Surfing News: AnnaSophia Robb Plays Bethany
by admin on Feb.06, 2010, under This Weeks Show
Super Bowl Sunday:
Joe from PlusONE surfboards will be on hand to discuss…stuff.. and bring me my new board!
We’ll have Adam Elder, who wrote the San Diego Magazine article on Nate Cintas and localism, on the phone to discuss.
But…first things first…classic HD footage of banker caught surfing the web for nudie shots on LIVE Aussie TV. Check out the “I’m busted” look on his face at the end.

Rising Hollywood star Anna Sophia Robb wore a green sleeve on her arm, which will later be digitally removed for the movie.
Dennis Quad and Carrie Underwood become surfers for the big screen as filming for “Soul Surfer” the Bethany Hamilton story begins in Hawaii this week. Anyone who listens to DTL knows we are big fans of Bethany. She is gnar gnar. I’ve seen her paddle out into the most hideous Sunset Beach 12′-15′ with 15 knot onshore winds, closing out the channel crap / hell surf…with one arm! She is friggin’ nause.
AnnaSophia Robb plays Bethany.

This event highlights the need for SUP safety. Great idea and it makes sense that it came from Mickey!

Can you name these three surfer/shapers?
More legendary surf craftsman….Rich Harbour
from a press release at Surfline: “A Life in Surfboard Culture is an exhibition of Rich Harbour’s life work, 50 years of surfboard shaping and surf shop operation that spans the modern era of surfing’s history. Opening February 13 and running until April 9 at the Frank M. Doyle Art Pavilion on the Orange Coast College campus in Costa Mesa, the exhibition will be one of the most ambitious presentations of surf culture ever mounted, featuring more than 40 significant surfboards and a myriad of vintage images and objects including rare photographs, vintage clothing and many of Harbour’s original shaping tools.

An opening reception Saturday February 13 from 5 to 9pm is open to the pubic offering food, refreshments and entertainment. Not only a celebration of surf shop culture, it will be a tribute to Rich Harbour – one of California’s seminal surf industry figures – and his contribution to the lifestyle.
“I consider Rich Harbour a master sculptor and engineer,” says Andrea Harris-McGee, Director of the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion. “The exhibition will present a behind-the-scenes look into the shaping process,” says Harris-McGee. “Orange Coast College has an enrollment of more than 24,000 students most of whom live near the coast and many of whom are involved in surfing, or some other form of ocean activity. So this is an art, history and culture that have a specific, local meaning to the students and to the residents of Orange County.”"

Carlsbad, CA- February 2, 2010 – TransWorld Media and The Sacred Craft Consumer Surf Expo are pleased to announce TransWorld SURF and TransWorld Business as the media sponsors for the 2010 Sacred Craft Expos. Surfing Industry, Surf News: An All-star Lineup of Shapers, Craftsman, Designers & Manufacturers
by admin on Sep.21, 2009, under This Weeks Show, Uncategorized

An all-star lineup of shapers, craftsman, designers & manufacturers of the surfing industry will take over San Diego for the third annual Del Mar Sacred Craft Surf Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, October 10th and 11th.
The stellar list includes, but is not limited to, Bing Copeland, Peter St. Pierre, Mark Richards, John Cherry, Rusty Preisendorfer, Brian Hilbers, Matt Calvani, Reno Abellira, Pat Rawson, Joe Baguess, Firewire, John Kies, Gary Linden, Daniel Thompson, SurfTech, Robert August, Gary Hanel, Axxe Wetsuits, Tim Bessell, Stu Kenson, Quiksilver, Dennis Murphy, Bruce Jones, and Ricky Carroll. Of course this years’ Tribute to the Masters Shape-off honoree, Dick Brewer (who will be celebrating his 73rd birthday) will also be in attendance.
The complete list of over 100 shapers and exhibitors is listed on the website at http://www.sacredcraftexpo.com/exhibitors.html.
Sacred Craft Surf Expo 2009 has something for everyone from board demo’s to seminars to artwork to music. One of this years’ main attraction is the Vintage Surfboard Antique Road Show event, taking place on Saturday October 10th from 10am – 1pm.
“We are urging surfers to dig through their garages, their storage space, and their backyards for collectable surfboards and magazines that they think may hold some real value,” explained expo director Scott Bass. “Anything special and unique from say, 1985 or so and earlier, especially if it is in good shape, probably has value above and beyond normal used-board pricing. Our expert appraisers can determine a estimated value.”
Special events are being planned around and during the Sacred Craft Expo weekend. First off, make sure to get down to 15th St. for the TransWorld SURF Sacred Craft Magical Morning Board Demo, just down the street from the expo. The general surfing public is invited to 15th St. reef in Del Mar on Saturday October 10th from 7am – 10am. Come on down and try out boards and wetsuits from Sacred Craft exhibitors.
The Sacred Craft Surf Expo opens its doors immediately following the TransWorld SURF Sacred Craft Magical Morning Board Demo.
You will want to be at the expo early! The first 100 attendees in the door will be put in a special “early bird” drawing for a brand new Firewire fish surfboard. Great odds! And no wonder, just a few doors down from the DM racetrack!
Musicians will play on the outdoors stage all weekend long. Various groups are scheduled including Australian longboard champion Beau Young, Miles Kinney & Tower 7, a YardBirds cover band; the acoustic stylings of Kevin White; and Future Fins brand ambassador Phil ‘Boo’ Stubbs.
On Saturday Oct 10, make sure to stay around and check out a special SACRED CRAFT premier screening of the new Australian documentary film “SEARCHING FOR MICHAEL PETERSON”.
A special invite-only VIP birthday reception for Tribute to the Masters Shape-off honoree Dick Brewer is being planned for October 3rd at Wade Koniakowsky’s Ocean Art Gallery. More information to be revealed as it becomes available.
In addition to all of this, Sacred Craft seminars run all weekend long at the Sacred Craft Surf Expo. On the docket are Drew Brophy’s inspirational slide show and spray paint demonstration; an epoxy laminating demonstration by Dave Daum; UCSD’s Stephanie Moyerman discusses feminine physique and surfboard design for women; Lee Vanderhurst professes on surfboard design 101 during “The Idiot’s Guide to Surfboard Design”. A Multi-media and hands-on guide to the basics in surfboard design from outline to rocker, how to measure it and what it does. Know how your surfboard should work before you catch your first wave; UCSD’s Benjamin Thomson talks about natural frequency (recoil rate) of a surfboard and why it is important to you!; Whitney Guild will present Turn Up The Volume! and discuss the importance of knowing the volume of each of the surfboards in your quiver. VOLUME is rarely discussed, but is an important single number that can be used to describe each of your boards; and the Groundswell Society discusses apex predators and their role in surfboard design. A complete schedule will be available shortly.
Media outlets scheduled to attend include The Surfers Journal, TransWorld SURF, TransWorld BUSINESS, SLIDE Magazine, FUEL TV, & MyLocalLineupTV Channel 16.
