GMAC’s World Record Proclamation w/ XXL Director Bill Sharp
GMAC’S wave could be 90 feet. It could be 100 feet. I hope it measures 99 feet. I don’t care. I’m not questioning the size. What I’m questioning is the process.
Which organization or authority validates such a claim? Is it the Guinness people? Or XXL? YouTube? Is it George Downing or George Will? Perhaps Jane Kachmer?
This week we talk with Bill Sharp, Director of Billabong’s XXL Global Big Waves Awards Director. There’s been much internet chatter about Garrett McNamara’s huge wave and self-proclaimed world record.
Here are some other “Worlds Biggest Wave” – there’s more than one! Who knew?

SURFING NEWS: Teahupoo Torrent; No Surf Contests at Swamis; Seth Pettersen In-studio;

Promoter Linda Benson backed away from having a surf contest at Swamis. We say “thank you” Linda. A contest at Swamis beach Park? Folks if you haven’t been there, let me tell you, it is a tiny beach park with very thin sliver of beach, limited parking, no handicap access, the list of logistical nightmares is never-ending. Common sense prevailed, hard to believe when you consider politicians were involved.
Anyway, it is over, so you probably won’t hear Baldy and I talking about it.Thanks for putting up with us as the issue unfolded. I do know that stake-holders in this debacle did listen to the show, and I’m sure that it helped to ‘pressure them into clarity’ on this issue.
Waves: the last few days have been really good here in San Diego. A mix of southern hemi groundswell ( first of the season – same swell that hit Teahupoo; check TransWorld SURF) and NW groundswelll has provided us with plenty of fun waves. This weekend promises more of hte same, and going into mid-to-late portion of next week (Mar 25th-ish) more significant souther hemi and NW swell combines.

By the way, in case you haven’t been following PT on FaceBook, NOOSA has been firing as the entire Queensland coast is inundated with cyclonic swell activity.
Seth Pettersen, a local Ventura surfer and musician, has been playing some gigs down here in San Diego. Seth will join Baldy and Bassy in-studio Sunday Mar 21st, to play some live music and talk story. We are big fans, and play Seth’s tunes coming in and out of breaks. you may have that song Baby Buddha stuck in your head. That’s Seth!

Seth will be playing at Sacred Craft in Ventura April 10th, Ventura County Fairgrounds

First off, you can get the PODCAST here. Listen while you work!
Wow great show. Scott noted how nice it is to have Mirmar Naval Air Station and Camp Pendleton –old school coastal California vegetation. Sean Mattison called infrom Ecuador to tell us the USA surf team is still in contention for the medals at Quiksilver ISA Wrld Juniors. We learned it was Scott’s Birthday. Kevin from Santa Cruz emails to say No to Nause.
Scott reports that Between The Lines is playing April 18th Saturday night in Oceanside to bneefit the California Surf Museum. Surfline Mobile surf report says might have some wavesin late half of week.
Led Zepplin’s Song Remains The Same is the best song ever- at least for this week. Twitter is new thiing but Scott n Marty are a few steps behind technology happenings. Hansens is having a big Spring sale until April 11th, and Marty suggests it would be a good time to get a good deal on a full suit. Marty calls Bass a booty hood helmet guy.
Top 5 stories: 1) Shark at Swami’s clears the lineup last Saturday night. Scott notes that we are coming up on year anniversary of David Martin fatal being attacked at Pillbox in Solana Beach. Marty saw a very large stingray a few days ago. Not really a shark. Shuffle your feet.2) Pablo Paulino breaks his board in the WQS at Margaret River and ‘swipes’ a competitor Kirk Flintoff’s stick. He went on to win the heat. Gnar Gnar. Marty explains about the wave and The Box. Austin Ware gets jobbed in his heat. Scott suggests Pablo is from the slums of Brazil and is used to just ‘taking things’ that are laying around.3) East coast of USA gets late season winter swell from Jersey to Puerto Rico. Scott points out the East coast of Australia is scoring flawless mindless barrels. Lines to the horizon everyday for two weeks onend. Non stop waves. Joel Fitzgerald on Facebook.4) Some dude coughs up an inch long rusty nail. It had been embedded in his nose for 30 years. 4) Bells Beach talk.
Ray Bergman from Fantasy Surfer calls-in;
Pat Rawson calls in and talks about shaping and life.
Charlie from the Inn at Manzanillo Bay calls in to tell us about the epic set up down in Troncones.
