The Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection – May 11, 2013 at the Orange County Fairgrounds
The theme is “California Gold” and the Surfing Heritage (SH) is focusing on just that, boards and memorabilia with a California flair from the ’20s through the ’70s. We’ve already coalesced a solid selection of “Gold’ from various sellers and are actively searching for more. We’re anticipating between 50 prime vintage surfboards for the live auction and at least 40 items including surfboards for the silent auction.
Randy Rarick, a member of the Surfing Heritage Auction Advisory Committee, and a great friend of the Surfing Heritage, has lent his auction expertise to the Surfing Heritage and will also serve as the emcee of this gala.
Please put the Surfing Heritage Vintage Surf Auction presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection (May 11, 2013) on your radar!
Two auctions 1) SILENT and 2) MAIN LIVE. There is something for everybody.
You walk in at noon at you start previewing the over 100 surfboards and 75 silent auction items in the auction – unique and rare boards. Many of them from the SHF collection.
This is a NO RESERVE auction; 80% of the boards in the auction have NO RESERVE on them. Meaning of course that the item will sell no matter what.
For example: On the auction block is a Mickey Munoz shaped Positive Force IV HOBIE single fin with the classic Bill Ogden Hobie artwork, sort of spacey, trippy early 70s vibe to the artwork on the HOBIE logo. This board the opening bid is set at $100 — NO RESERVE, this board could sell for $100. SO you don’t have to have deep pockets to be a part of & to enjoy this auction. There will be something for everybody.
A.R. Gurrey Jr. The Surf Riders of Hawaii
on the auction block
exceptionally unique and rare booklet
the Father of Surf Photography
This book is the first publication ever done exclusively about surfing
each one is handmade and hand assembled using photographic prints
these books were created in 1914 by A R Gurrey Jr – a surfer; first ever surf book, magazine, representation of surfing by a surfer — not an outsider;
He understood the nuances of surfing, he understood what it took to be a surfer; he understood the joys and pleasures of the sport
Gurrey opened up one of the first art galleries in Honolulu
He was a member of the Ho’e He’e Nalu surfing club — the locals club;
Significant because he could have joined the Outrigger Canoe Club, which was more or less a haole upscale club; but Gurrey JR was asked by the local surfers, Duke Kahanamoku and his brothers, to join their club – he’e nalu.
He was tight with the Hawaiian local beach boys; he was one of them; and chose to be with them.
the first person to dedicate himself to taking pictures of surfing and the first surfer to take water photos of the surfing
AR Gurrey was married to Carolyn Haskins Gurrey – a famous photographer in her own right from Honolulu
a flood and a fire wrecked the family home in Honolulu and all of his phtoographic negatives were destroyed – making these images ultra rare one of a kind a very sought after by collectors.
The Father of Surf Photography — AR GURREY JR. The Surf Riders of Hawaii
I showed this booklet to Art Brewer, Jeff Hornbaker, Jeff Hall, and other surf photographers at a meeting last month, and they were all absolutely blown away that we have by booklet.
Of course they all knew the AR GURREY Jr story and they all agreed adamantly that he is/was the father of surf photography.
His booklet — the GURREY FAMILY copy — will be on the auction block May 11, in the main live AUCTION!!
There are only six known copies of this booklet in existence today.
Last year one of these booklets sold at Sotheby’s auction house for $37K.
We are auctioning off the ultra rare FAMILY COPY - from the Gurrey family — of The Surf Riders of Hawaii
Other items on the auction block:
Tom Carroll’s personal rider Pat Rawson 8′ 3″ gun – this is the board he rode to victory in the Hard Rock World Cup at Sunset Beach — this is the winning board!
Two of Tom Curren’s personal riders a six channel single fin from The Search shaped by Hamish Graham and a Maurice Cole Hawaiian Gun — Both Tom Curren personal rides.
An incredible Phil Edwards Honolulu #1 with perfect provenance – original owner dear friend of Phil Edwards and Endless Summer marketing icons R. Paul Allen.

#2 ASP imposes sanctioning rules for club events this year
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 January, 2013 : – - The Gold Coast’s best surfers have been banned from representing their clubs in contests by the sport’s governing body. The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) has imposed strict sanctioning rules which now prohibit the likes of Joel Parkinson and Mick Fanning from competing for their local boardriding clubs.
In a statement issued to the Bulletin, the ASP denied the surfers had been banned but confirmed the rules had changed. “The surfers have not been ‘banned’ from surfing in this event (or any event like it) at all,” it read. “The rule is and has always been no WCT (World Championship Tour) surfer can surf in an non-sanctioned event.
#3 Wanning, Hainan, China — The International Surfing Association China Cup has begun. The 8 participating National Surfing Teams, along with their 48 surfers, traveled from every corner of the globe to compete in tropical Wanning, on Hainan Island in the South China Sea, for the second annual event.

#5 BIG WAVE SURFER MIKE PARSONS BROKE HIS BACK AT OB LAST WEEK DURING EPIC SWELL
from SURFLINE.COM:
Former pro, XXL winner and big-wave charger Mike Parsons suffered a near fatal freefall on a triple overhead wave in San Francisco on Sunday.
After seeing the forecast for more long-period NW swell and offshore winds all weekend, Snips drove up on Saturday with Taylor Knox and Garth Tarlow. They were the first to paddle out in the middle of the beach at 7:00am on Sunday. “It was amazing out there, I was having the best time; everyone was getting waves,” Snips said. “I was having a blast. About four hours into the session, I was looking for one in, and a nice set was coming. I paddled for the third wave, thinking I’d get in a little early with a chip shot out the back.”
Turned out to be not the case. “I thought I was into it, then suddenly realized I wasn’t. I took two more strokes and tried to stand up in what turned out to be the lip. I freefell, and remember my feet hitting my board for a second, then my head hit the water really hard.”
Hard enough to get serious whiplash and crack the C7 vertebrae in his neck. “I thought I was paralyzed under water,” he said. “I had that crazy tingly feeling. My right arm worked a little bit, but it felt like it was dangling; like it had been ripped off my body ’cause I had no feeling.”
Luckily, Snips was wearing flotation. He finally surfaced and tried getting on his board, which wasn’t working. He saw a surfer paddling out and started screaming. “I was so lucky,” Snips said. “He paddled right over to me, ditched his own board, and helped get me to shore. He really saved me, ’cause I couldn’t swim on my own — the whiplash had made my body numb. (Thanks, Charlie Vaughn! Beers on me.)”
“I don’t know if I would’ve surfaced without the floatation, ’cause I couldn’t move,” he said. “I learned for sure — the waves were solid 10 to 12 feet, and when you’re in beachbreak that big and go unconscious, nothing can really help you. It’s almost funny wearing flotation at a beachbreak, but it’s a no-brainer for me. I could paddle and duckdive fine.”
Parsons will spend the next six weeks in a neck brace, but he’s expected to make a full recovery.

US Open – big day of action today — final day … Dane v Kelly
EMAIL: — A FAN’S PERSPECTIVE: They’ve made it okay again; this fog will last a few more years, and there will be a back lash; lipstick on a pig can only last so long before the masses realize they’ve been kissing a pig and not Marilyn Monroe.
The puppeteers are doing what they do best, selling the surfing lifestyle as a day-time RAVE for 17-year-olds, “let’s get drunk, smoke cloves and listen to music…, oh shit, here come the cops”;
SURFING DOES NOT COME FIRST, if it did, they’d run the US Open at a really good surf spot. In the long run, this event hurts competitive surfing. It doesn’t hurt the selling of surfing, but it hurts true competitive surfing.
THE US OPEN of Golf is not held at Oceanside Municipal Golf Course. Maybe it should be? Plenty of parking and a main street, plus, you can get an alcohol permit. Huntington Beach (if you strip away the history, the pier setting, and the Main Street) is just a run-of-the-mill California beach break. Sure it gets good. Really good. In October. In January. If the surfing competition was priority number one, it would be held somewhere else. Somewhere worthy of the nations Open Championship.
Que a smattering of well-played excuses in 3, 2, 1… “can’t do it a Lowers; what about parking for 200K; the city really benefits from the revenue; where else can you get an “arena”; we’ve been having this contest here forever; the industry loves it here; yada, yada, yada.”
All valid points. It’s easy to rationalize. However, just because “we’ve had a surfing competition here forever,” does not make it okay. It makes us stupid. Insane. Bottom line: surfing competition does not come first at the US Open of Surfing.
That’s okay. Let them kiss pork. Call me when Kelly’s wave pool is perfected. They can have the US Open of Surfing at Coachella.
Now the final day matchups are very impressive. I must say I’m looking forward to the final day action. After all, I am a fan…

SHOW NOTES:
EMAILs/ TWEEETS / SHOUT OUTS:
Email #1: Hey Bassy and Baldy,
Like both of you guys I’m a fan of the WCT, it’s surfers and the webcasts, and like both of you I was both enthralled and disappointed by what went down at the Fiji Pro on June 8. Enthralled because regardless of who was in the water, we got to see some epic hollow big wave surfing go down. And disappointed because we didn’t get to see high-performance WCT surfing go down in rare waves of consequence. I feel Surfline did a great job at breaking down the situation, but my own thoughts — some not brought up in the article and some in response — are below.
1. While the best surfers for those conditions were indeed in the water when things lined up (and I was stoked to see them charge), this was a WCT event and if those big wave surfers were skunked because the contest was run, well, c’est la vie. Those days were blacked out for that event well in advance and those chargers were aware of this as they boarded airplanes.
2. The fact that some WCT surfers were unprepared for such a swell is inexcusable; Surfline predicted the swell well in advance (hell, I was giddy about watching such a swell hit) and so it wasn’t like it wasn’t in the mainstream. They needed to be ready in case it paid off like expected. They’re professionals, it’s their job to be prepared for all conditions. Shaun White doesn’t show up with his powder board when he’s going to be competing in the Superpipe. Or if it’s fogged out, slope style competitors bring appropriate goggles. Can you imagine Kobe Bryant not competing because he brought the wrong shoes? Please. If you don’t have the right board, whatever the conditions, then you perform accordingly. Simple.
3. The great thing about the WCT tour is that the different breaks bring out different strengths and weaknesses in different surfers; advantages and disadvantages are implicit in such a format. This is obvious. The tour tends to be skewed to fairness because of this; things balance out. The PGA Tour is interesting because of this. It’s the same idea. If you’re well-rounded, you’ll probably succeed.
4. If there was ever going to be a time when “inexperienced” WCT surfers were going to compete in those conditions, this was it. It was indeed paddleable and there was arguably some of the most experienced water patrol to minimize the risk and “pick up the pieces” when necessary. If there was ever a time to go and and push the sport forward, June 8 was the day. There might be another opportunity such as this, but with waiting periods being as constricted as they are, and the lack of spots on the tour that have such consequential “magical” days are few. Sure, there will be special swells for trestles, super tubes, bells etc., but they’ll never have the teeth of a break like Cloudbreak.
5). This is the main stage for pro surfing. These are the kind of conditions where names are made. Think about Jeremy Flores last year in Tahiti. Here’s a kid, who only a couple of years earlier opted not to charge the big stuff when presented the opportunity (the infamous vote to wait or not for an incoming swell) in competition and has now been invited to the Eddie based on his performance. The ASP missed an opportunity to further its lesser-known and younger surfers — the brands future — beyond Kelly Slater. A potential gutsy, surprise performance from somebody unexpected was squandered. Somebody was robbed of the opportunity to make a name for themselves. Imagine an XXL nominee in a WCT jersey? Competition is how these athletes at that level push each other. Those who have it in them to step up, will. Those who don’t, won’t. Simple. Competitive, live sports are compelling because of the drama they create; we truly don’t know what’s going to happen. That’s exciting. It’s not scripted. Think Michael Jordan. Think Willis Reed. Think Kirk Gibson. All big performances on the biggest stage. All legendary.
Look, it was great to see all those waves ridden by guys who do that for a living. As a surf fan, and now a quadriplegic who doesn’t surf much, I was in heaven. But this was a WCT event, and this kind of high-level competition can’t be duplicated during a free surf. Yeah, guys push each other with each wave ridden no matter what, but it’s different — it’s friendlier. Look at the emotion generated between Adriano and CJ; that was only because winning and losing were on the line i.e. ratings points, money, personal accolades, a career.
So as exciting as it was to watch some of the best big wave surfers do what they do in conditions they’re familiar with, it would have been far more riveting and dramatic to see WCTers make competitive surfing history, and quite possibly witness an unexpected legendary performance. Extraordinary circumstances have a way of bringing out the extraordinary in humans.
Oh, what could have been.
Great show guys! Peace and aloha.

SURFING should consider a separate big-wave tour, says 11-time world champion Kelly Slater.
Slater was responding to questions from The Australian regarding the decision to halt the Volcom Fiji Pro in what turned out to be enormous, perfect waves at Cloudbreak.
When that event was called off, it allowed up to 30 big-wave specialists, who had flown in especially for the occasion, to put on their own show. The session was broadcast live on Volcom’s webcast and its TV affiliates.
Asked if the decision not to run the event had diminished the sport’s marketability, Slater said: “It actually brings up a more interesting question about the Association of Surfing Professionals backing a big-wave world tour or events in a specialty way as they happen.
“These (big-wave) guys and these swells need a good platform that supports what they’re already doing and someone to really document the whole lifestyle and help these guys out more.”
The most influential people in Sport
As reported in The Australian last week, the decision to abandon the contest came down to a split vote, with head judge Richie Porta voting for the event to proceed and contest director Matt Wilson and a representative of the surfers calling for a postponement.
There has been some speculation in online forums about exactly who was the surfer who voted with Wilson to stop the contest. However, Taj Burrow, who would have been in the first heat if the event had continued, said the surfers’ vote had been the result of a kind of consensus.
Burrow said he was consulted, as were a handful of other surfers in the ensuing heats. “I was scared,” Burrow said with a wry laugh.
“I’m pretty sure the surfers felt like we just didn’t have big enough boards. It was just this really weird, unorganised moment. In the meantime, the big-wave guys were out there going nuts and a lot of us felt we’d just watch them.”
The incident also raises the issue of the role of the contest director, and whose interests he represents. In an email to The Australian, Wilson, who normally works for the ASP as a regional director, said he was still being employed by the ASP at the time of the announcement to call off the contest.
But ASP tour manager Renato Hickel said: “For that event, Matt was the contest director through Volcom. Once the event accepts, he’s working for the event.”
The distinction is important. Volcom was in a win-win situation at the time. Call the event on, and the world’s most famous surfers will throw themselves at huge waves, live on Volcom’s broadcast. Call the event off, and it still gets to broadcast the unsanctioned big-wave session anyway, regardless of the opportunity lost for the ASP.
Slater said the ASP should have one contest director for the entire season, whose allegiance is to the ASP.
“We should have a single contest director for all events hired by ASP who works closely with the people who know each spot best,” he said. “We have seen cases where contest directors can run based on conditions that suit their friends/sponsored riders best. It’s human nature. We need someone at arm’s length.”
Slater added, however, he wasn’t criticising Wilson. “I don’t think he did a bad job.”

#2 Parko to Paddle Molokai. From JoelParko.com
How long has the idea of doing the Molokai race been floating around in your head?
It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long while now, but I never thought I’d ever get the chance. It’s always been on the bucket list but I never thought it’d come together until I’d finished with the tour.
How much of the race’s vibe have you soaked up over the years?
I’m always watching it every year. We’re generally in J-Bay when it’s on and I’m always checking it out. I guess Jamie (Mitchell, 10-time winner) is the king of it and being a Gold Coast surfer I’ve always been interested in the race and how he went. It’s been in the back of my mind to give it a go one year and experience it.
Are you doing it solo or as a team?
I’m doing it as a team with Wes (Berg). He’s one of the best board paddlers in the world and a guy I’ve trained with for years now, so he’s a pretty handy guy to do the race with.
How do you think you’ll go?
[Laughing] I’ll just be happy to finish. I’m there for the experience, not the win. It’s about being in the ocean, that’s why I’m doing it.
And you’re hearing the Kelly might be doing it as well?
Yeah… [laughing] maybe he doesn’t want Jamie to get to 11 Molokai wins! Nah, I reckon he’ll be doing it for pretty much the same reasons I’m doing it. I reckon he’s probably been thinking about doing it for a while too. It’ll be good having him in the race

REEF CHECK – Greg Hodgson Reef Check Foundation is an international non-profit organization dedicated to conservation of two ecosystems: tropical coral reefs and California rocky reefs.
How long has it been going on?
How do you make it sexy, in other words, the people that dive on reefs get it, surfers get it, how do you reach the kid in Oklahoma or the president of an ad agency or the chamber of commerce in Bali?
We have Surfrider Foundation, Save The Waves, Heal the Bay, Surfers Against Sewage, Greenpeace, Green Surf, Oceana, Surfers For Cetaceans, the list goes on and on… are there too many causes?
Robert McClatchy the Reluctant Capitalist, BoD ? Huh?
Reef Check carries out its work through three major programs:
1) EcoDiver Program – an education and certification program for kids to adults who want to learn more about the ocean and take part in protecting reef ecosystems.
2) Coral Reef Management Program – a coral reef monitoring and management system that focuses on establishing Marine Protected Areas to conserve coral reefs while encouraging sustainable use of surrounding reefs by local residents.
3) Reef Check California – a volunteer monitoring program for California rocky reefs designed to provide data for managers and to build a conservation constituency among California divers.
Year of the REEF singing contest: REEF IDOL
We are the earth, the earth is us
our planet’s future is in our trust
The mountains, the sky, the ocean blue
This beauty entrusted to me and you
Fishes and coral that live in the sea
Help sustain the lives of you and me
They’re fragile we all need to understand
Their future’s the future of woman and man
CHORUS: The year of the reef is every year.
Reefs sustain the life we hold so dear
The beauty of the reef everyone should see
The future of reefs depends…………..on you and me.
Great White Sharks: Are there too many? How do we know? Children’s Pool in La Jolla?
Segment 3: Brought to you by THE BOARDROOM INTERNATIONAL SURF BOARD SHOW Oct 6 & 7 2012 DM fairgrounds honoring 4X World Champion MR
TOP 5 Stories :
1) The winning bid for 11-time World Champion surfer Kelly Slater’s surfboard was a whopping $4,000, which was matched as promised by another $4,000 from the champions own pocket for an $8,000 donation going to the ROLE Foundation, a Bali-based environmental organization that is actively engaged in the fight to clean up Bali.
ROLE’s founder and CEO Michael O’Leary was extremely gratified when he heard the news, saying, “I would like to thank Kelly Slater from the bottom of my heart for raising these much needed funds. This $8,000 will go toward managing our seven projects that include education programs such as the Children’s Interactive Environmental Education Tour, which is directed at bringing our environmental message to the families and the communities of Bali through the kids, and on to the Solid and Liquid Waste Infrastructure Construction Project at Uluwatu.”
“Kelly also has brought a great measure of global awareness to Bali’s dire pollution problems, and hopefully this awareness will help gain further commitments towards attaining a healthy island and coastal environmental eco-systems for Bali’s land, waterways, reefs and seas. Cheers to the Champ, Kelly Slater, and to Quiksilver for helping the Role Foundation, ‘Fight the Good Fight’, here in Bali,” added O’Leary.
2) Can will and should Occy re-qualify SURFERMAG.com: http://www.surfermag.com/features/occy%E2%80%99s-third-wind/
“What Occy can do, however, is destroy a meaty face on his backside more efficiently than anyone else in the world. This was true 10 years ago, and its still true today.”– SURFERmag.com
That’s not true. Is IT?? Who has a more efficient and meaty backside hack than OCCY?
OCCY: “I mean it might be due to the equipment, which has gotten a lot better—thinner, faster, better boards. But, I probably am surfing the best I ever have,” says Occy. “It’s hard to tell but it kind of feels like it. I would probably have to look at footage, but it feels like it. Especially at Margaret’s and at home on the Gold Coast when it’s early in the morning and nobody’s watching. But who’s going to believe it because nobody’s watching!”
3) explore.org LAUNCHES REEL LIFE with MIKE PRICKETT: A Web Video Series & Community Blog Documenting the Incredible Work & Uncertain Road for Acclaimed Underwater Cinematographer Partially Paralyzed in Diving Accident
On March 14, 2012, while filming underwater on location off the coast of an atoll in French Polynesia, Mike saw a diver below him in distress. Acting instinctively, Mike helped the diver make an emergency ascent but in the process was partially paralyzed from a severe case of the bends. While the man he saved was ultimately able to walk away from the incident, Mike was told he may never walk again. His doctors say it will take six months to find out how well he will recover.
explore.org, the philanthropic media organization and multi-media arm of the Annenberg Foundation, has launched a special web video series, photo gallery and community web site today that chronicles the extraordinary life, work, and current struggle with paraplegia of world renowned ocean cinematographer, Mike Prickett (Hawaii).
4) Volcom Fiji Pro – event starts June 3 - Solspot.com Forecast looks like June 2nd a solid 6-8 swell hits – dropping slightly of the first day of the waiting period, but plenty of waves…
5) For what it is worth… Hearing thru the grapevine that Kelly Slater is the newest addition to the GoPRO team.

Surf Report with Adam Wright from SolSpot.com – all eyes on Southern Hemi swell developing now — the HYPE officially begins now – that should produce some very solid Central American surf sizes. So NicaraguaSurfReports.com or Costa Rica or wherever your heart desires to take you, warm water, head high ++ swell on the way for the end of the month. Should produce some shoulder to head high waves in San Diego and a little bigger in the Trestles area.
When is our water going to warm up?

Email 2: You guys were kind of on a professional surfer / contest binge so it was great to hear about other aspects of our culture. Doug Walker’s “Lost and Found” story has so many fascinating dimensions to it. You guys did an amazing job guiding us through.
This year is the second that the WSA is including a Challenged Athlete division in every one of their contests, including the West Coast Championships at Lower Trestles.
Email #3: Hey, you guys covered the year anniversary of the Fukushima meltdown but didn’t segway into the San O closure.

NEED YOUR HELP: Wounded Warrior West Swim and Surf Donation Drive — Please if you can donate $10 $20 $30 or $3000 ! I’m trying to get them 10 new softboards up at the Hope and Care Center on Camp Pendleton. These warriors come home – still active duty with prosthetics and the hard surfboards get dinged up; plus the wax get stuck in the prosthetic. So softboards are the answer. Help out if you can please!!!!

I no like. Not so nice. Kazakhstan is furious over the playing of the spoof national anthem from the comedy Borat during a real-life international sporting event, calling it “a scandal” and demanded an investigation. Maria Dmitrienko of Kazakhstan won a gold medal at the Arab Shooting Championships in Kuwait on Thursday, but during the award ceremony the spoof anthem from the 2006 movie starring Sacha Baron Cohen was played instead of the real anthem. Tournament organizers are believed to have downloaded the wrong version from the Internet.

Segment 2
Nicaragua Trip – My boards didn’t make it until the final day I was there. I rented boards the whole time.
Accommodations: Super nice accommodations from Nicaragua Surf Report .com. I stayed in a 1 bedroom deluxe condo with all the amenities for $115/night. Included bikes with surf racks, pool, internet ($5/day). Cook my own food. I spent $70 on food for the week. I watched movies, and I did some work too.
Waves: The swell never really materialized. I got there and it was 2-3′; then it dropped, then the swell did arrive for one day but it wasn’t big enough to dampen the crowd. A little wally, there were corners, and the wind was quartering from the southeast too much. And the wind was STRONG, MUY FUERTE… Which caused upwelling so the water dipped to 65 degrees. Swell died in one day. Surf wise… I didn’t time it right.
Punta Colorados – Steep hollow fast beach break with corners. Better when it’s big cause it thins out the crowd. Kooky crowd.
Panga Drops – Tricky reef spot that has rippable cutback sections. Rights and lefts.
Other – This local guy took me to a spot with a rivermouth and a left point. That was fun. My best session, no crowds, way more adventureous.
Golf course is great. Super nice 18 holes.

#1 Mike Prickett – friend of everybody and award winning water cinematographer – suffers paralysis after saving the life of another diver.
FROM ESPN: Cinematographer Mike Prickett still sits in a hyperbaric chamber, suffering from a paralyzing case of decompression sickness. But after spending more than six hours a day in “the pot,” as Indies Trader captain Martin Daly refers to it on Prickett’s Facebook wall, things seem to be improving.
“He has regained some sensation and minor movement in his legs. Definitely not in his feet yet, but he’s got the spirit of a giant, so if anyone’s going to recover from this, you can bet Mike will,” reports Jodi Wilmott, who released the first official statement about Prickett on Mar. 20 and has been in contact with him since.
Coming to the aid of a diver in distress while on a commercial shoot in Tahiti, in an act that can only be described as utterly and purely heroic, Prickett dove 220 feet down to retrieve the diver, and then gave him the remains of his air supply as they made their way back to the surface. He subsequently got “the bends” and was paralyzed from the chest down.
News about Prickett spread like wildfire throughout the various social media channels, and the outpouring of support has been enormous. At one time or another it’s safe to say that every notable in professional surfing has passed before his well trained lens. Among a multitude of other projects, Prickett was the director of photography for the Emmy-nominated 2007 ESPN release “Down the Barrel.”
“We have a benefit at Surfer, The Bar next Wednesday, Mar. 28, 6:00pm to late,” added Wilmott. “Live music, auction, a good North Shore get-together for the surf community to hopefully help cover some of Mike’s medical expenses.”
For more you can find Surfer, The Bar on Facebook or go to PrickettFilms.com.
#2 SURFERS Heroes in Florida shark attack
Letter to the Editor – paraphrased: “My daughter was tugged twice off of her board by the shark, these two men surfing nearby immediately came to our aid — performing the true act of heroism.
Being in water over our heads with a clearly agitated animal, we could not simply run to the shore. These surf angels put their own comfort and well-being aside and paddled straight out to flank us with their boards, creating a flotilla of four. They spoke with calm reassurance and assisted my injured daughter from my surfboard onto hers for the paddle back to shore.
Yes, it was horrifying. But God must have been working in the hearts of the two men who shielded us from further harm, leaving our daughter with a lasting positive vision of their calm faces, words of constant encouragement, swift purposeful actions, and absolutely no contempt for the shark behaving normally in its environment.
The wonderful sport of surfing carries its risks, rewards, and some amazing heroes. We thank our heroes.”
#3 Paige Hareb will box on for her surfing career.
The World-Tour surfer and Fight for Life cult hero has confirmed she will follow in Sonny Bill Williams’ footsteps and juggle two sports, with a career on the waves and in the ring to help fund her bid to become the first Kiwi to win the world women’s surfing crown.
Hareb says she would fight professionally at least once this year, most likely on the Fight for Life bill in December. But she is not ruling out more bouts in 2012 and next year. Dean Lonergan and Duco Events wanted her back as a key drawcard after her sensational showing last year – when she went toe-to-toe with snowboarding champ and TV star Hayley Holt.
“I need to find other ways to fund my travel around the world, for the Dream Tour, and this is a way for me to do it,” says Hareb, who last year lost her sponsor Billabong. “Dean’s obviously keen to have me back and if I can help get some more funds and exposure, I’ll do it.”
Who pro surfers would you like to see in the boxing ring? How about Kelly Slater vs. Jamie O’Brien. They’ve been having a twitter war. Jamie O’Brien vs anybody.
#3 The Groundswell Society’s “Sharing the Stoke” event makes a return to Rincon Point –yesterday . This event supports at-risk youth programs and scholarships. Using a team surfing format developed especially for the Invitational, each team has the opportunity to ride the waves of Rincon for an hour with no other teams in the water. From surf schools, surfing organizations, clubs, companies, and surf shops throughout California teams are invited based on their public benefit efforts to “share the stoke of surfing” during the prior year.
#4 The Del Mar Surfboard Expo (formerly known as Sacred Craft) has a date Oct 6 & 7.
#5 GMAC CAMP CHIMES in on SURFERS VILLAGE claiming 90 footer.:
While I believe that the surfing community has ‘down-sized’ wave heights for far too long ( I also believe this wave to be bigger than 90 feet), I find it curious that their “camp” would spin this a few weeks away from the XXL voting. It se……ems a little desperate. If I was advising the GMAC ‘camp’ I’d stress confidence in their 90-foot claim, rather than seeking validation, a validation they already have assuming they can produce Mr Collins’ email.
For the record we called and texted Garrett to come on the show months ago. He is one of the best radio guests I’ve ever had the pleasure of interviewing. I hope to get him on soon.
Some of you may recall the Stab and Dodge video I made years ago.
Well, it seems that I may have actually provided to our culture in a meaningful way. Check this out:
