January 20, 2013 – SURFING NEWS — SURFING NEWS — MAVERICKS SURF CONTEST TODAY & MUCH MUCH MORE

The top story of the week has to be today’s Big Wave World Tour contest the Mavericks Invitational at Half Moon Bay.

Contest organizers for the Mavericks Invitational 2012-2013 presented by GoPro, have confirmed that the world’s premier big wave surf contest will take place on Sunday, January 20, 2013 in Pillar Point, Half Moon Bay, CA.

“The waves are going to be insane, the weather is going to be beautiful, and the level of surfing will break new ground,” said Mavericks Invitational Contest Director Jeff Clark.

Who will win, what will the waves be like, how big, who will shine, who will wipe out?

All to be answered after the event, but what we do know is this:
1) Sunny and gorgeous with pristine conditions
2) buoys are 8′ at 19s this morning
3) Surfline reporting no Shane Dorian hurt back, No Kelly Slater, No Carlos Burle hurt shoulder

A San Francisco news source, The Inquisitor, reports that “it’s unclear why Slater is missing the event, but Slater faces a conflict with the Association of Surfing Professionals, governing body of the professional tour. Mavericks is not an ASP-sanctioned event, and as such, Slater could face being fined, losing points (in the tour standings) or having his seeding changed in ASP events if he competed at Mavericks.”

The paper reached out to Kelly Slater about his reason for pulling out, but the surf legend didn’t respond to the request. The paper tracked down another source who said Slater was disappointed to miss the tournament but relieved his spot will be filled by a dedicated Mavericks surfer. He’s only surfed there a handful of times.

I watched the Mavs cam last night at Sunset and it was dreadfully inconsistent. Will the competitors have enough time?

You will see some carnage, as the long period swell will have people out of position, cold, tight, not warmed up, peaks hitting the reef and becoming steep quickly, surfers pushing each other into the bowl, the takeoff zone squeezed.

I anticipate a young guy winning, slightly smaller surf,

Contest organizers for the Mavericks Invitational 2012-2013 presented by GoPro, have confirmed that the world’s premier big wave surf contest will take place on Sunday, January 20, 2013 in Pillar Point, Half Moon Bay, CA.

“The waves are going to be insane, the weather is going to be beautiful, and the level of surfing will break new ground,” said Mavericks Invitational Contest Director Jeff Clark.

This is the first time in three years that contest-worthy waves are headed to the
legendary surf break. Stormsurf forecaster Mark Sponsler stated, “This is looking like the best opportunity we’ve had in quite a few years with great conditions for running the contest.”

“This swell is going to offer huge waves and possibly perfect conditions. This is a very powerful swell, and we will have dramatic conditions that will push the competitors to their limits. Sunday is going to beautiful and very scary at times. I look forward to seeing plenty of glory rides,” said competitor and surfers’ representative Shawn Dollar.

More than 26,000 buyers, exhibitors, and media took to the halls of Surf Expo January 10-12 in what was the largest show in the tradeshow’s 37 year history. More than 2,500 brands were represented in 250,000 gross square feet of exhibit space and buyers from 47 states and 49 countries not only found industry mainstays but also more than 217 brands new to the show.

#4 A surfer is recovering after he was attacked by a shark on the Big Island. Paul Santos, 43, was attacked by a 15-foot tiger shark about 200 yards off shore of Kiholo Bay. According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Santos was bit on the right forearm and sustained knee injuries.

A worker at the private home of Dr. Earl Bakken responded after hearing someone shout “911.” According to Dr. Bakken’s General Manager Adam Atwood, the staff isolated Santos’ injury, stabilized him, and waited 35 minutes for paramedics to arrive. Atwood says Santos punched the shark repeatedly until it let go, and then saw it jump completely out of the water.

Santos was taken to the hospital, but was later flown to Oahu for treatment. As of Thursday afternoon, hospital officials say Santos is in stable condition. According to Atwood, sharks and turtles are known to frequent the area.

TONS OF SURF THE LAST THREE DAYS.

emails/news/notes:
hi Scott & Jeff — about the ‘FRUSTRATION’ turn and Dane Reynolds’ status as a world tour surfer,
I think he is an artist. A performance artist if you will, but one that shines and creates as he goes along.
Maybe even beyond the term free surfer, more a free-spirit surfer.
His level of performance depending more on his mind-set and inspiration than the buzzer at the beginning of the heat.

But DANE’S ‘frustration’ turn will not be bigger than TOM Carrolls snap. Because that was picture perfect – poster material , glassy with that beautiful board. Highly marketable. I call it perfect technique and balls out. Dane was more a freakshow . I call it art in progress . you shouldn’t want to shackle an artist in a world tour obligated circus. It wears off their shiny feathers we all love to see.
Have a good one — Rens

top 5 stories:
#1 RED BULL Peahi Paddle In
Twenty-one intrepid big wave paddle-in surfers from around the world have been invited to take on the menacing wave giant known as Jaws for the inaugural RED BULL JAWS, Paddle at Pe’ahi. With no assistance from motorized personal watercraft to catch these monstrous waves, the athletes competing in RED BULL JAWS will drop-in on one ideal day during the period of December 7, 2012, to March 15, 2013. The ideal conditions for the event to be called “on” are wave face heights of between 30 and 50 feet, from a NNW swell direction with light winds. An official ceremony on December 7 will open the event period. To watch the event trailer and learn more about the contest, go to www.redbullusa.com/jaws.

TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) Will this contest ever happen? Or is this just a chance to make some marketing noise without much lifting?
b) Red Bull doesn’t fool around. But either does mother nature. How many times has it been 30 feet+ with NNW direction and light wind?
c) Red Bull has already upped the game, we’re talking about it, as a fan I’m excited about it, so Red Bull has already more or less won … but… from an execution standpoint, WILL THIS EVENT EVER HAPPEN? How many years do you give Red Bull before the surf world gives an overall fail grade — from execution standpoint? One year, two years, three years? Or, no matter what happens, they’ve already PASSED just by trying to run this event?
d) What about the politics and logistics of this? Three big wave contests, all with the same waiting period. DOES Ian Walsh get left off of some invite lists because RED BULL didn’t invite certain people? NBC TV and Big Wave events in general must be troubling for the ASP, no? Or is this all sugar coated with a ‘growing the pond” mentality?
e) As of today, Shane Dorian is not on the list of surfers in the event?

#2 PIPELINE EVENT WILL BE THE MOST WATCHED EVENT IN SURFING HISTORY ; SLATER’S SWAN SONG ; PARKO VS THE WORLD
TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) No doubt, the entire surfing world will be tuning-in for this; I hope the ASP broadcast crew is prepared for MASSIVE WORLD WIDE VIEWING AUEDIENCE — web servers are fast & plentiful.
b) How much pressure is Parko feeling, on a scale of 1-10? Is he even on the North Shore yet?
c) Does Slater feel a touch more pressure knowing this is it- one last try at at World Title?

PARKO’s ASP World Title scenarios
As Parkinson is the current rankings leader on the ASP WCT, the following ASP World Title scenarios will be based on his potential finishes at Pipeline.

If Parkinson finishes 13th, 9th or 5th at the Billabong Pipe Masters:

Slater needs a 5th or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title. (*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.)

If Parkinson finishes Equal 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:

Slater needs a 3rd or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title. (*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.)

If Parkinson finishes 2nd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:

Slater needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
Fanning cannot win the 2012 ASP World Title.

If Parkinson wins the Billabong Pipe Masters, he will take the 2012 ASP World Title.

The Billabong Pipe Masters, the third jewel of the Vans Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing, will be run from December 8 – 20, 2012.
2012 ASP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR RESULTS:

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Taj Burrow (AUS)
Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Mick Fanning (AUS)
Billabong Rio Pro: John John Florence (HAW)
Volcom Fiji Pro: Kelly Slater (USA)
Billabong Pro Tahiti: Mick Fanning (AUS)
Hurley Pro at Trestles: Kelly Slater (USA)
Quiksilver Pro France: Kelly Slater (USA)
Rip Curl Pro Portugal: Julian Wilson (AUS)
O’Neill Coldwater Classic: Taj Burrow (AUS)
    Billabong Pipe Masters: TBD

#3 NIKE SELF-IMPOSED EXORCISM FROM SURFING
Nike pulling out of surfing completely ; entire team now rides for HURLEY; simply a name change and all fiscal energy that NIKE was putting in is transferred to HURLEY marketing. Really?
TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) The new ASP ZoSea sales team (is there one?) must be disappointed.
B) Does HURLEY really get all the fiscal resources from NIKE surfing, or do they have to start cutting team members? Who really moves/sells board shorts for HURLEY? In North America it’s got to be Machado. In Europe? Machado? Does Kolohe Andino move board shorts? Does Carissa Moore sell anything? Believe it or not, these considerations flow through the minds and spreadsheets of somebody at HURLEY.
c) Where does John John fit in all this?
D) This is tough situation, because of all the surf industry companies, it is my perception that HURLEY, and I mean Bob Hurley, has the most compassion, is one of the boys if you will. It would be problematic for him to let someone go. But… it’s a business.
E) If they keep everyone they have one hell of a surf team: Ace Buchan, Rob Machado, Brett Simpson, Carissa Moore, Julian Wilson, Kolohe Andino, Evan Geislman, Tim Curran, Mitch Crews, Yadin Nichols, Conner Coffin, Nat Young, Aamion Goodwin, Coco Nogales, Evan Valiere, Rizal, Laura Enever, Koa Smith, Michel Bourez, Mickey Detemple.

#4 Defending ASP world champ Kelly Slater has been called to testify in a Southern California courtroom over a trademark dispute between his clothing brand, VSTR, and New York-based apparel maker World Marketing.

At issue is whether Slater’s VSTR — which stands for Visiting, Surfing, Traveling, Responsibility — violates a trademark that World Marketing has held on its Visitor apparel line since 1998.

Under the Quiksilver umbrella, Slater launched VSTR in January. In March, World Marketing sent Quiksilver a cease-and-desist letter, to which the apparel giant responded in court, claiming no infringement. The complaint explains that VSTR is pronounced by saying each letter separately, rather than saying “visitor.”

However, during the brand’s rollout earlier this year, VSTR was widely reported as an acronym, pronounced “visitor.” Earlier this week, a representative who picked up the phone at the brand’s customer service number listed at its website also referred to the brand as “visitor.”

World Marketing has countersued, and on November 14 served the 11-time world champ a subpoena. Slater reportedly responded by saying he’s not available to testify at the moment, as he’s too busy “preparing full-time” for the last stop on the ASP’s 2012 Championship Tour. Yet again, Slater’s a contender for the title, breathing down the neck of tour frontrunner Joel Parkinson.

“I can’t really talk about the case,” World Marketing VP Neil Mossberg told a New York paper earlier this month. “I will say this: I know we are not as famous as Kelly Slater, and I know our stock is not traded like Quiksilver’s. I also know we will not be wiped out without a fight.”

“We have no comment on this,” Fresh and Clean Media’s Shelby Meade, who heads up Slater’s publicity team, told ESPN.com. The Billabong Pipe Masters, held on Hawaii’s North Shore, marks the tenth and final event of this season’s ASP World Tour. The window opens December 8.

TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) Does World Marketing group have a valid legal position here?
b) Do you see this having any effect on Kelly Slater as he prepares for Pipeline Masters?

#2 Olympic snowboard champion Shaun White apologized Tuesday for “unwise choices,” saying he got “carried away” after police accused him of pulling a hotel fire alarm that forced guests to evacuate.

White was charged with public intoxication and vandalism and is due in court Oct. 10.

The 26-year-old snowboard star said on his Facebook page he wants to apologize for “any inconvenience it caused my family, friends, business partners, the hotel and their guests. He added that he was “celebrating a happy occasion with a ton of family and friends and got carried away. I’m truly sorry for my poor behavior.”

Police responded to the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel at 2 a.m. Sunday. A drunken man identified as White pulled the fire alarm, forcing an evacuation, police added. An employee also reported seeing White destroy a hotel phone.

White was given the opportunity to sign misdemeanor citations and refused, police said. Baptist Hospital said White was treated there and released Monday before he was arrested and booked by police. A mug shot released by police shows White with a black eye.

I sure hope he’s doing fine because his story last time was very touching. It sure touched me because he was so open about it and about his darker periods. How did he cope to overcome?

Secondly i want to comment on your caller Steve with the idea on more local input and “eyeball” reports. I listen to your show on the other side of the planet with mostly “soupy” waves at best.
But wouldn’t you agree that your international listeners need something else?
Anyway , keep it up and say hi to Maurice from the Netherlands. Rgrds Rens

email #2: Bassy Baldy: Here we were on the East Coast of England, expecting the ’50 year storm’, and it turns out that record low ice levels in the Arctic have screwed up all the computer generated surf forecasting models that NOAA puts out; Wave Watch III — for most of Northern Europe. Regards,Tris from York UK

FROM A SURF FORECASTING SITE: The main swell model we use all use, the NOAA NWW3, calculates swell generation on the northern boundary of its domain, based on the latest sea ice data obtained from satellite scans. The sudden and rapid change in ice concentration over the last few days revealed an area of ocean for which there exists a significant numerical issue in the mathematics responsible for calculating south bound swell. The results were a seemingly endless series of unfeasibly long period swells propagating south into Northern Europe and beyond. To clarify, it wasn’t that the model was forecasting these swells as likely, BECAUSE of the lack of ice, but that the lack of the ice exposed a bug or error in the system that hadn’t appeared in testing with a broad range of historic conditions.

I’ve been listening since the “in the lineup” days and haven’t missed an episode.
I like some of your ideas about the ASP, I have a couple of ideas of my own. Keep the two tiers and for WCT events -
Each event consists of the top 15 surfers from the previous year, next 10 surfers from the qualifying tour at the time, with the rest of the spots filled by any previous winners of the event, the top two from the junior world tour and then sponsors/ASP wildcards, trials winners and in Hawaii locals. equaling 32.
If there are too many surfers then run a quick extra round for everyone other than the top 25.
My reasoning. The gap between the top 15 or 20 and the next run, even 10 to 15 is a big gap. There are too many people on the tour who never get out of round three.
At those iconic events like Pipe or Bells or Fiji most people would rather watch Machado or Sunny Garcia or Occy than the bottom rungs of the WCT. People will say do you really want a 40 + Tom Carroll at Pipe ? but I would prefer him to some slop groveller from the QS.
Golf and tennis basically allow this type of thing and it is a huge draw card. You’re not going to get PT coming back but who wouldn’t want to see Slater at selected events for years to come or the Hopgood’s in Fiji for another five years, regardless of whether they are retired or fall out of the ratings ?
What do you guys think ? Dave Western Oz.

Some good ideas DaveO; Ten current QS surfers slide into the event. That changes rather consistently. adds new blood. The legendary pros thing… hmmm, not so sure. I like the idea of past winners being invited if they’re in top surfing form. Machodo could certainly make a run at PIPE again. There is sort of small list of guys that are worthy. They have to be under 45 years old. to be a serious contender. One problem is that past champions are getting old quickly and Kelly Slater is the only big draw of old guys and he’s still on tour. When he retires there will need to be an open slot invite for him at most events I think? He’s a bona fide “reason to watch”. Who else, under 45, would you be excited to watch at say Teahupoo or Lowers or Pipe? Machado, Dorian, ?? Who else?? At JBay… Occy? He’s too old? Next year would it be T KNox? or ????

The swell hype? The fact is that the forecasters for Surfline and for Solspot live in OC. Do they hype the living shiite out of it? Do they get paid to hype it? They get paid to be optimistic. And frankly, it is six-feet up in Orange County…bigger in some places. But not in the majority of SD county. Can you please get Tim Bessell back on the show? It seemed that do to time constraints the interview stopped right before the main course was served. You guys started to touch on the production of boards and how imports are effecting local shapers but ran out of time. Scott it seemed you started to highlight the disconnection between shapers and consumers specifically first time buyers; I want hear more of Tim’s thoughts on the subject. It seemed that Tim could not understand why anyone would purchase a Wavestorm where you were playing the uneducated newbie who thinks a Wavestorm is a low risk board because it is cheap, safe and durable.
I personally ride all hand shaped board and have purchased two custom boards shaped by Dave Vernor in the last two years. The show is great, it makes my Monday morning commute bearable.–Dave from SF

email #2: Scott & Jeff, Really enjoyed the recent show with Ryan S. & Micah B. new team USA surf coaches

Growing up surfing NSSA, & WSA, any local South Bay contest, I was a surf frothing grom. It was a time where NSSA National Team members were looked upon as gods… The industry has changed quite a bit, and the income groms can pull in is crazy. 1-Why is it the surfing world fails to recognize that Hawaii became a state in August 1959. If we want to win, why not use all our resources? 3-Why are these kids & their sponsors ONLY stoked to be on the Team USA when it’s convenient? If someone is on the team, then they need to be ALL IN. Why aren’t their parents, sponsors & personal coaches not trying to steering/guiding them toward this great honor of representing their country.
How can we ever hope to have surfing possibly in the Olympics with the current structure? Chance Barber Manhattan Beach, now living in Chicago.

TOP 5 STORIES:

#1: LOCAL SAND REPLENISHMENT PROJECT TO BEGIN IN SD COUNTY ; DREDGE ON ITS WAYS:

A massive dredge will be off the coast of S Diego dumping massive amounts of sand on our beaches
its starts in early Sept; should last until November
Imperial beach, Oceanside, Cardiff, Solana Beach slated.

The dredge that will be used to give many North County beaches a massive influx of fresh sand this fall has finally finished its East Coast project and is coming west.
the dredge —- a 315-foot-long vessel named Liberty Island –arrive Sept. 2 in Imperial Beach, Tucker added.
Oceanside stands to get nearly 300,000 cubic yards of sand through the project —- the most of any North County city. Cardiff State Beach, which is proposed to get just under 90,000 cubic yards, will receive the lowest amount.
The equipment’s arrival date was postponed several times this summer. That worried some North County city officials, who said the fresh sand from the dredge might not last long if it was placed on the beach just before the start of the winter storm season.
The schedule calls for the dredge to be in Imperial Beach until early October, when it relocates to Oceanside.
After Oceanside, the dredge will be off the coast of Encinitas. In early November, it’s expected to move to Solana Beach, and it’s scheduled to wrap up work in south Carlsbad at the end of November.
The dredge has the ability to suck sand off the ocean floor from a depth of up to 108 feet, the company’s web site states. It has the capacity to hold up to 6,540 cubic yards of sand.
After filling up with sand, the dredge motors over to a floating pipe system that connects to the coast and pumps the sand onto beaches.
Tucker said that this dredge has double the capacity of the one that the region used for its last big sand replenishment project in 2001.
That’s going to allow work to proceed much more quickly, she said. The 2001 project lasted six to seven months, and this one will be done in three, she told the Encinitas City Council last week.

#4 Tubesteak Tracy RIP: Terry “Tubesteak” Tracy, known to friends and family as the Kahuna of Malibu, died peacefully at his home in San Clemente Wednesday at 77.
He lived in the shack at Malibu for two years
He named Kathy Kohner : Gidget ; a mash up the “girl” and “midget”
He let Gidget ride one of his boards in exchange for a peanut butter sandwich
Miki Dora was the surfer who stuck the nickname Tubesteak on Tracy
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Tracy “left his Aunt Marion’s saving and loan business on Spring Street – he couldn’t picture living his life in a suit – for a simpler way, surf sun, sand,” the family wrote in his obituary. As he told the Register in 2002, he took to sleeping on the beach at Malibu in the mid 1950s and built a wooden shack that included palm fronds and thatched bamboo mat. He lived in it for two years, holding court there as many of the best surfers of the day would surf at Malibu. A girl appeared one day at the shack – which eventually was bulldozed – and she wanted to surf, Tracy said. The girl reminded Tracy of a short girl he’d once met at a party, named Gidget. He said he told this newcomer to the shack that he’d loan her a surfboard in return for a peanut butter sandwich she was carrying. He took to calling her Gidget.
She’d never surfed before, Tracy said, and her name was Kathy Kohner. After her father, screenwriter Frederick Kohner, heard some of his daughter’s stories about what she saw at the beach, he wrote a book about it. The rest is history. Actor Cliff Robertson portrayed Tracy’s character, the great “Kahoona,” in the movie.
A San Clemente resident since 1988, Tracy told the Register that he surfed until 1980 when a large bunion developed on his left foot. He continued to hold court on the beach at San Onofre. In 2003 the city of San Clemente honored him with other local surf icons during the city’s 75th anniversary celebration. Today, street banners along South El Camino Real salute Tracy and other local surf notables. “He was ‘the Man’ at Malibu,” wrote Register columnist and surf icon Corky Carroll in 2008. Carroll, as a kid, knew Tracy at Malibu. “He had style,” Carroll wrote, “and that was both in and out of the water.” There were theories on the origin of the nickname “Tubesteak,” Carroll wrote. The columnist figured it was because Tracy’s colorful personality and his style on the waves made him “king of the hotdoggers” at Malibu.
“Tube told all kinds of stories about his name,” his wife Phyllis said this week, “but in reality Miki Dora hung ‘Tubesteak’ on him when they were young kids working at Velzy’s shop at the Manhattan Beach Pier. It stuck for a lifetime.”
In 2008 Tubesteak and Phyllis celebrated 50 years of marriage. Tube is survived by Phyllis and seven children – Pam Guinn (John), Patrick, Michael, Jonathan (Mindy), Moe, Jennifer, Jocelyn Graham (Mark) and eight grandchildren.

The average surfer in the survey was male, in his 30s, well-educated and employed full time, defying the stereotype of a surfer as young, uneducated and jobless.

To prove there is intrinsic value in a wave, the report produced last August tabulates the number of surfers in the country and how much money they shell out for the privilege of riding the waves. After surveying more than 5,000 surfers, it was concluded that about 3.3 million people in the country surf 108 times a year, drive an average of 10 miles per session and contribute at least $2 billion to the U.S. economy. The median surfer these days is 34 and pulls in more than $75,000 a year, according to Nelsen’s study.

SHOW NOTES:
EMAILs/ TWEEETS / SHOUT OUTS:

Email #1: Hey Bassy and Baldy,

Like both of you guys I’m a fan of the WCT, it’s surfers and the webcasts, and like both of you I was both enthralled and disappointed by what went down at the Fiji Pro on June 8. Enthralled because regardless of who was in the water, we got to see some epic hollow big wave surfing go down. And disappointed because we didn’t get to see high-performance WCT surfing go down in rare waves of consequence. I feel Surfline did a great job at breaking down the situation, but my own thoughts — some not brought up in the article and some in response — are below.

1. While the best surfers for those conditions were indeed in the water when things lined up (and I was stoked to see them charge), this was a WCT event and if those big wave surfers were skunked because the contest was run, well, c’est la vie. Those days were blacked out for that event well in advance and those chargers were aware of this as they boarded airplanes.

2. The fact that some WCT surfers were unprepared for such a swell is inexcusable; Surfline predicted the swell well in advance (hell, I was giddy about watching such a swell hit) and so it wasn’t like it wasn’t in the mainstream. They needed to be ready in case it paid off like expected. They’re professionals, it’s their job to be prepared for all conditions. Shaun White doesn’t show up with his powder board when he’s going to be competing in the Superpipe. Or if it’s fogged out, slope style competitors bring appropriate goggles. Can you imagine Kobe Bryant not competing because he brought the wrong shoes? Please. If you don’t have the right board, whatever the conditions, then you perform accordingly. Simple.

3. The great thing about the WCT tour is that the different breaks bring out different strengths and weaknesses in different surfers; advantages and disadvantages are implicit in such a format. This is obvious. The tour tends to be skewed to fairness because of this; things balance out. The PGA Tour is interesting because of this. It’s the same idea. If you’re well-rounded, you’ll probably succeed.

4. If there was ever going to be a time when “inexperienced” WCT surfers were going to compete in those conditions, this was it. It was indeed paddleable and there was arguably some of the most experienced water patrol to minimize the risk and “pick up the pieces” when necessary. If there was ever a time to go and and push the sport forward, June 8 was the day. There might be another opportunity such as this, but with waiting periods being as constricted as they are, and the lack of spots on the tour that have such consequential “magical” days are few. Sure, there will be special swells for trestles, super tubes, bells etc., but they’ll never have the teeth of a break like Cloudbreak.

5). This is the main stage for pro surfing. These are the kind of conditions where names are made. Think about Jeremy Flores last year in Tahiti. Here’s a kid, who only a couple of years earlier opted not to charge the big stuff when presented the opportunity (the infamous vote to wait or not for an incoming swell) in competition and has now been invited to the Eddie based on his performance. The ASP missed an opportunity to further its lesser-known and younger surfers — the brands future — beyond Kelly Slater. A potential gutsy, surprise performance from somebody unexpected was squandered. Somebody was robbed of the opportunity to make a name for themselves. Imagine an XXL nominee in a WCT jersey? Competition is how these athletes at that level push each other. Those who have it in them to step up, will. Those who don’t, won’t. Simple. Competitive, live sports are compelling because of the drama they create; we truly don’t know what’s going to happen. That’s exciting. It’s not scripted. Think Michael Jordan. Think Willis Reed. Think Kirk Gibson. All big performances on the biggest stage. All legendary.

Look, it was great to see all those waves ridden by guys who do that for a living. As a surf fan, and now a quadriplegic who doesn’t surf much, I was in heaven. But this was a WCT event, and this kind of high-level competition can’t be duplicated during a free surf. Yeah, guys push each other with each wave ridden no matter what, but it’s different — it’s friendlier. Look at the emotion generated between Adriano and CJ; that was only because winning and losing were on the line i.e. ratings points, money, personal accolades, a career.

So as exciting as it was to watch some of the best big wave surfers do what they do in conditions they’re familiar with, it would have been far more riveting and dramatic to see WCTers make competitive surfing history, and quite possibly witness an unexpected legendary performance. Extraordinary circumstances have a way of bringing out the extraordinary in humans.

Oh, what could have been.

Great show guys! Peace and aloha.

Segment #2 Brought to you by THE BOARDROOM INTERNATIONAL SURFBOARD SHOW Oct 6 & 7 Del Mar Farigrounds – more info at http://surfboardshow.com

SURFING should consider a separate big-wave tour, says 11-time world champion Kelly Slater.

Slater was responding to questions from The Australian regarding the decision to halt the Volcom Fiji Pro in what turned out to be enormous, perfect waves at Cloudbreak.

When that event was called off, it allowed up to 30 big-wave specialists, who had flown in especially for the occasion, to put on their own show. The session was broadcast live on Volcom’s webcast and its TV affiliates.

Asked if the decision not to run the event had diminished the sport’s marketability, Slater said: “It actually brings up a more interesting question about the Association of Surfing Professionals backing a big-wave world tour or events in a specialty way as they happen.

“These (big-wave) guys and these swells need a good platform that supports what they’re already doing and someone to really document the whole lifestyle and help these guys out more.”
The most influential people in Sport

As reported in The Australian last week, the decision to abandon the contest came down to a split vote, with head judge Richie Porta voting for the event to proceed and contest director Matt Wilson and a representative of the surfers calling for a postponement.

There has been some speculation in online forums about exactly who was the surfer who voted with Wilson to stop the contest. However, Taj Burrow, who would have been in the first heat if the event had continued, said the surfers’ vote had been the result of a kind of consensus.

Burrow said he was consulted, as were a handful of other surfers in the ensuing heats. “I was scared,” Burrow said with a wry laugh.

“I’m pretty sure the surfers felt like we just didn’t have big enough boards. It was just this really weird, unorganised moment. In the meantime, the big-wave guys were out there going nuts and a lot of us felt we’d just watch them.”

The incident also raises the issue of the role of the contest director, and whose interests he represents. In an email to The Australian, Wilson, who normally works for the ASP as a regional director, said he was still being employed by the ASP at the time of the announcement to call off the contest.

But ASP tour manager Renato Hickel said: “For that event, Matt was the contest director through Volcom. Once the event accepts, he’s working for the event.”

The distinction is important. Volcom was in a win-win situation at the time. Call the event on, and the world’s most famous surfers will throw themselves at huge waves, live on Volcom’s broadcast. Call the event off, and it still gets to broadcast the unsanctioned big-wave session anyway, regardless of the opportunity lost for the ASP.

Slater said the ASP should have one contest director for the entire season, whose allegiance is to the ASP.

“We should have a single contest director for all events hired by ASP who works closely with the people who know each spot best,” he said. “We have seen cases where contest directors can run based on conditions that suit their friends/sponsored riders best. It’s human nature. We need someone at arm’s length.”

Slater added, however, he wasn’t criticising Wilson. “I don’t think he did a bad job.”

#2 Parko to Paddle Molokai. From JoelParko.com
How long has the idea of doing the Molokai race been floating around in your head?

It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long while now, but I never thought I’d ever get the chance. It’s always been on the bucket list but I never thought it’d come together until I’d finished with the tour.

How much of the race’s vibe have you soaked up over the years?

I’m always watching it every year. We’re generally in J-Bay when it’s on and I’m always checking it out. I guess Jamie (Mitchell, 10-time winner) is the king of it and being a Gold Coast surfer I’ve always been interested in the race and how he went. It’s been in the back of my mind to give it a go one year and experience it.

Are you doing it solo or as a team?

I’m doing it as a team with Wes (Berg). He’s one of the best board paddlers in the world and a guy I’ve trained with for years now, so he’s a pretty handy guy to do the race with.

How do you think you’ll go?

[Laughing] I’ll just be happy to finish. I’m there for the experience, not the win. It’s about being in the ocean, that’s why I’m doing it.

And you’re hearing the Kelly might be doing it as well?

Yeah… [laughing] maybe he doesn’t want Jamie to get to 11 Molokai wins! Nah, I reckon he’ll be doing it for pretty much the same reasons I’m doing it. I reckon he’s probably been thinking about doing it for a while too. It’ll be good having him in the race

#3 Matt Biolos off to Spain to shapes, so if you want him to make you a board call the Pukas factory in Spain and Matt will dial you in.

#4 Congrats to Jake Marshall from Encinitas Ca, for winning the boys U14 division of the USA Surf Championship yesterday at Lowers.

#5 Want to paddle a Downwinder on the Mainland? The Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge (CGPC) is a Festival celebrating the sport of Stand Up Paddling in the spectacular Columbia River Gorge. The 2012 Gorge Paddle Challenge will once again feature a Distance Downwind Race, a Course Race, a Team Relay Race and a recreational, non-competitive Paddle for the Park, a fundraiser for the new Hood River Waterfront Park. In addition, there will be SUP exhibits from many companies, free SUP lessons and demos, live music and more!

The inaugural 2011 Gorge Paddle Challenge was held in near perfect conditions at the Hood River Waterfront Park. The Event was a huge success, with tremendous positive feedback from the athletes, sponsors and spectators. With over $15,000 in prize money given away the CGPC became one of the top prize money races in the US.

EMAIL: Hi Bassy and Baldy!

First off, I would like to say that I am a huge fan of the show! I download the podcasts weekly and listen to them over here in Scotland imagining the sunshine while we have snow! You guys really need to stop moaning about the water being cold in San Diego, it’s May and we still have snow on the hills.

My name is Allyn Harper and I am the film maker behind “Through The Whisky Barrel”. I am so stoked that my film was selected to be showcased at the San Diego Film Festival this weekend. It really is a huge honour to represent Scotland over in one of my favourite places in the world!

I am gutted that I could not be over there fro the SD Surf Film fest weekend to meet you all and hang out. I am planning a trip over later in the summer and hope to meet everyone involved then!

It would be great to hear from you both, as your show always gets me stoked when I listen to it every Monday morning. Yeah Guy!

Also, if you can give me an address, I’d like to send you out a couple of copies of the film.

I was happy to get the hood off this weekend for the first time this year, as we are now basking in 46F water. You guys would be more than welcome over here anytime, as long as you can cope with the chilly weather and uncrowded waves.

Cheers,

Allyn Harper

SHOW NOTES:

Segment 2:
Brought to you by THE BOARDROOM INTERNATIONAL SURF BOARD SHOW Oct 6 & 7 2012 DM fairgrounds honoring 4X World Champion MR Top 5 Stories

1) Volcom Fiji Pro started yesterday, Round 1 in solid 6-8′ Cloudbreak; really if you were there, the boat dirvers would be calling it 4-6′ ; easily 10′ faces out there. Big moment was Mitch Coleborn snatching victory from Kelly Slater in the final moments of their round one heat.

Fantasy Surfer Fans, let me tell you… when it is this big or bigger, it is all about experience. Time in the water at Cloudbreak, very difficult wave to figure it out, until you’ve figured it out. Veterans will do good, unless it gets smaller and moves to Restaurants. Event then, you need to know the wave.
Kolohe, Gabe Medina, Miguel Pupo, Julian Wilson, young guns on tour were firing blanks today. Except John John FLorence, who went over the falls, and then dominated late.

John John Florence (HAW), 19, who took out his inaugural ASP WCT victory in Brazil last month, recovered from a recent bout of flu in Fiji to take a come-from-behind victory over fellow rookie Miguel Pupo (BRA), 20, and veteran Kieren Perrow (AUS), 35.

“My confidence is there, but I’ve been sick the last few days,” Florence said. “I had a session the other day, so the confidence is there and it’s kind of not. I went over the falls on that one and it was a good warm up to get kind of shaken up a bit.”

Friday the 8th (potential to see very long period forerunners as early as Thursday late afternoon and evening), from a storm that will move through the Southern Ocean and toward New Zealand over the next few days. If the storm behaves as currently forecast surf will easily be triple overhead+++ and larger at Cloudbreak.

VOLCOM FIJI PRO ROUND 2 RESULTS:
Heat 1: Kelly Slater (USA) vs. Isei Tokovu (FIJ)

On March 14, 2012, while filming underwater on location off the coast of an atoll in French Polynesia, Mike saw a diver below him in distress. Acting instinctively, Mike helped the diver make an emergency ascent but in the process was partially paralyzed from a severe case of the bends. While the man he saved was ultimately able to walk away from the incident, Mike was told he may never walk again. His doctors say it will take six months to find out how well he will recover.
explore.org, the philanthropic media organization and multi-media arm of the Annenberg Foundation, has launched a special web video series, photo gallery and community web site today that chronicles the extraordinary life, work, and current struggle with paraplegia of world renowned ocean cinematographer, Mike Prickett (Hawaii).

5) Catching up with Executive Director of a new surfboard show, THE BOARDROOM

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 31 May, 2012 : – - Scott Bass has a hefty resume in the surf world and is most well known as being the instrument behind the Sacred Craft surfboard show. As the owners of Sacred Craft decided not to run the show this year, Scott’s been hit with a lot of questions about future surfboard shows. In the following interview he answers a lot of those questions…

Rob Farrow: So, first off, tell us what happened to Sacred Craft ®*, why did you change the name to THE BOARDROOM?
Well. Frankly I can’t talk too much about Sacred Craft ® because it is not my property. I do not own it. It is not really my place to discuss it. The Nielsen Corporation, the company that produced the ASR shows in San Diego, owns Sacred Craft ®. But, understanding that you and everybody in the industry looks to me for the answer to that question, I can tell you that I was told by the Nielsen Corporation that Sacred Craft ® won’t happen in 2012. Let me be clear that I did not change the name. I can’t change the name of something I do not own. The Boardroom International Surfboard Show is in fact an entirely new surfboard show and is in no way affiliated with Sacred Craft ®.

RF: How is THE BOARDROOM new, what makes it different?
As a lover of surfboards I can tell you that surfboards are at the core of the THE BOARDROOM show, as they should be. I was reading a back-issue Surfer’s Journal entry written by Tom Morey, a fabulous read, and what came across more than anything was that Morey understood and understands, without any sub-cultural dogma, that riding waves no matter what the vehicle, puts smiles on people faces: hand-planes, mats, McDonalds trays, five fins, four fins, no fins, wave-skates, carbon, poly, eps, – whatever. I believe as a sub-culture surfers are finally understanding what Morey has known for decades. We are finally explorers on the wave face, rather than captives. As far as what we use to ride the waves with, I really believe that we as surfers are at a liberating place on our evolutionary surfing timeline. Technology and groovy-ness are becoming comfortable with each other.

RF: That’s rather abstract, what do you mean by that exactly?
I was watching video of Bruce Irons and Todd Morcom getting towed into some meaty Mexican beach break, Colima or Oaxaca, and they were was riding boards that were 4’10”. Doing step-offs, it was incredible. Check out the Volcom Annhilator series videos. Mind-blowing. Sometimes as surfers we are so close to it, we live it, and sometimes we are too close. We can’t see the trees because of the forest. We fail to recognize how radically and how quickly technology is changing things for us. And then to juxtapose, yesterday I was surfing some meager windswell with some 20-something hipster surfers from Newport Beach. They had the whole hipster vibe going, and these guys put a real emphasis on style. They were riding mid-length 6’10” single fins, that they had hand-shaped themselves. They put such emphasis on their bottom turns. There was so much style and body posturing and arching. They were performance artists. And so of course were Bruce and Morcom. Two different perspectives that in the past might not have been able to co-exist, from a marketing perspective, or even in the same physical space. But now it is okay. You can have iced tea for breakfast. And that is really what THE BOARDROOM is all about. It is about Tom Morey’s simple understanding – you and a wave. Go ride it. We don’t care how. Just ride it man.

RF: What are you riding these days?
I’ve been having a blast on some longer single fins that I turned into 2+1’s, widow-makers. They are really similar to the type of single-fins I learned on in the late 70s: single-wing, round pins, slight beak nose, wide-point forward. But they have modern rockers and bottoms, I’ve added the side-bites which I found really helps, especially through full rail-to-rail transitions within the roundhouse cutback. I’m also into Carl’s (Ekstrom) Asyms, and I’m due for the next adventure with Carl. He’s going to do one with the long rail on my heel side. I have so many fun boards right now it’s stupid. I’ve been on the search for the perfect round board. I’ve also been really into the hand plane thing. I can spend 20 minutes swimming with a hand plane and get such a great workout. They waves can be crap, which they often are, but all I need is a 1’-foot wave, an open shoulder. I’ve been doing a little bit of standup too. Long distance runs, which for me is 2 miles (ha). I will say that I’ve taken to that role of aging-shortboard-martyr-dude. You know that crusty older dude that stubbornly sits and sits and sits, up to his armpits in water, for a meager little wave on his 5’ 10” short board while longboarders and SUPS are doing laps around him. That’s me. Sometimes I laugh at myself, “How did I become that guy?” Usually that’s about the time I realize it’s time to swim with the hand plane.

RF: A mainstay of your shows is the tribute to a legendary shaper, I see you have Mark Richards involved this year.
Yes. I am super excited about MR being honored at THE BOARDROOM. I’m calling it the Icons of Foam Tribute. US Blanks is the presenting sponsor and it will follow a similar format to other shape-off competitions. As you know, MR is a 4X World Champion on the ASP World Tour. He is a super person, a wonderful ambassador, a surfing and shaping legend. MR has selected some contemporaries as well as some newer guys to shape. The list is solid: Reno, Rawson, Ricky Carroll (2X winner), Wayne Rich (2X winner and defending champ), John Pyzel (John John’s shaper) and young gun, 15-year-old Taz from the Canary Islands. The MR twin fin is a classic. What MR did on those boards was absolutely masterful. Look, if you get me started on MR I could go on for days. I think the one thing that really sticks out for me, is that he is one of only two world champions to shape his own equipment while on a world title campaign. The other being PT (Peter Townend). Today that’s is simply unheard of.

RF: What about Slater?
Kelly Slater might be in that mix as well. I’m simply not sure how far Kelly translates his designs from the computer to the shaping bay. I certainly do not want to shortchange Kelly. And if he has actually finish–shaped and signed a board that he rode during a world-title campaign, than I want to give him that due as well. Regardless, Slater deserves a lot of credit for opening up the minds of the every day surfer. Kelly is in a powerful position and when he rides something new people sit up and take notice. Just look at Sean Mattison’s Nubster fin. Kelly is an advocate of surfboard design and the surfboard industry. On the webcasts he is often talking about board design, not just his own, but his fellow competitors. It is great for the surfboard industry. In many ways Kelly personifies what Tom Morey was discussing in that article. Kelly is that hardcore surfer who is taking all the tools, the computer, the technologies, the new fins systems, the new foams – all of it, and he’s experimenting. It is not a one-size-fits-all world, and Slater, just as a consequence of his own curious nature and his position as ad-hoc spokesman for surfing, helps push that way of thinking.

RF: What underground shaper is fits that mold, a guy who is experimenting with new technologies and all the tools that are out there?
Well, I shouldn’t really name names because, well really there are too many to name here. You know, we’re going to have a ‘Best of Show’ area within THE BOARDROOM and the viewing public can put in their vote on this very subject. There are five different categories: concept board, longboard, shortboard, sustainable, and wood. The winners of each category will be put into the finals and the viewing public will decide the ‘Best of Show’ from the five category winners. We are asking each exhibitor to enter a board but you don’t have to be an exhibitor to enter a board. It’ll be a great viewing area with state-of-the-art boards. There will be drool buckets… and towels.

RF: I saw on a recent press release that you are including something called ‘Cinema Grotto,’ what exactly is that and does it include Playboy Bunnies?
Ah. No, no playboy bunnies. We’re going to view short films in the Cinema Grotto. The short film genre has been an effective story telling device for, pardon the pun, a long time. It’s also much more challenging for the filmmaker. There are some incredible short films out there. The San Diego Surf Film Festival inspired me to ask some of these filmmakers to show off their films at THE BOARDROOM. Of course we are hoping to show Markus Davids new documentary on the legendary shapers called, fittingly, BoardRoom – Legends of Shaping.

What else do you have planned for THE BOARDROOM?
Oh man, lots of stuff. Tons of live shaping and an inside the shaping bay QnA design discussion with the worlds best board builders including Rusty Preisendorfer, Matt Biolos, Chris Christenson, Matt Calvani, Daniel Tomson and many others. A morning board & gear demo at 15th St., a longboard skatezone, live performance surf art benefitting long time Hobie shaper Terry Martin (RIP) & the Sport of Kings Foundation, the Surfing Heritage Foundation Gun Club lounge, live music, a vintage surf swap & appraisals, free surfboards. It’d be best to check out the website for all the info and the happs.

One last thing, when and where?
October 6 & 7 Del Mar Fairgrounds; doors open at 10am.

REEF CHECK – Greg Hodgson Reef Check Foundation is an international non-profit organization dedicated to conservation of two ecosystems: tropical coral reefs and California rocky reefs.
How long has it been going on?
How do you make it sexy, in other words, the people that dive on reefs get it, surfers get it, how do you reach the kid in Oklahoma or the president of an ad agency or the chamber of commerce in Bali?
We have Surfrider Foundation, Save The Waves, Heal the Bay, Surfers Against Sewage, Greenpeace, Green Surf, Oceana, Surfers For Cetaceans, the list goes on and on… are there too many causes?

Robert McClatchy the Reluctant Capitalist, BoD ? Huh?

Reef Check carries out its work through three major programs:

1) EcoDiver Program – an education and certification program for kids to adults who want to learn more about the ocean and take part in protecting reef ecosystems.
2) Coral Reef Management Program – a coral reef monitoring and management system that focuses on establishing Marine Protected Areas to conserve coral reefs while encouraging sustainable use of surrounding reefs by local residents.
3) Reef Check California – a volunteer monitoring program for California rocky reefs designed to provide data for managers and to build a conservation constituency among California divers.

Year of the REEF singing contest: REEF IDOL

We are the earth, the earth is us
our planet’s future is in our trust
The mountains, the sky, the ocean blue
This beauty entrusted to me and you
Fishes and coral that live in the sea
Help sustain the lives of you and me
They’re fragile we all need to understand
Their future’s the future of woman and man

CHORUS: The year of the reef is every year.
Reefs sustain the life we hold so dear
The beauty of the reef everyone should see
The future of reefs depends…………..on you and me.

Segment 3: Brought to you by THE BOARDROOM INTERNATIONAL SURF BOARD SHOW Oct 6 & 7 2012 DM fairgrounds honoring 4X World Champion MR
TOP 5 Stories :
1) The winning bid for 11-time World Champion surfer Kelly Slater’s surfboard was a whopping $4,000, which was matched as promised by another $4,000 from the champions own pocket for an $8,000 donation going to the ROLE Foundation, a Bali-based environmental organization that is actively engaged in the fight to clean up Bali.

ROLE’s founder and CEO Michael O’Leary was extremely gratified when he heard the news, saying, “I would like to thank Kelly Slater from the bottom of my heart for raising these much needed funds. This $8,000 will go toward managing our seven projects that include education programs such as the Children’s Interactive Environmental Education Tour, which is directed at bringing our environmental message to the families and the communities of Bali through the kids, and on to the Solid and Liquid Waste Infrastructure Construction Project at Uluwatu.”

“Kelly also has brought a great measure of global awareness to Bali’s dire pollution problems, and hopefully this awareness will help gain further commitments towards attaining a healthy island and coastal environmental eco-systems for Bali’s land, waterways, reefs and seas. Cheers to the Champ, Kelly Slater, and to Quiksilver for helping the Role Foundation, ‘Fight the Good Fight’, here in Bali,” added O’Leary.

2) Can will and should Occy re-qualify SURFERMAG.com: http://www.surfermag.com/features/occy%E2%80%99s-third-wind/

“What Occy can do, however, is destroy a meaty face on his backside more efficiently than anyone else in the world. This was true 10 years ago, and its still true today.”– SURFERmag.com
That’s not true. Is IT?? Who has a more efficient and meaty backside hack than OCCY?

OCCY: “I mean it might be due to the equipment, which has gotten a lot better—thinner, faster, better boards. But, I probably am surfing the best I ever have,” says Occy. “It’s hard to tell but it kind of feels like it. I would probably have to look at footage, but it feels like it. Especially at Margaret’s and at home on the Gold Coast when it’s early in the morning and nobody’s watching. But who’s going to believe it because nobody’s watching!”

4) Volcom Fiji Pro – event starts June 3 - Solspot.com Forecast looks like June 2nd a solid 6-8 swell hits – dropping slightly of the first day of the waiting period, but plenty of waves…

5) For what it is worth… Hearing thru the grapevine that Kelly Slater is the newest addition to the GoPRO team.

EMAILS / TWEETS / SHOUT OUTS: A lot of people commenting about Kelly Slater getting robbed at Bells Beach… most of them agreeing that given that the event was in Australia, that Mick is a Rip Curl rider, in a Rip Curl event, that it was sort of a home field advantage type victory. I think you have to knock the champ out. If anything, Kelly’s heat–being combo-ed– Slater played it like Muhammed Ali’s epic rope – a – dope bout with George Foreman. Fanning had Slater on the ropes, combo-ed, then the Champ sprang to life with a 10 point ride and what should have been an 8.7.

Surf report:brought to you by Nicaragua Surf Report.com – 4/15 San Diego – A good surfing day today, if you are willing to brave the urban rainoff from the rain, which, by the way, we are officially telling you to do, stay away for 72 hrs after a rain. Now, if you don’t want to heed our advise and you do decide to go surfing in the dirty water, it looks pretty darn good. Swell energy is mixed up; longer period stuff from the west 4′ @14 secs; 5′ of windswell @8 secs. All energy is fading ; especially the windswell. Tide is ebbs low today at 1245 .05

NEXT WEEK: Tuesday and Wednesday look best – Tuesday sees a new small but fun — shoulder high at best — south swell biggest and best in the North County; Wed sees a decent pop of WNW swell (285-300) will move in and be strongest on Wednesday the 18th, although we will see a building trend throughout the day Tuesday the 17th. Chest-shoulder-head high surf at exposed breaks, with some overhead waves at South county spots.

how

Earth Day is April 22nd.

Quiz:
1) The first Earth Day was: April 22, 1970, Earth Day marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Approximately 20 million Americans participated.
2) What city first observed Earth Day with an offical Proclamation? The first Proclamation of Earth Day was by San Francisco, the City of Saint Francis, patron saint of ecology.
3) What famous news anchor hosted the first EarthDay TV special? Walter Cronkite CBS.
4) Name the famous composer whose song Ode To JOy is the offical Earth Day anthme? Beethoven.

The “Earth Day Anthem” below satisfies these requirements for a universal song associated with Earth Day. Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” melody is already the official anthem of the European Union (in that case purely instrumental without lyrics), the melody is widely recognized and easily performed, in the public domain, and originally composed for voice. Lyrics for the Earth Day Anthem set to “Ode to Joy” are provided below:

Joyful joyful we adore our Earth in all its wonderment
Simple gifts of nature that all join into a paradise
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love through out all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world
Now we must resolve to protect her
Show her our love through out all time
With our gentle hand and touch
We make our home a newborn world

Top 5 Stories

#1 Coolest Surfer Ever: Matt Warshaw chimed in on this subject online this week: “Surfers really just did one cool thing, which was to be counterculture with a smile. To be really for something – riding waves all day – and not especially against anything; to be counterculture and athletic at the same time.” Who is this person?

Tubesteak Tracy: Built on fort at Malibu 1st point and rode donkeys to the beach complete with burlap sack Monk garb whilst chomping on a cigar. Pretty cool.
Dora? Ripped off credit card companies. Not cool to spend time in jail.
Rabbit B? Always thought he was very cool. Surfing style was great. On-land style was his own. Too focused on pro surfing? Thing is, pro surfing in his time, was counter culture to the surf culture, at least here in SDiego.
Rasta? He might stand for too much.
Rob Machado? Pretty cool. High fives on his way to second place. Very cool on a wave. When Rob catches a wave, it’s as if he came home, relaxed on the couch, threw his feet up, and started clicking thru the channels.
Dane Reynolds? Very cool cat. Tries too hard for the non-corpo vibe, but everyone knows he’s the marketing vehicle for the next five years.
Wilko? Might be one of the coolest contemporary guys. You get the feeling he does his own thing and if his sponsors try to capitalize on it, he switches gears.
Curren? I think Tom Curren is the coolest.

#2 The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) will honor big wave surfer Shane Dorian as Waterman of the Year, world renowned ocean explorer, filmmaker, television personality and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau as Environmentalist of the Year, and revolutionary wave forecaster and surfing Hall of Famer the late Sean Collins with the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award, as part of the association’s annual Waterman’s Weekend environmental fundraiser. the 2012 Waterman’s Weekend will be held August 10-11, and will raise funds for 20 ocean conservation organizations.

#3 The MP Classic kicks off remembering its namesake, Michael Peterson epic memeorial Paddleout ceremnoy

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 April, 2012 : – - Gold Coast — In a fitting tribute to the late Michael Peterson, three generations of Coolangatta surfers in the form of Sheldon Simkus (Snapper Rocks, Qld), Dean Morrison (Snapper Rocks, Qld) and none other than Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew all advanced through the opening round of the Chiko MP Classic today, in powerful one-metre waves at Duranbah Beach.

However, with Peterson’s passing only two weeks prior to this weekend’s 11th annual surfing event named in his honour – The MP Classic, the day undoubtedly belonged to 1978 World Champion Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Batholomew, who entered the event as a tribute to his fellow iconic Coolangatta surfer.

Earlier in the day, Bartholomew took part in a momentous paddle-out memorial service held at Peterson’s home break of Kirra Point, where hundreds of family, friends and fellow surfers including the likes of Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning also gathered to honour Peterson’s memory.

#4 Lars Muschoot Norway surfer is semi-crazy.

This guy surfers in some cold ass water.

Lars Musschoot is from Ostend, Belgium. At age 11 his father moved to the Canary Islands. Each school vacation Lars & his brother Niels travelled to the Canary’s to visit their dad. They spent every day at the beach and this is when Lars got in to surfing. He started surfing all year round in Belgium. With water temperatures of 6° during wintertime he told himself a thousand times he wouldn’t surf any more during the winter in Belgium, but an hour later I found himself back in the freezing ocean again.
