“Truck-n-Trailer” Mobile Surfboard-Building Classroom
by Mike & Brad from Grain Surfboards
Project: To share the craft of wood board-building with the West we need a truck we can sleep in, towing a trailer/mobile classroom.
So our plan is this: with your help, we’ll get a truck we can sleep in, and a utility trailer large enough to fit piles of tools, shaping stands, and gear, and we’ll hit the road out west. Your funding assistance will also help outfit this rig – for instance, we’ll need some mobile shop-tools, and other stuff classes require. If things work out, we’ll set this up to burn alternative fuels as well.

Story #3 out of Auctralian press… ELEVEN-times world surfing champion Kelly Slater says recreational drug use in his sport is “rampant”.
But the American superstar does not believe drug-testing is the answer, saying addicts have to want to kick the habit and need support.
In an exclusive interview with The Courier-Mail ahead of the season-opening Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast, Slater also quashed retirement speculation and vowed to chase a 12th world title at the age of 41.
He opened up about drugs in sport after the Lance Armstrong scandal and claims against some Australian sports.
He said he did not believe surfing had a performance-enhancing drug problem because he did not “think there’s a drug you can take to make you surf better”.
Asked if there was a recreational drug problem, he said: “There clearly is – absolutely. There’s no denying that, it’s rampant, it’s full-on.”
Access all Areas. $1 for the first 28 days. Only $2.95 a week thereafter. Learn more.
Slater said the Association of Surfing Professionals had introduced drug-testing last year, but it had faltered.
“They tested us at the first event and I never got tested again all year,” he said.
“Why talk about it and not do it? Why bother? Either do it or don’t do it.”
However, Slater said he did not believe drug-testing would help surfers hooked on recreational substances.
He questioned Queensland surf legend Gary “Kong” Elkerton’s assertion, in a recently-released biography, that drug-testing might have saved Slater’s friend, triple world champion Andy Irons, who died in 2010 after battling substance abuse.
“Those are personal, private matters and it’s really hard to dredge them up publicly and come to any kind of conclusion,” Slater said.
“Andy was the one who put himself in that situation. Had he had more outside pressure to change, that might have pushed him over the edge more quickly.
“I know a lot of drug addicts and you can’t force them to go get help if they don’t want it. You just have to show those people love and support and let them know that if they need your help, you’re there.”
Slater said he would support more stringent drug-testing in surfing.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily my battle to deal with because I’ve been drug-free my whole life,” he said.
Despite losing the world title to Joel Parkinson in an epic battle in Hawaii in December, Slater said he was motivated to chase a 12th crown.
“I’m going to go for it and try to put together a good year,” he said.
“Pretty much every day I get some older dude come up to me and say ‘Oh, mate, you’ve got to keep going’.
“I was one heat away from winning the title last year. I came really close and it wasn’t really heartbreaking. I was happy for Parko.
“But right now everyone’s got a target on their back we’re all starting at zero.”

#4 story THE BOARDROOM AT HB US OPEN OF SURF JULY 23-27
The freestanding, climate-controlled pavilion will be held alongside the world’s largest surfing festival between July 23 to 27, during the last week of the competition.
Will the Boardroom still take place at its original location in San Diego, or will this new show serve as its sole location now?
Scott Bass: All locations, venues, and regions are in discussion and we absolutely look forward to serving as many regions/locales as the market will bare.
My surfboard show roots in San Diego are strong. I’m in the water everyday—in San Diego. San Diego is the foundational location, the genesis location, if you will, of The Boardroom shows. A San Diego show will happen again.
It’s also good to take a break from a locale. I produced five shows in a row, from 2007 to 2012, in San Diego. I’m also very proud of the fact that we have produced shows in Santa Cruz and Ventura.
Our track record indicates that we appreciate and understand that surfers are more or less regional. The opportunity to showcase surf gear and to highlight local shapers and manufacturers in different areas throughout North America—and the world for that matter—is in front of us.
The East Coast is wide open and we know that the East Coast surfer is looking to celebrate at The Boardroom. As you may know, The Boardroom is co-locating with Surf Expo in Orlando Florida this September. I visited out there last September and in January. Surfers are frothing for a consumer show. They are enthusiasts. They are passionate. This is who they are. This is who we are. They embrace everything surf—just as I do, just as my children do, just as my neighbor does. We are all surfers, therefore we love surfboards.
How will the format work?
Scott Bass: From a specific granular view, The Boardroom is two days trade, two days consumer. It’s important to note, however, that from a global perspective The Boardroom is a celebration of everything surf: industry, sport, culture, lifestyle.
All of that of course begins and ends with the surfboard. From that prism, The Boardroom is one big cultural happening and there is something for everyone. Retailers order product. Manufacturers discuss product. Surfers take in the latest innovations. The Boardroom is a multifaceted, five-dimensional surf magazine. Everything comes to life. Don’t just look, pick the gear up. Ride the boards. Test the wetsuit. Pull on the stretch boardies. Quiz the manufacturer. Talk to the pros. Order a board. Get an autograph. Watch fresh new clips. Smell the resin. Ride an alaia. Test a handplane. Compare fins. Watch the shaping. Discuss board design. Talk shop. It’s all there in front of you. Not just 3-d, 5-d.”
What has been the City’s reaction, and how do you see this relationship evolving in the future?
Will it look and feel like previous Boardroom shows in San Diego?
Let me be clear. It all centers around the alpha and the omega of our surf industry, our surf world, and our surf lifestyle: the surfboard. The look and feel will be the same. The surf manufacturer, the shaping culture, the vibe is centered squarely on the surfboard — our iconic symbol of enduring youth.
Think back. Way back. Way back before instant surf access or a professional world tour, or surfboard mounted cameras. The surf industry was built by surfers named Butte, Downing, Hobie, Velzy, Edwards, Bing, Hap, Noll, Takayama, Aipa, and many many others. Shapers. All of them. Surfboard manufacturers. Their ads filled the surf mags. They dressed a certain way and had their own style. They stood out. Mainstreamers would look at them and scoff.
In 2013 their legacy — dozens and dozens of core manufacturers, shapers, surfers, surf industry designers from around the world — will exhibit at The Boardroom. They will be exalted. They will be center stage. Our industry flows from its core — the surfboard.
Thankfully surf equipment has evolved and technology has blossomed. Now surf gear consists of skateboards, boardshorts, wetsuits, fins boxes, watches, leashes, waterproof cameras, rack systems, wax, rash guards, travel, clothing and swimwear made specifically by surfers and for surfing. Paipos are back! Only this time they have GoPro cameras mounted on them. Classic. The Kuhio Groin crew would be stoked!
I love surfboards. Surfers love surfboards. The Boardroom is an extension of that passion. Lots of surf gear, lots of surfers, lots of sincere stoke. At the end of the day surfers really only care about two things, waves and the equipment to ride them with.
Now, to be a little more specific, there will be a Best Of Show exhibit, two shaping bays, live shaping, laminating demonstrations, surfboard exhibits, an Icons of Foam shaping tribute. Legends of shaping. Legends of lifestyle. Short films. Genuine surf stoke and happiness. A few scoffs would be cool too.

#1 PARKO WINS WORLD TITLE AND PIPELINE MASTERS TITLE
DISCUSSION
1) CONGRATS PARKO / Baldy… you win.
2) Dorian/ Slater heat
3) Not taking anything away from Parko, but the Slater/ Kerr semi was wave starved. There was really only one good wave and Kerr got it, so, you have to think… send them some waves and things may have been different. It wasn’t as if there was a Slater vs Parko final and it was a clear cut victory… just sayin’. Not taking anything away from Parko world title which is well deserved. Just sayin…
4) After 22 years on Tour, Taylor Knox hung up his singlet at the Pipe Masters and effectively retired from professional surfing. Other power surfers from years past: Kong, BK, Ian.

The 2013 ASP World Championship Tour will commence with the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast at Snapper Rocks from March 2 to 13, 2013.
DISCUSS / TALKING POINTS:
1) Will Slater retire? Yes or No
2) Is it fair for him to only do selective events… i.e Pat G gets put in a constant state of will he or won’t he? Plays havoc with Pat G’s schedule.
3) If it’s your event, do you want Slater? Or, do you want Pat G? DUH!
#3 Deadly Sea Snake — two in one?
Sea Snake believed to be same species is actually stow separate species that look exactly alike.
University of Queensland researcher Bryan Fry and colleagues tested the serpentine DNA, the results showed that the tow snakes were separate species, and not even close relatives, as noted by the publication Asian Scientist.
This is a case of convergent evolution, wherein different species evolve independently but end up looking quite similar, according to the study, published recently in the journal Molecular Phylogenetics & Evolution. Or, as Yong put it, convergent evolution is “when different species turn up at life’s party wearing the same clothes.”

The mosaic was put up on a wall shared by Café Ipe and Surfy Surfy in Leucadia in June.
Newly sworn-in Encinitas Mayor Teresa Barth was one of several elected officials who showed up to the dedication on Wednesday.
“Everybody wanted it back up, and this is actually a blessing in disguise,” she said. “Perhaps we could look at it that way.”
#5 SURFING SANTA GET HELP

US border patrol agents plan to make sure Surfing Santa makes it across the Niagara River safely this year.
For the past 28 years, John Fulton, also known as Surfing Santa, has been dressing up like Santa and embarking on a wind-surfing trip across the Niagara River into the US to bring attention to the plight of the homeless worldwide.
In the past, Fulton has had some run-ins with border patrol in the US One year, he was arrested for illegally entering the country. But last year, US border patrol rescued him after heavy winds snapped his mast halfway through his journey.
That’s why U.S. border patrol offered to escort him across the river this year.
“He had an issue last year and we were in the right place at the right time. We already have a vessel out there anyway. If he needs help we’ll be there to provide it,” said Mike Scioli, lead border patrol agent.
Fulton asks the public to take some of their stuff, toys, food, clothes, blankets, cash, etc., and find a shelter, a homeless person, family, charity and make a donation because shelters and food banks have a greater need than ever during these tough economic times.
He is currently the longest-running surfing Santa in the world.
He will cross the river Dec. 23, beginning at 9 a.m.

TONS OF SURF THE LAST THREE DAYS.
emails/news/notes:
hi Scott & Jeff — about the ‘FRUSTRATION’ turn and Dane Reynolds’ status as a world tour surfer,
I think he is an artist. A performance artist if you will, but one that shines and creates as he goes along.
Maybe even beyond the term free surfer, more a free-spirit surfer.
His level of performance depending more on his mind-set and inspiration than the buzzer at the beginning of the heat.
But DANE’S ‘frustration’ turn will not be bigger than TOM Carrolls snap. Because that was picture perfect – poster material , glassy with that beautiful board. Highly marketable. I call it perfect technique and balls out. Dane was more a freakshow . I call it art in progress . you shouldn’t want to shackle an artist in a world tour obligated circus. It wears off their shiny feathers we all love to see.
Have a good one — Rens

#1 RED BULL Peahi Paddle In
Twenty-one intrepid big wave paddle-in surfers from around the world have been invited to take on the menacing wave giant known as Jaws for the inaugural RED BULL JAWS, Paddle at Pe’ahi. With no assistance from motorized personal watercraft to catch these monstrous waves, the athletes competing in RED BULL JAWS will drop-in on one ideal day during the period of December 7, 2012, to March 15, 2013. The ideal conditions for the event to be called “on” are wave face heights of between 30 and 50 feet, from a NNW swell direction with light winds. An official ceremony on December 7 will open the event period. To watch the event trailer and learn more about the contest, go to www.redbullusa.com/jaws.
TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) Will this contest ever happen? Or is this just a chance to make some marketing noise without much lifting?
b) Red Bull doesn’t fool around. But either does mother nature. How many times has it been 30 feet+ with NNW direction and light wind?
c) Red Bull has already upped the game, we’re talking about it, as a fan I’m excited about it, so Red Bull has already more or less won … but… from an execution standpoint, WILL THIS EVENT EVER HAPPEN? How many years do you give Red Bull before the surf world gives an overall fail grade — from execution standpoint? One year, two years, three years? Or, no matter what happens, they’ve already PASSED just by trying to run this event?
d) What about the politics and logistics of this? Three big wave contests, all with the same waiting period. DOES Ian Walsh get left off of some invite lists because RED BULL didn’t invite certain people? NBC TV and Big Wave events in general must be troubling for the ASP, no? Or is this all sugar coated with a ‘growing the pond” mentality?
e) As of today, Shane Dorian is not on the list of surfers in the event?
#2 PIPELINE EVENT WILL BE THE MOST WATCHED EVENT IN SURFING HISTORY ; SLATER’S SWAN SONG ; PARKO VS THE WORLD
TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) No doubt, the entire surfing world will be tuning-in for this; I hope the ASP broadcast crew is prepared for MASSIVE WORLD WIDE VIEWING AUEDIENCE — web servers are fast & plentiful.
b) How much pressure is Parko feeling, on a scale of 1-10? Is he even on the North Shore yet?
c) Does Slater feel a touch more pressure knowing this is it- one last try at at World Title?
PARKO’s ASP World Title scenarios
As Parkinson is the current rankings leader on the ASP WCT, the following ASP World Title scenarios will be based on his potential finishes at Pipeline.
If Parkinson finishes 13th, 9th or 5th at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
Slater needs a 5th or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title. (*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.)
If Parkinson finishes Equal 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
Slater needs a 3rd or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title. (*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline.)
If Parkinson finishes 2nd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
Slater needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
Fanning cannot win the 2012 ASP World Title.
If Parkinson wins the Billabong Pipe Masters, he will take the 2012 ASP World Title.
The Billabong Pipe Masters, the third jewel of the Vans Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing, will be run from December 8 – 20, 2012.
2012 ASP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR RESULTS:
-
Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast: Taj Burrow (AUS)
Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Mick Fanning (AUS)
Billabong Rio Pro: John John Florence (HAW)
Volcom Fiji Pro: Kelly Slater (USA)
Billabong Pro Tahiti: Mick Fanning (AUS)
Hurley Pro at Trestles: Kelly Slater (USA)
Quiksilver Pro France: Kelly Slater (USA)
Rip Curl Pro Portugal: Julian Wilson (AUS)
O’Neill Coldwater Classic: Taj Burrow (AUS)
Billabong Pipe Masters: TBD
#3 NIKE SELF-IMPOSED EXORCISM FROM SURFING
Nike pulling out of surfing completely ; entire team now rides for HURLEY; simply a name change and all fiscal energy that NIKE was putting in is transferred to HURLEY marketing. Really?
TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) The new ASP ZoSea sales team (is there one?) must be disappointed.
B) Does HURLEY really get all the fiscal resources from NIKE surfing, or do they have to start cutting team members? Who really moves/sells board shorts for HURLEY? In North America it’s got to be Machado. In Europe? Machado? Does Kolohe Andino move board shorts? Does Carissa Moore sell anything? Believe it or not, these considerations flow through the minds and spreadsheets of somebody at HURLEY.
c) Where does John John fit in all this?
D) This is tough situation, because of all the surf industry companies, it is my perception that HURLEY, and I mean Bob Hurley, has the most compassion, is one of the boys if you will. It would be problematic for him to let someone go. But… it’s a business.
E) If they keep everyone they have one hell of a surf team: Ace Buchan, Rob Machado, Brett Simpson, Carissa Moore, Julian Wilson, Kolohe Andino, Evan Geislman, Tim Curran, Mitch Crews, Yadin Nichols, Conner Coffin, Nat Young, Aamion Goodwin, Coco Nogales, Evan Valiere, Rizal, Laura Enever, Koa Smith, Michel Bourez, Mickey Detemple.
#4 Defending ASP world champ Kelly Slater has been called to testify in a Southern California courtroom over a trademark dispute between his clothing brand, VSTR, and New York-based apparel maker World Marketing.
At issue is whether Slater’s VSTR — which stands for Visiting, Surfing, Traveling, Responsibility — violates a trademark that World Marketing has held on its Visitor apparel line since 1998.
Under the Quiksilver umbrella, Slater launched VSTR in January. In March, World Marketing sent Quiksilver a cease-and-desist letter, to which the apparel giant responded in court, claiming no infringement. The complaint explains that VSTR is pronounced by saying each letter separately, rather than saying “visitor.”
However, during the brand’s rollout earlier this year, VSTR was widely reported as an acronym, pronounced “visitor.” Earlier this week, a representative who picked up the phone at the brand’s customer service number listed at its website also referred to the brand as “visitor.”
World Marketing has countersued, and on November 14 served the 11-time world champ a subpoena. Slater reportedly responded by saying he’s not available to testify at the moment, as he’s too busy “preparing full-time” for the last stop on the ASP’s 2012 Championship Tour. Yet again, Slater’s a contender for the title, breathing down the neck of tour frontrunner Joel Parkinson.
“I can’t really talk about the case,” World Marketing VP Neil Mossberg told a New York paper earlier this month. “I will say this: I know we are not as famous as Kelly Slater, and I know our stock is not traded like Quiksilver’s. I also know we will not be wiped out without a fight.”
“We have no comment on this,” Fresh and Clean Media’s Shelby Meade, who heads up Slater’s publicity team, told ESPN.com. The Billabong Pipe Masters, held on Hawaii’s North Shore, marks the tenth and final event of this season’s ASP World Tour. The window opens December 8.
TALKING POINTS – DISCUSS
a) Does World Marketing group have a valid legal position here?
b) Do you see this having any effect on Kelly Slater as he prepares for Pipeline Masters?

#2 Olympic snowboard champion Shaun White apologized Tuesday for “unwise choices,” saying he got “carried away” after police accused him of pulling a hotel fire alarm that forced guests to evacuate.
White was charged with public intoxication and vandalism and is due in court Oct. 10.
The 26-year-old snowboard star said on his Facebook page he wants to apologize for “any inconvenience it caused my family, friends, business partners, the hotel and their guests. He added that he was “celebrating a happy occasion with a ton of family and friends and got carried away. I’m truly sorry for my poor behavior.”
Police responded to the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel at 2 a.m. Sunday. A drunken man identified as White pulled the fire alarm, forcing an evacuation, police added. An employee also reported seeing White destroy a hotel phone.
White was given the opportunity to sign misdemeanor citations and refused, police said. Baptist Hospital said White was treated there and released Monday before he was arrested and booked by police. A mug shot released by police shows White with a black eye.

AFTER THE TRESTLES TOLL ROAD DEATH: Following the TCA and the City of San Clemente hijinks? Good article here by Fred Swegles.
TCA is code for DEVELOPMENT. Disband the TCA.
From a native Californian: “California’s gasoline tax is more then enough to cover any and all roadway costs, including eliminating toll roads. The problem….. Politicians in the late 70′s, (Thank Jerry Brown) raided the surplus fund and started using it for other Social Programs. Now, as a state we pay more in Gasoline Tax then any other State in the Nation and we have nothing to show for it.” In retrospect, ye olde gas tax for needles program didn’t go so well.

#5 If its good enough for the Pros it should be good enough for the Pros – dateline Oceanside — The (ASP) Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) men’s and womens PLA Pro Championships presented by Gidget saw some of the world’s top competitive longboard talent including three-time ASP World Longboard Champion Colin McPhillips (San Clemente, CA), 34, and reigning two-time ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion Jen Smith (San Diego, CA), 23, take to the water in hopes to claim this year’s regional title.
A longboard contest in Oceanside – quite a concept – they’ve been having them their since the 1960s. The waves are good, the competitors happy, the businesses in Oceanside are happy. The surfers in Oceanside are happy.
Everyone is happy.

#4 SURFER DIES AT ROCKAWAY BEACH – A 36-year-old man surfing off Rockaway Beach in Queens died on Thursday after getting caught in pounding surf churned up by a passing tropical storm, the authorities said.
A Fire Department spokesman said that two firefighters responding to an emergency call pulled the man out of the water.
Emergency medical technicians tried to revive the surfer, but he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His name was not immediately released.
The spokesman said it appeared that the man had been in the water alone when a leg strap that tethered his surfboard to his ankle became tangled, and rough surf pushed him toward a jetty.

#3 Surfing is the only industry monopolized sport in the world according to the Sydney Morning Herald
The ASP World Tour began in 1982 but the income to its athletes is minimal compared to other professional sports, such as tennis and golf, despite the industry being worth $19 billion world wide.
The flow down to surfers has been a slow and modest trickle.
The Big Three of surfing – Quiksilver, Billabong and Rip Curl – own eight of the 10 events on the world tour, together with about half the licences on the World Qualifying Series, the satellite feeder system to the stars.
What is good for the sport isn’t necessarily good for the industry.

SURFING NEWS: Mighty Pipeline, Not Mick Fanning, Parko’s Big Concern

FROM THE BRISBANE TIMES NOV 7
SURFING NEWS: Mighty Pipeline, Not Mick Fanning, Parko’s Big Concern

Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson in the biggest fight of their professional career – against Pipeline.
The hardest working man in surfing, Joel Parkinson, has one pressing concern going into December’s epic Hawaiian showdown for the world championship. And it isn’t Mick Fanning.
Much has been made of the fabled friendship between the two Coolangatta locals, a pair of best mates that will slug it out amid Pipeline’s iconic barrels in an ASP World Tour finale that couldn’t have been better scripted for Australian surfing.
Fanning triumphed in last week’s Rip Curl Pro Search in Portugal to have the rails run on a second title, following his breakthrough in 2007. Parkinson sits second in the rankings, needing to surf the lights out and results to conspire in his favour if his dream of a maiden crown is to become a reality.
It’s not outpointing Fanning that has been consuming the thoughts of “Parko”. Surfing being a sport where the primary adversary is the water under your feet, the 28-year-old will channel his energy into becoming intimately acquainted with the Pipeline break rather than Fanning’s manoeuvres.
“I think half of it’s in my hands and the other half is in Mother Nature’s hands. Your opponent is the last of your worries in many ways,” Parkinson said.
PARKO’S 2009 WCT POINTS IN JEOPARDY

FROM NEW ZEALAND’S STUFF.COM SPORTS SECTION:
“The governing body of world professional surfing is investigating a Surfing New Zealand promotion involving two leading international surfers.
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) told Sunday News it regarded The Corona Surf Trips, held last month at Whangamata and Gisborne and featuring current world title leader Joel Parkinson and former world champ Mark Occhilupo, as an ”exhibition”.
ASP boss Brodie Carr said his organisation was ”investigating further”.
The ASP will want to know why Surfing New Zealand (SNZ) did not seek official approval for the promotion and whether it should have paid a sanction fee.
”The exhibition was not sanctioned by ASP. We are currently reviewing the event and deciding upon actions from there,” Carr told Sunday News in a written statement.
Sanction fees as high as $US50,000 are payable to the ASP when using its contracted athletes for exhibitions or non-World Championship Tour events.
SNZ has paid ASP $US50,000 sanction fees in the past to gain the services of other world-ranked surfing stars such as Hawaiians Andy Irons and Sunny Garcia to compete in exhibitions.
SNZ executive officer Greg Townsend contradicted Carr by saying he had kept the ASP in the loop and the organisation had no problem with the Corona promotion.
”Surfing New Zealand has a range of dealings with the ASP and right now we are planning one international ASP-sanctioned surfing event in New Zealand for 2010,” Townsend said.
”They have not bought this issue up with us in the various discussions we have had since this promotion.
”We enjoy a very positive relationship with the ASP.”
The ASP will only be worried about Parkinson’s participation in the SNZ promotion as Occhilupo is now retired from the pro tour. The ASP rulebook allows for surfers to be stripped of their world championship points if they appear in a non-sanctioned contest or exhibition.
That would be a calamity for Parkinson, who is heading towards the first world title of his already spectacular career. However, it is unlikely the ASP would take such drastic action against a headline star. Investigations are more likely to centre on whether SNZ should have paid a sanction fee.
A possible defence for SNZ will be the claim that Parkinson was merely ”free surfing” with Occhilupo in Whangamata and Gisborne and therefore approval wasn’t required or a sanction fee due.
Unlike the previous Vodafone Surf Sessions at Piha a few years ago, where SNZ did pay a sanction fee, there was no ”judging or competitive” element to the promotion.
However, the strong promotional element of the exhibition, the commercial attachment of Corona and the branding worn by the surfers while in the water, could undermine that argument.
ASP sponsors pay significant sponsorship fees to appear on the competition ”rash-singlets or vests” of its contracted male and female athletes during world tour events.
”If the ASP allows what Surfing New Zealand did to become the norm, the ASP’s top surfers will be doing them willy-nilly all around the world and getting direct payment,” an international surfing observer told Sunday News.
”Very soon, the ASP’s sponsors like LG and others will be quitting sponsorship of world tour events to do the same as the Kiwi promotion because it’s a lot cheaper.”
Strong crowds, driven by significant pre-publicity, attended both exhibitions in Whangamata and Gisborne. The promotion also resulted in ”internal discussions” within Billabong International – sponsor of the two Australians, and one of the ”Big Three” of world surfing along with Rip Curl and Quiksilver.
Billabong’s concern lay with the surfers wearing Corona-branded clothing and caps while in New Zealand. This conflicts with their master contract.
Billabong said it had dealt with the situation, did not wish to comment further and that there was no lingering issue with SNZ.
Meanwhile, the Auckland City Council’s recently formed Events Committee is set to gain a win shortly when it is announced the International Surfing Association’s amateur World Junior Games will be held at Piha in 2010.
The ACC identified the event as an opportunity, sought commercial backing from Sky City and then approached SNZ to commence talks with the ISA.
