to Southern California in 1969, eventually settling in San Clemente.[1]

Griffin adopted Christianity in November 1970, which led to fundamental changes in his lifestyle and in the style and content of his art. His 1973 painting Sail on Sailor for the band Mustard Seed Faith is an example of his fine art painting from this period. His most significant 1970s project was the creation of hundreds of paintings and drawings for The Gospel of John, published by the Christian record label Maranatha! Music. He also produced much album art for Maranatha! during the 1970s and 1980s.[2]

Rick Griffin lost his life shortly after a motorcycle accident on August 15, 1991, in Petaluma, California. He was thrown from his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he collided with a van that suddenly turned left as he attempted to pass it. He was not wearing a helmet and sustained major head injuries. He died three days later, on August 18, in nearby Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, at the age of 47.

Top Stories:
#1 Ian “Poods” Barry of Encinitas is being mourned by the local skateboard community and Brixton, a clothing and accessories accompany, in the wake of his apparently accidental death Thursday morning.

Barry’s body was found at the base of a cliff at at Beacon’s Beach in Leucadia, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.

“Despite aggressive intervention, death was pronounced a few hours later,” the office said. “Responding San Diego Sheriff Deputies conducted an investigation and it appeared the decedent fell from the cliff above the beach.”

#2 WHEN bad-ass surfing bank robber Bodhi (played by Patrick Swayze) paddles out to catch a huge wave amid a “50-year storm” at Bells Beach in Victoria at the end of the film Point Break, his FBI-agent nemesis, Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), walks away, muttering, “He’s not coming back.”

The scene is symbolic of what is happening to the Australian surf industry, part of which was born at Torquay, the town adjacent to Bells. A 50-year storm, more intense than the slow-motion waves featured in the movie, is gathering.

The turbulence began on September 17, when news leaked that Rip Curl, the iconic multinational surf company founded in Torquay in 1969 and still mostly owned by surf buddies Brian Singer and Doug Warbrick, had been quietly placed on the market. Their subsequent press release gave only vague reasons for the sale. Requests from Inquirer for an interview were declined.

Three days later, in a reflection of the business world’s appetite for equity in surf labels, one of two offers from venture capitalists for Billabong, the Gold Coast multinational struggling to pay off hundreds of millions of dollars in debt, was withdrawn. The other, from TPG, is half the value of a previous offer made earlier this year.

On the same day, New York law firm Levi & Korsinsky announced it was investigating “compensation to certain executives” at Quiksilver, another Australian-born surf label, now listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

On September 25, the Shareholders Foundation of California announced it, too, would investigate Quiksilver. It reported that while Quiksilver’s net loss increased from $US9.68m in 2010 to $US21.26m last year, several key executives received considerable pay increases. Chairman, president and chief executive Bob McKnight received an increase from “over $US2.91 million in 2010 to over $US10.2 million in 2011″.

To add to the industry’s malaise, Nike and its surf-label subsidiary Hurley announced the next day they were pulling out of the richest surf contest in the world, the US Open at Huntington Beach, California, which they had sponsored for four years.

Ironically, this year the US Open had finally achieved what pro surfing had not done for 30 years. It had been broadcast on a major free-to-air network (NBC in the US) in prime-time.

Into this perfect corporate storm walked 11-times world champion Kelly Slater, to drop the biggest bombshell of all. Asked in a video interview if he was chuffed about the US Open cracking the prime-time Holy Grail, Slater, who looked comfortably prepared for the question, said: “My answer might surprise you. I don’t actually care.”

The video has gone viral across the surfing world, gathering mostly positive responses from surfers jaded by the over-commercialism of their hobby.

“I know what surfing is,” Slater said.

The ASP seems unperturbed by Slater’s disregard for its product. “We respect Kelly’s opinions on all matters regarding professional surfing,” spokesman Dave Prodan tells Inquirer. “The ASP regularly reaches out to Kelly for insight and opinion on a variety of topics.”

Nike’s withdrawal from the US Open does not mean it is withdrawing from surfing. In fact, the parting comment from Nike’s head of action sports, Sandy Bodecker, suggests the company instead has plans to increase its involvement, with or without the ASP: “In the spirit of evolving, we are exploring new opportunities to help elevate the sport beyond the sand to new audiences around the world.”

If that sounds like a slap to the sport’s administrator, the lack of usual courtesies confirms it. “Nike did not inform the ASP of their decision to withdraw from the US Open before today’s announcement,” Prodan told Surfer magazine.

Having established a strong presence in the surf market, and having built a team of sponsored riders that includes the world No 11, Australian Julian Wilson, and 2011 women’s champion Carissa Moore, Nike is conceivably preparing to take on the surf companies on another front: surf equipment.

In 2007, Nike reinvented the boardshort, with its Hurley Phantom, a stretchy, lightweight and quick-drying pair of shorts that overnight stole a huge chunk of the world market and forced existing manufacturers to play catch-up. If Nike does the same with wetsuits, the old surf companies will lose their last exclusive claim to legitimacy.

“Nike and Hurley are definitely giving wetsuits attention,” Hurley’s then marketing manager, Pat O’Connell, told this writer in 2007. “We’ve had some pretty bright people trying to understand just what a wetsuit does. Changing it, however, is a lot of trial and error. It could be a new material or a new cut. It’s a big endeavour.”

Wilson told The Australian earlier this year: “It’s definitely something they are going to get into,” adding that Nike had commissioned wetsuits for him from a Japanese company that uses “the best rubber in the world”, making them thinner and warmer than those sold by the old surf brands.

Independent Californian wetsuit maker Ryan Buell says the storm is only just starting to blow. Buell makes custom team wetsuits for many of the big companies dipping their toe in the sport, and says the real battle for market domination will be between companies much bigger than Rip Curl, Quiksilver or Billabong.

“The surf world has lost a grip on its own industry,” Buell says. “The big dogs are coming.

“You’re only seeing Nike now, but I have an inside track because some people have already contacted me. I think we’re going to see a lot more of adidas, Puma and Oakley.”

Buell says the real prize for being seen as the definitive surf label has little to do with equipment and everything to do with clothes, particularly shoes.

“Shoes bring in so much money,” he says. “How many people actually surf? Not many. How many people pretend to surf? A lot.”

#3 The Western Australian government recently announced a $2 million plan to preemptively kill great white sharks off their coastline. In the past year, the territory has suffered five fatalities as a result of great white attacks.

“These new measures will not only help us to understand the behavior of sharks but also offer beachgoers greater protection and confidence as we head into summer,” said Western Australia’s Premier, Colin Barnett.

The decision to preemptively kill some great whites is a portion of a larger $6.8 million “shark mitigation” plan that would see the use of shark enclosure nets at some high-traffic beaches, increased tagging of sharks, further research into shark repellent, and the purchase of $500,000 of Jet Skis to give to local surf clubs to help spot sharks. The new shark-killing plan goes against current policy dictating that a shark can only be killed after they’ve attacked.

Email:#1 Bassy and Baldie- Hey there Scott &jeff & Maurice
Love the show for years now. I’m looking forward to here Maurice back on the show and i would like to ask you to give us,the listeners, an update on Maurice’s health.
I sure hope he’s doing fine because his story last time was very touching. It sure touched me because he was so open about it and about his darker periods. How did he cope to overcome?

Secondly i want to comment on your caller Steve with the idea on more local input and “eyeball” reports. I listen to your show on the other side of the planet with mostly “soupy” waves at best.
But wouldn’t you agree that your international listeners need something else?
Anyway , keep it up and say hi to Maurice from the Netherlands. Rgrds Rens

email #2: Bassy Baldy: Here we were on the East Coast of England, expecting the ’50 year storm’, and it turns out that record low ice levels in the Arctic have screwed up all the computer generated surf forecasting models that NOAA puts out; Wave Watch III — for most of Northern Europe. Gutted! Forecasting aside it makes you wonder how this pattern of warmer seas and retreating ice is going to affect things for all of us as Surfers in the years to come? http://magicseaweed.com/Sea-Ice-Forecast-Glitch-Content/3981/ Anyway, love the show, back to word of mouth and old school pressure charts it is then! Regards,Tris from York UK

FROM A SURF FORECASTING SITE: The main swell model we use all use, the NOAA NWW3, calculates swell generation on the northern boundary of its domain, based on the latest sea ice data obtained from satellite scans. The sudden and rapid change in ice concentration over the last few days revealed an area of ocean for which there exists a significant numerical issue in the mathematics responsible for calculating south bound swell. The results were a seemingly endless series of unfeasibly long period swells propagating south into Northern Europe and beyond. To clarify, it wasn’t that the model was forecasting these swells as likely, BECAUSE of the lack of ice, but that the lack of the ice exposed a bug or error in the system that hadn’t appeared in testing with a broad range of historic conditions.

email #3: Hey Bassy, Baldy,– Yeah Guy from Oz!
Whats the story behind Kelly dumping FCS this week? What will he be riding now?
Kind regards, BazMan PS. I’ve been doing rough head counts in the surf in Sydney and I reckon in regards to the stats you had on last weeks show down here the Men must make up about 96% of the surfers compared to the girls…

TOP 5 STORIES:

I survived 9/11 by surfing 15 floors on slab of concrete — Miracle hidden for 11 years by myth, disbelief
and survivor guilt is revealed for first time

Out of the terrible tragedy of 9/11 came a miraculous story of hope — a tale that became the stuff of urban myth.

It was reported that, as the North Tower fell, one man “surfed” down the falling building on a slab of concrete and survived.

The adjoining South Tower collapsed, although Pasquale and his work pals did not realize it had gone.

Only then did they descend the tower down Stairway B, their progress impeded as firemen ran upstairs to get to the crash scene. By 10.28am Pasquale, still clutching his briefcase, had reached the 22nd floor. He said: “Suddenly, I felt the handrail start to shake and heard this loud, loud noise from above.

“I crouched in a corner of the stairwell in a fetal position and covered my face with my hands. Then I felt the wall and base of the floor crack open and give way.

“That’s when I knew that this was it — the entire building was going. I said to myself, ‘My God, I can’t believe this is how I’m gonna die’.

“I thought of my wife, my unborn child, and in those split seconds I was praying, knowing that I was going to die.”

The story was mentioned tentatively by TV reporters — first as fact, then as hearsay, then as fiction.

But now, as the 11th anniversary of the terrorist attack on New York approaches, the story of the 9/11 “surfer” has finally been proved.

British documentary makers have interviewed him and got eye-witness and expert testimony from rescuers, doctors, engineers and scientists.

The result is 9/11: The Miracle Survivor, screened at 10pm on Monday on Channel 4.

The “surfer” survivor, Pasquale Buzzelli, and his wife Louise explain why the full story of “the world’s luckiest man” has taken so long to be told.

Pasquale, 43, told me exclusively: “It was difficult to talk about it. It still is.

“I lost 14 colleagues who were with me when the tower collapsed. They were the last people I saw, then they were gone.

“They were the victims and I was the survivor.

“So I had a sense of guilt. I just wanted to pretend it didn’t happen.”

Louise, also 43, said: “Pasquale did not want the eyes of the world just on him. He had lost many friends and he didn’t want their families to feel hurt by his presence.

“Yet everybody else around him was saying, ‘People need to hear your story. People need to know that there was a miracle that horrible day’. ”

At 8.46 on the morning of September 11, Pasquale was in a lift on his way up the North Tower when the first plane hit it between the 93rd and 99th floors.

The lift stopped on the 44th floor and the doors opened to scenes of panic. But he decided to continue to his office on the 64th floor, where he worked as a structural engineer for the New York Port Authority.

Pasquale was still unaware of the terrorist attack that had trapped hundreds.

But most of his colleagues were already heading down the emergency stairways.

Pasquale called Louise, who was seven months’ pregnant. He said: “I told her, ‘I’m OK, don’t be alarmed, don’t be worried, I’m perfectly fine’.

“And she said, ‘What’s the matter?’ So I said, ‘Just do me a favour, turn on the television and tell me what you see’. ”

Louise added: “I got up, hit the remote and saw the top of the North Tower alight. I said, ‘Oh my God, Pasquale, your building is on fire. They say a plane has hit your building!’ ”

At first, like many, he thought it was an accident.

He said: “That was higher up and, because the air-con and lifts were still working, I felt no sense of danger.” The full horror dawned on him and some of his colleagues when, clustered round a TV, they watched as the second plane exploded into the South Tower.

He said: “It hit at about the same level as we were up there in the sky. Yet we couldn’t see it from our window and we didn’t feel the impact. We could only watch it happening on television.

“It was a very weird feeling, so surreal. And now we knew we could die.”

He made a second call to Louise, who told him: “Why are you still there and why are you calling me? Leave!”

The building shuddered as the adjoining South Tower collapsed, although Pasquale and his work pals did not realize it had gone.

At home, Louise watched in horror as the North Tower her husband was in collapsed. She said: “I knew it was over then. There was just dust and smoke and I couldn’t watch any more.”

Incredibly, though, Pasquale was still alive. As the walls around him crumbled, he began to free-fall. He said: “I’ve never jumped out of a plane but I guess I was experiencing that feeling of surfing down, just riding the air and getting buffeted around, as if I was on a roller coaster.

“Then I saw a bright flash. When I opened my eyes it was three hours later.

“I was staring numbly at blue sky and thought I must be dead, until I felt pain in my leg.”

He was on a ledge of the ruins seven storeys up. He had fallen 15 floors but suffered just a broken leg and a crushed ankle. He was rescued by firefighters.

Pasquale called his wife from hospital, who was at home thinking he was dead.

#1 Donovan Frankenrieter concert tonight 4pm at the Billabong’s Cosmic Creek event today in @Salt Creek on the grassy knoll. FREE Concert!
Have you ever surfed in this event?

BILLABONG International shares have again risen on hopes of a takeover, but continue to trade below the price proposed by private-equity suitors.

Shares in the surf, skate and skiwear group jumped almost 4 per cent to $1.415 yesterday — on top of Thursday’s 7 per cent rise — as the market digested the news that US-based Bain Capital had joined TPG in expressing interest in an acquisition.
BAIN Captial is presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s old employer. Long ago. Apparently hey turn companies around. I think I’d rather have a surfer at the helm of Billabong. I hope htey come out this okay.

#2 The home of the late Andy Irons, the three-time world surfing champion from Kauai, sold earlier this year for $4.3 million.

Larry Wilson II of La Jolla, Calif., is listed as the buyer of the property, which is assessed at $4.33 million, according to property tax records.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom fee-simple 2,610-square-foot home on 16,408 square feet of land was built in 2003. It originally listed for $4.8 million and was on the market since September 2010 before selling in April, so it was listed for more than 500 days.

The Asian-inspired two-story home at 5494 Weke Road sits on Hanalei Bay, according to the listing.

#3 FROM ESPN: The argument could be made that the hotbed of American surfing is San Clemente, Calif. I’m may be biased, my mail gets delivered here, but the relatively quiet town has produced more game-changers and world tour surfers Jim Hogan, Matt Archbold, Christian and Nathan Fletcher, Dino and Kolohe Andino, the brothers Gudauskas, the Beschens, Chris Ward, and the list could go on and on. So ESPN Surfing tapped current rat-packer Ian Crane to see what’s going on around town these days.

I’ve been listening since the “in the lineup” days and haven’t missed an episode.
I like some of your ideas about the ASP, I have a couple of ideas of my own. Keep the two tiers and for WCT events -
Each event consists of the top 15 surfers from the previous year, next 10 surfers from the qualifying tour at the time, with the rest of the spots filled by any previous winners of the event, the top two from the junior world tour and then sponsors/ASP wildcards, trials winners and in Hawaii locals. equaling 32.
If there are too many surfers then run a quick extra round for everyone other than the top 25.
My reasoning. The gap between the top 15 or 20 and the next run, even 10 to 15 is a big gap. There are too many people on the tour who never get out of round three.
At those iconic events like Pipe or Bells or Fiji most people would rather watch Machado or Sunny Garcia or Occy than the bottom rungs of the WCT. People will say do you really want a 40 + Tom Carroll at Pipe ? but I would prefer him to some slop groveller from the QS.
Golf and tennis basically allow this type of thing and it is a huge draw card. You’re not going to get PT coming back but who wouldn’t want to see Slater at selected events for years to come or the Hopgood’s in Fiji for another five years, regardless of whether they are retired or fall out of the ratings ?
What do you guys think ? Dave Western Oz.

Some good ideas DaveO; Ten current QS surfers slide into the event. That changes rather consistently. adds new blood. The legendary pros thing… hmmm, not so sure. I like the idea of past winners being invited if they’re in top surfing form. Machodo could certainly make a run at PIPE again. There is sort of small list of guys that are worthy. They have to be under 45 years old. to be a serious contender. One problem is that past champions are getting old quickly and Kelly Slater is the only big draw of old guys and he’s still on tour. When he retires there will need to be an open slot invite for him at most events I think? He’s a bona fide “reason to watch”. Who else, under 45, would you be excited to watch at say Teahupoo or Lowers or Pipe? Machado, Dorian, ?? Who else?? At JBay… Occy? He’s too old? Next year would it be T KNox? or ????

The swell hype? The fact is that the forecasters for Surfline and for Solspot live in OC. Do they hype the living shiite out of it? Do they get paid to hype it? They get paid to be optimistic. And frankly, it is six-feet up in Orange County…bigger in some places. But not in the majority of SD county.
